i found a german hifi dealer selling a mission mechanic tonearm,it was 1590 euro's! unsurprisingly it had been on sale since feb and had not sold,i made him an offer of 800 euros and got this reply,
Hello,obvious, this is the joke of the week! Sorry, our very low prices are fixed.
to which i replied,
hi,
no it wasn't a joke it was a genuine offer,i have just bought a zeta tonearm for £800 pounds, a very similar tonearm.
you are asking nearly double the price hence why its been for sale for so long.
i assume for the price the mission tonearm comes with its original box and manual etc?
i then got this back,
obvious, you are a "non-expert" for classic hifi prices. Please note that we are worldwide market leader for used hifi since more than 20 years. Of course, it is exactly that included, what is mentioned in the decription.
at that point i phoned him up and asked why he was being rude and patronizing and yes i lost my temper and called him fritz and mentioned the war and the world cup and ending the call by saying 'anyway old chap,must go,toddle pip!

I work with Germans on a daily basis, and I have yet to discuss 1945 or 1966.
It just does not come up in conversation. In fact, I am quite thankful for the beers that their fellow countrymen produce.

True but we do sometimes find it necessary to remind recalcitrant Frenchmen about Trafalgar and Waterloo and they happened over 200 years ago.
The bloke was unnecessarily rude, and a poor salesman. His first response should have been 'Sorry I can't do it that cheap but could come down to £xxx for you.'

There is haggling/bartering and then there is the traditional "low ball" offer that always seems to offend.

Your offer may be correct based on the UK market value, but there is a very lucrative high end HiFi market in Germany.

I’m pretty sure that one of the things that helped us to win the war was the way we remained calm, composed and respectful in the face of adversity...

I was referring to the time in 1967 when we kicked the World Champs asses, they were totally outclassed by Scotland, keepie uppie in the middle of the park , sitting on the ball, in fact most of the Scotland team fell out with Jim Baxter as he was more interested in taking the micky than actually scoring, they could/should have won by 5 or 6 goals but with his antics it was only 3-2 but England were greatly flattered by that result.
Glyn Edwards described the game's most famous incident the following Monday in The Herald: "I shall cherish for a long time the memory of Baxter slowing down the game to almost walking pace, insouciantly juggling the ball with instep, forehead and knees while Stiles, no more than a couple of yards away, bobbed up and down, unsure whether to make his challenge at knee or head level."

Lol, yes I knew what you were referring to. I just couldn't remember if it happened in '66, sometime after the World Cup, or the following year. And yes, that was funny, but I guess England had the last laugh, as we'd still won hee-haw that mattered - and unfortunately little has changed in that respect since! :doh:

I've noticed German dealers selling second hand Sony ES cd players at very high prices, comparatively speaking.
Yes, they do like to 'milk it'... But then, if they've usually got no problem achieving their asking price for vintage gear (as the hi-fi scene in Germany is a different animal to what it is here, as is the case in Italy, Greece, along with the US and Japan), with well-heeled enthusiasts not shy of spending their cash, then why should they charge less?
That said, I can understand what irked Jamie, although he didn't help himself behaving as he did.

Marco, what ARE we allowed to post in this thread? I have had a couple of posts disappear, and I have just watched another one - should have been #50 - vanish before my eyes. And it was a very pertinent one too. There are very probably others too.
The fact is, it is a bit of a non-thread. It isn't really about hi-fi, or even hi-fi prices. In reality, the thread kicked off with an ill-judged anecdote which the OP presumably thought would amuse enough people to make it worthwhile. However, some people found it cringe-worthy, shaming or even offensive. So how are they to respond? Pretend they find it funny? Pretend it is about football? Don't post at all (which rather defeats the object if it being a forum)? Or what? I know you don't like overtly political comment on the forum, Marco, but where the original post is of an overtly political nature (ie. a story about calling a German hi-fi dealer "Fritz" and talking about the war), what's a girl to do?

Jamie. Yes you may be frustrated but theres no point having a go about his prices...The same with any seller....they have priced things the way they do because they have their own thoughts and agenda. Its sometimes dawns on them after a while but often doesnt as they have their own ideas about integrity and pricing. Of course they are going to be defensive as you have mounted a direct challenge. Ok it may be crazy and exhorbitant but you are essentially calling him a rip off merchant.
I have dealt with German dealers for parts and they have offered great prices and a superb service. They even have an english page and reply in english. I shouldnt even have to mention that I know great German people
You will feel good about yourself if you email and offer a full apology. The war was 72 years ago and it doesnt define modern Germany or us now. His German nationality has nothing to do with the issue
We all make mistakes but you should do the right thing now because we dont want any "dont mention the war" stereotypes. It makes us look small minded and time has moved on.
You will feel better about putting it right as I feel you have made a real error there.
