Every afternoon during the late autumn/winter months, between 4 and 5pm, just as daylight fades and turns to darkness, I'll be posting details of a creepy, often bizarre, ghost or horror film I'm watching, from the 1970s, when many of that genre were made, selected from the crusty vaults of YouTube...

So why not join me by watching it on the big screen of your Smart TV?

Draw the curtains/turn off the lights, snuggle up beside the fire and pour yourself a glass or cup of something warm and comforting, whilst going back in time to an era where they knew what dark and creepy was all about, without the need for any special effects...

Today's selection from the dank and musty caves of the macabre, is Gargoyles:

Noted. I'll check that out.

Well, Gargoyles was great! In the latter stages, it reminded me of an episode from the original Star Trek TV series, or an old Dr Who. If I'd watched that as a kid, I'd have had nightmares...

Creepy factor: 7

Anyone else got some good reccos for creepy/spooky films from the 1970s?

Well, that was interesting!

*Very*70s, in terms of the eerie soundtrack accompanying the film, which is one of the things I love in films from this decade, and that music was used to create tension and suspense, along with a rather 'dark' vibe throughout. Who needs special effects?

Creepy factor: 6

So what will be tomorrow's creepy film? Tune in and find out!

What is that late Sixties/early Seventies film where they are devil worshippers and Gordon Jackson is the copper investigating it? I'm pretty sure it is a Hammer film. At the end it turns out Jackson was one of them from the start.

Play the intro and listen to how the "Dead of Night" is described, and how it's depicted in the intro, in such a dark and eerie way, and you'll realise what I love about these old films!

Btw, this particular example is a trilogy of haunting tales...

Sorry, Neil, I watched this film last night, and while it was ok, it wasn't really my thing.

Well I say 'watched', but in fact I fell asleep halfway through it... There was none (or very little) of the accompanying eerie music I like, and I found it quite boring (too much talking and not enough action).

For me, it wasn't at all scary or macabre - and for these particular film selections, there has to be a strong element of that in the overall 'vibe'.

So.... A little too subtle for me, and probably one for purists of this genre. What I'm after is more disposable, pre-teatime 'froth' (but done well) that has a creepy/spooky theme and 'scare factor', and which doesn't require much concentration to follow...

Creepy Factor: 4

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. Maybe your next one will hit the spot? :)

We'll see if my chosen 'Horror Express' does so later. There are certainly enough good actors in it!

Horror Express is a reasonably good film, seen it a few times.

If we all liked the same thing it would be a boring world. The Stone Tape is a creeping horror and its really the last 15 mins when the more awful horror gets revealed. I think it interesting that the main thrust of the sub plot is the development of a new recording medium and digital is mentioned. Nigel Kneale is the writer behind Quatermas and The Stone Tape was commissioned as a Christmas ghost story.

Indeed. I think it was the fact that it had a 'sub-plot', which was the problem (too much thinking)! :D

And sadly, I never got to experience the all-important "awful horror", during the last 15 mins, simply because of ennui... ;) I'm afraid that if a film doesn't 'hook' me within the first 15 mins, and takes too long to get going, I don't have the attention span or patience necessary to wait until it does!

No, I just need something simple (but effective) to 'wash over me' before teatime. Disposable light entertainment. Yes, you'll have guessed that I'm a not a film connoisseur! :eyebrows:

Well, I watched the 'Horror Express' earlier, and it was excellent!

Ticked all the right boxes for me, for the purpose of this exercise: uncomplicated, straightforward plot, quite dark and moody overall (which I like), well-acted, got to the point quickly, and crucially, was accompanied by the all-important eerie 1970s sound effects! :)

Plus, it depicted old steam trains, and in particular, first-class rail travel from a time when it really was FIRST CLASS. I just love everything about those old carriages: the vintage decor, the individual 'booths', closed off for privacy, and the standards of service and food on board.

It simply makes me want to travel on the Orient Express even more, which Del and I will definitely do at some point soon. Venice - Simplon would be good. Or perhaps on the Eastern and Oriental!

Anyway, 'Horror Express' hit the spot nicely and comes highly recommended, for anyone who hasn't seen it.

Creepy factor 8.5

Lol - great stuff, Barry - cheers!

Some of my favourite films of all time are on that list :)

I will be continuing the 'creepy films' theme. It's just that I've been busy around that time for the last couple of nights, but hope to resume matters tomorrow.

I've seen almost all of those on the list. Some are a waste of celluloid others are great and a few, like the fog, are classics of the genre and time. IMO

Ok, tonight's selection of cobwebbed creepy classics, slightly later than usual, comes from 1971, where something very sinister is happening in this particular dwelling.....

