Well I go into the John Lewis ad determined to hate it..... and....... damn them to hell, I really like it again :) Even though it was an Elbow cover version I dug out my Abbey Road disc and put it on.

Ive done too many Christmasses now and generally hate what its become and indeed what it was always about. I hate the christmas card thing and I hate the present giving and general forced fun. I hate that everybody is expected to gather together on the day...Bah humbug..... I think Scrooge was the good guy :D

I try and get something out of the art surrounding the event. For example Im mighty glad Mahalia Jackson sang Silent Night :)

I do find it interesting to be annually labelled a miserable bugger, Scrooge, tight wad or just odd because I have no interest in Christmas. I'm not religious either and it's a religious festival right?

I live by myself, both my parents are gone as are my uncles and aunts and I have no children - my brother lives in India and I see him at funerals these days. I don't buy into materialism or fall prey to marketing or salesmen and am quite content to let it all pass me by and I don't have a TV, which prevents me getting sucked into the whole commercial roundabout, preferring to listen to music, read, go for walks, the movies or socialise with friends. But that apparently makes me a miserable git

Like you, I am not religious (though I would describe myself as a sympathetic Buddhist), and despite my parents giving me a wonderful and 'magical' Christmas experience as a child, these days, as a somewhat cynical adult, I detest and loath how Christmas has become debased by commercialism and false bonhomie and increasingly removed from the true message of Christmas.

In the past, I have actively sought to spend Christmas away in a non-Christian country, but it is not an easily obtainable desire.

Not my favorite time of year for family reasons but I still try and be as happy as I can for everyone's sake, and I think its right to try. It is imprtant to many folk still, and my wife loved it. Its nice seeing the grandkids happy too. My son loves it too and Ive just purchased him a new tree.

Yes, I agree - Christmas is for family and children. As a singleton, and now without any family to consider, I can afford to be sceptical/cynical regarding the current perception of "The Winter Festival".

I'm a loner when it comes to christmas , only have 1 daughter who has lots to do at xmas , so I take a back seat and let her do her thing , No wife :) , a free agent , Christmas is massively over commercialised now

I remember when I was a child at christmas I only had about 5 gifts , A scalextric car , A beano annual , Action man clothing set , Chocolate stocking , and some money to put in my Post Office saving account . Then nothing till August when it was my birthday :)

I’m a full on Christian, and enjoy giving gifts to my loved ones. Having said that, I hate Christmas ads, shopping, and movies! Divorced and disabled, it just isn’t any fun anymore. But, each year I go to the family gathering, give away 100 times more than I receive, and feel depressed afterwards. It seems the true meaning of the holiday is lost, it’s all about, “how much did you get?”. And what about Rock versions of classic Christmas songs?

I just want to enjoy December as I do any other month. I think the main issue is not being allowed to feel as if I can step back and let others enjoy it if they want to.

I was having a nice evening with my friend and she said what are you doing for Christmas as if Ive got be be somewhere doing something to enjoy myself. The inference is which family member am I going to be bundled off to and the feeling that anybody is going to be sad if not joining the forced fun.

I get cards from people that have never phoned me and I havent phoned in years. Think about it...how ridiculous is that and you cant tell them not to bother or Im looked at like some sort of personality disorder loon.

The present giving and receiving lost any meaning for me about twenty five years ago and it was only any real fun opening a giant stocking as a kid. That was magical and perhaps thats where we should leave it for children to enjoy...then again the pressure is on for those children (and their parents) who wont get anything

I would rather my extended family bought a meal or treat for a homeless person or somebody in real need

Its such a stitch up job that anybody is seen as Scrooge McScrooge Face if they dont get into the spirit of Christmas :)

100% agree! It's fun though, laughing at pictures of vacuous chav imbeciles fighting over tat, like rabid dogs, as if it were the last morsel of food in existence... Risibly pathetic beyond words, but nonetheless great TV entertainment! :D

Christmas? I *love* it, but not the commercial side of things, which gets more out of control every year. You can keep that vulgar cack. As Catholics, Christmas is primarily about celebrating the birth of Christ (hence Christmas), so for us that always makes it special, and going to midnight mass on Christmas Eve :)

Then there's your friends and family coming round, spending time together having fun and enjoying each other's company, especially over some lovely food (I'm fortunate that Del is a great cook and my best friend an ex-chef), so I just take care of the drinks and do the washing up! :eyebrows:

Plus, Del's like a big kid and loves everything about Christmas. Therefore, one of the nicest feelings of the year for me is getting up early on Christmas morning, while she's still asleep, lighting the log fire downstairs, so that the room is nice and toasty for her, switching on the tree, lighting some candles, then playing some carols in the background - basically getting things all nice and Christmassy.

Then I'll make her some breakfast, with a nice cup of tea, and get her up, so that when she comes down, the room's really nice and she can enjoy her breakfast. Then we'll open up our presents together. And as she LOVES snow, this year I'm going to buy a snow machine (as I doubt any snow will fall naturally) and make the garden outside look all sparkly and white, which will give her a nice surprise when she looks out the window.......!

The biggest joy for me is making her happy. It's the least I can do, and show that she's appreciated, especially with all cooking she'll be doing later, preparing the goose, etc. However, she's off work then for two weeks, so plenty of time to relax and enjoy herself. So yes, bring on Christmas and let's party!! :partytime:

:christmas::santa:

Nice one, Grant. It's nice making a bit of an effort, and I'm sure that the family will appreciate it when they come round :)

We put the tree up on Del's birthday (13th December), and always turn it into a bit of an 'event', decorating it all, which she loves, before going out to celebrate her birthday later.

It's an expensive time of the year for me, as I've got Del's birthday on the 13th, our wedding anniversary on the 22nd, then Christmas!

I used to get sick of (or was it sick at) Work's Dos when I was working. Quite often there was the Work's Work's Do which was mandatory to attend if you wanted promotion, then the Office Do which was mandatory if you didn't want to be labelled a weirdo, anti-social, tightwad, then the Team Do which usually ended in a punch-up, or a divorce depending on your behaviour under the influence, and a malfunctioning photocopier.

Oh yes the work do...sat around a table with exactly the same power politics as in the office. Trying to make small talk with partners involved. We have in effect brought our partner along to experience the power politics as they all weigh you up. A night out when you cant actually relax...a night out at work......like doing overtime :)

The person bitching all year long trying to lose me my job. is making small talk with my partner. I can hear the veiled digs going in and heck knows what is being said by the end.. Horrendous and a form of torture. If you dont go you are antisocial and will never hear the last of it.

Its no wonder people reach for the alcohol which leads to all sorts of problems and job threatening situations. You cant win unless you are immune to the outcome.

It is a very good reason to hate Christmas :)

Macca
21-11-2017, 18:14
where I work you have to pay for your own Christmas do, the company contribute nothing. if it was free I would consider it, but since you have to pay, to essentially work overtime as Martin says, then no chance. I don't care what I am branded as a result and they know I don't care so they don't bother. Works for me.

I did once work at a place that put on a proper do, 3 course meal, free booze and a turn. One year we had Frank Skinner, he was on for about 3 hours, they couldn't get him off the stage. Never laughed so hard and so long in my life. He over ran so much they were still handing out the awards at one in the morning. There was always a few punch ups outside afterwards, fighting over whose taxi it was mostly, but occasionally over a woman. Those were the days.

Marco
