Hi all,

Here's a project I've finished with.

Output is slightly higher than the standard 2volts around 4/5volts, so will drive a power amp direct but is still usable with a preamp.

Spec:
Wolfson WM8740 DAC
DIR9001 digital receiver
PCM2902 USB interface
AM26C32 for SPDIF

Inputs USB, Optical or SPDIF
Input signal source scanned and selected automatically
Power supply for analog, digital and driver section are separate and independent
Double regulated before board, then step up and third stage regulation on board.

Valve output stage is SRPP using the most excellent 6N6P tube.
Input capacitors are Mundorf supreme and output capacitors are AmpOhm.
Two 6amp mains Transformers supply Dac regulators and stepped up again to provide HT for valves.
Smoothing is by quality polypropylene capacitors and choke with kiwarme resistors.

Case is solid beech sides with 5mm clear acrylic top/back and base. The top slides off for access. There is a small crack in back panel to the right hand side which isn't a problem.
The front is a sandwich of 10mm clear and 3mm transparent blue.

This thing rocks!

£300

I don't really what to post this.

Absobloodylootly incredible overkill!!!!!!!!!!!

I love it

I wonder if lower gain output valves could be used? 5V was the line level Decca used. If a preamp can safely match this level ok, then fine :)

It's bloody amazing isn't it, Steve? Yer a lucky boy! I heard the very chappie you've bought yesterday at Dunc's and was suitably gob-smacked!

Can you bring it round for a listen when you visit? PM me on that, incidentally, as we'll have to diary a suitable date if we're going to do it before the Scalford Hall show

Marco.

I need to make room for this DAC on my rack...and I can't wait. Just have to make the time. Also realise that the sound is immediately compromised by the sources feeding it. It'll be the Ikemi and wireless streamed audio from an Airport express from my iMac.

What Duncan has also shown to me this afternoon, is once more the sheer quality gained from a PC feeding WAV files converted from Flacs through ethernet into a Sony PS3...and then obviously into sublime valves and highly efficient speakers.
None of it mega buck stuff though.
Just breath-taking. Made me think about how I listen to music, and the way to go in future. Thanks Duncan... Look forward to meeting up again at Scalford

Not over keen on the Ikemi as a stand alone CD player - not enough 3-D for me, but the transport is supremely behaved IMO..

Good luck :)

The Ikemi was improved by playing through a Caiman. Much more instrument separation and detail.

Just a thought.
Is there any way of controlling the PS3 with a hand-held device (ipod/pda phone) rather than having to rely on the TV screen?

you can use a sony psp to remote control the ps3
it replicates what you would see on screen
you can do this anywhere in the world providing there is a wireless connection to the internet
you can choose where to route the sound out psp or ps3

I do the same thing - all pics and vids of my little'un on the PS3 - shown on the PSP to people - I can even watch TV either live or recorded (I have Play TV for PS3) from anywhere with wifi! Amazing!