Well, that one was fab and ticked all the right boxes, significantly due to the plethora of good actors featured, coupled with great story lines and the ubiquitous infectiously eerie music, one only encounters in films of this genre and era. Wonderful stuff! :)

Creepy factor: 8.5

And now, as daylight fades and the creatures of the night awaken to claim the land until dawn, let's huddle together and lock all the doors, as lurking in the shadows, ready to claim your soul, is The Night Strangler....

Surprised nobody has mentioned Suspiria (Dario Argento 1977), a classic "spaghetti horror". Music by "spaghetti prog-rock" band Goblin.

There's also Nosferatu the Vampyre (Werner Herzog, 1979). Music by Kraut-rock band Popol Vuh.

Re The Devils, amazing film, not a true horror but certainly some very disturbing scenes that could qualify it as such. Took me ages to find it on DVD, think it was a rip off from a VHS.

And now I really want to mention this film as it is my all time classic horror, but it's way out in the time scale. The Black Cat starring Karloff and Lugosi (not to be confused with a terrible Black Cat from the 40s I think). One of the best films ever made full stop. At times the imagery and atmosphere in it is unsurpassed (especially considering when it was made and that it was a Hollywood blockbuster) except maybe by the original Nosferatu.

Agree with you about 'Suspiria' - an excellent film and for some reason one I neglected to include on my list.

There were several films titled The Black Cat, all based on the book by Edgar Allen Poe (some more loosely than others). The 1934 film with Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff is one of the better ones, though it owes more to Aleister Crowley than to Poe. The 1941 remake (also starring Lugosi) was a feeble attempt, completely lacking all of the menace of Poe's story.

Quite often remakes are poor: one example being (appropriately) 'Cat People'. The 1942 Val Lewton film starring Simone Simon was excellent, creepy and atmospheric, with much of the horror suggested and left to the imagination of the viewer. Whereas the 1982 remake, starring Nastassia Kinski, is longer with more explicit horror but is, IMO, all the poorer for it.

Both versions are superb IMO and the soundtrack from the recent version is I think some of Thom Yorke's best work.

Yeah, loved Suspiria... Got any good reccos for some totally fucked-up horror/psychological thrillers from the 1970s [must be from that era].

The Vampire Lovers (Hammer 1970)

One of the first of hammers erotic horror films. Their version of Camilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu, a vampire story that pre dates Dracula.

Last time round you watched Twin of Evil which is the last in this trilogy about the Karnstein family, this one is the first. Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter is a related film, it was to have been a TV series, alas that didn't happen. Love that film, one of my favourites.

My faves are (not all hammer)

The house that dripped blood
Twins of evil
Vampire lovers
Countess dracular
The wicker man
The devil rides out
Lust for a vampire
Blood from the mummies tomb
Corruption
Vampyres
The devil's nightmare (Italian)
Fear in the night

... to name more than a few.

I must admit to knowing the scripts by heart of all of the above. Love watching them.

Of course the hammer series versions are also brilliant with Carparhian Eagle, Guardian of the Abyss and The house that bled to death are a few of my absolute faves but I like them all.

Also love the kenny everett film Bloodbath in the house of death. Lol

My uncle used to write to Peter Cushing and he replied quite a few times. The first hammer film I saw was twins of evil and weirdly that was my uncles favorite too.

The films of that era had an innocent yet disturbing vibe and not the all out typical 'postage stamp' horror films which were designed for the american market. Ugh.

Many had a dark yet intellectual aspect and were really well made.

Yes the blood was ketchup but that aside the casts were pretty amazing and the screenplay was one of a kind.

A good modern cult style film I like is The Love Witch.

And one of my all time modern cult films is A field in England.

'Repulsion' 1965 is a proper horror movie. Rather different to most and uncomfortably weird. B&W though, so Marco may not approve. :)

Agreed! Catherine Deneuve is brilliant as someone suffering a nervious breakdown with fatal consequences. The amount of blood shown is minimal (in fact I think the only blood letting occurs in the salon).

Seen it many times but have yet to obtain a copy.

I remember as a kid watching an old black & white horror film which seemed to involve victims being handed a bit of paper with some symbols (runes?) written on it. Which would then make a flying beeline for the nearest fire. After which the victim would be visited by some monster. That was proper creepy. Anyone have any idea what it might have been called?

The other one to look out for is the 1945 'Dead of Night' anthology film with Michael Redgrave. The part with Hugo the dummy puppet is truly hair raising! Redgrave's acting here was fantastic. Proper spooky!!

I heard it once called a portmanteau.
