Ok guys, I have to share this with you as I'm so excited. I've finally ordered, from Tokyo, a brand new Dynavector DV 507-II pickup arm. This fantastic arm has always been an object of lust for me, ever since I installed and setup an original DV-501 for a friend back in 1978 or so, on a three-arm Micro Seiki turntable. That gives you an idea of how long this basic design has been in production. I promised myself that one day I would own one, and so I've taken the plunge.

It's a fantastic arm, quite unlike anything else made. It has two separate planes of axis with eddy current damping for the main vertical axis and dynamic damping for the sub-arm horizontal axis, and looks amazing.

Dave C has been tasked with making me an arm plate for the SL-1210. There will be a Jelco SA-250ST + plate on sale soon ;)

Look out for installation photos and a review when I receive the items.

Lucky man!
I've often wondered how one of these would fair on that TT (no good on my Gyro - too heavy!)
It's one of those things you'd want to own for it's looks & build. It also happens to sound great too!

WOW - awesome, Martin! :respect:

Are you sure it'll fit though, in terms of the geometry?

Oh dear, I do hope you won't be disappointed... They've had thirty years to get it right and certainly hadn't after ten............... according to Martin Colloms anyway....

All those Dynavectors have the same geometry Pivot to Spindle = 226mm...228mm on Jelco 250ST. Be ok

I've studied the diagrams closely and I'm fairly certain it'll go in ok. This is the difference between the DV 507-II and previous models, they've made it more compatible with standard deck mountings in size and by using a single column mounting.

But not according to every other review I've read (and he reviewed an older model anyway). More importantly, I've heard it enough times to know that it'll do what I want from it.

Not quite: effective length is 241mm compared with Jelco's 228mm. Distance to spindle is 226mm compared with Jelco's 210mm. That's why I need a new arm plate :)

Everyone's boyhood dream on a Tekky. I'm speechless with envy.

When you do take some pics, don't forget to send them to The Sun. With that on page 3 they'd double their circulation . .

I'm really really really looking forward to your writeup and piccies.

 Pivot to spindle is 226mm like i said as all those dynavectors. But i appologise with the Jelco i quoted the Effective length of 228mm rather than the Pivot to spindle 210mm

It looks like the arm from a Cyberdyne Systems T-800 - stripped of flesh, obviously! Enjoy Martin, hope it is all you want it to be.

Hi Martin

Crikey ' i remember seeing and hearing one back in 1986 or 88 at the Penta show ,
well it must be a 1st on the 1200 ' your deck/arm combo will be unique ' .

I look forward to reading about the installation and how it sounds:).

LOL! Yes, I've heard about that and the website called pleaserobme or something similar. I don't do Twitter. Sad!

I'm currently enjoying the Jelco playing Steely Dan's Gaucho (what a superb album) and shedding a tear that it won't be around forever. Great sounding arm for the money.

with great respect dave, but what does MC know;)....after all he was comparing the 505/507 to his linnzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

IME the dynavector totally wipes the floor with ittoks, ekoses and boring arms :ner:

I cant wait to hear /see the results on a 1210:cool:

But seriously, I think I may start a 'dream equipment' thread to see what you lot all lust after seeing as I've exposed my soul :)

Wow! I've lusted after that arm ever since I saw it (the DV505) at a London Hi Fi show in the late '70s. I would want one just for its looks, if only to display it as a piece of sculpture/objetd'art. In fact if I had my way I would display many pickup arms as sculpture - they just look so nice!

Anyway before the men in white coats come for me, I just say that I wonder how the EMT XSD-15 would perform in the DV507?

Also, I would be interested to hear how a Decca performs in one. Having two compliance figures, ideally the Decca would like an arm that has a high effective mass in the vertical plane and lower mass in the horizontal plane; quite the opposite of the Dynavector.

Howard Popeck gave the DV507 a good review as part of a system review in Hi News magazine a couple or so years ago.

I'm amazed. I remember things like that from before. Is this a new/updated model? Is it rude to ask roughly how much dosh?

I hope it works out for you - let us know how you get on.

Might be rude to ask Martin, but a quick Google suggests around £3k.

The arm has arrived! I took a quick look at it yesterday and it looked gorgeous. Unfortunately I've had to pack it all up and ship it to Dave at Sound Hi-Fi so that he can design an arm board for the Techie, to be manufactured in Germany. More waiting...

How long is it likely before it's back from Dave's?

He says two weeks to design the arm board using the CAD software, have the German company CNC it and send it over.

I'm puzzled as to why you have to send the arm! last time i looked Dynavector supplied a very indepth mounting template/spec drawing..

MartinT
12-03-2010, 18:41
With the low platter and low ride height of the Technics SL-1210, there are height and clearance considerations for the Dynavector beyond just cutting its hole in the right place.

I have wondered about this arm, for my SL1200 but have always thought that they looked to heavy. Don't worry about the fitting, if you use an arm plate the full diameter of the 'arm well' you will find a point where you can mark off the centre and still have room for the securing nuts. I am keen to hear what it does for you, they seem to be a bit expensive here in Sydney.

MartinT

I'm surprised, Mike. I always thought Australia had better access to Pacific Rim products on account of your better trade relationships with Asia in general. Also doesn't NZ have an offshoot of Dynavector on its shores?

Mike_New
15-03-2010, 07:45
When I checked the Sydney agent's web site last week they were quoting A$5300
for the arm sans cartridge. What do they cost in the UK? Maybe we can get Dave to try one with the new 11 lb platter we are about to release for the SL1200.

Mike_New

My appologies I got the price wrong, It's $5,900!! or Stg3,540 in you money.

Well, Dave has my arm so if he can try it with the new platter I'm sure he will. The DV507-II typically sells for about £3k here, so it's close to your pricing.

MartinT

Ouch! Audiocubes II lists it for US$4,549 so expensive there too. You could always have a quiet word with the importer as I did.
