KEF IQ7se opinion

Hi all,

I might have the opportunity to pick up a pair of KEF IQ7se for very sensible money.

Has anyone got any experience with them?

Would be used for hi-fi only.

Ooh well ... if you can get them at a good price the you should be able to move them on if they don't gel.

I have a suspicion they are going to sound a bit 'hi-fi' compared to your Pioneers, but that's just a guess.

KEF do seem to be pushing the technology, so benefits trickling down to lower price models :)

Jimbo has heard the LS50 and Blades so maybe can offer an opinion on the KEF approach.

If you get them, don't go mad with volume levels. There are a few of that series about with blown tweeters, probably overdriven.

I have a pair of iq 50s, havent heard the 70s but mine are bright in the treble department.

I love 57s and spendors so it may just be that im a pipe and slippers man!

yep probably the most fatiguing speaker ive ever had. Different dacs/amps/cables-tried the lot.

They image really well and have a great bass and control but the treble is awfull

Your Pioneers would retail for at least a couple of grand if they were still made today. A budget floorstander will never get the better of them. At best it would just be different.

Yeah I would never sell my Akai SW175s, very similar to your Pioneers and from the same era. The big JM Labs that replaced them are not better, just different. They can't play bass like the Akais can, and I don't mean depth or power but with the Akais you can practically identify the model of bass guitar that is being played, the tone is so clear.

These Pioneers were a revelation. I owe Geoff a huge pint for A) recommending them and B) refoaming the drivers for me.

You won't go far wrong listening to Geoff. He knows vintage. Probably because he is vintage. ;) I got mine because I'd read for years in the mags that they would be rubbish but I wanted to see for myself.

I don't know about turning noses up, but these are not on most folk's radar.

The original Spendor S100 from about 25 years ago. Beautifully balanced sound and punchy with it! Rare though.

There aren't that many speakers I'd want, but these are towards the top of my list.

Mind you there are a lot of rubbish 'Kabuki' speakers out there too. You have to do your research to get a quality set. People hear a pair of the crap ones and then tar them all with the same brush.

I would not go for any of the KEF speakers in their lower range and I would even give the reference range a pass especially as they are mega expensive.

However the LS5O is superb and the blades are something else altogether! The blades are truly extraordinary. Problem is they are £20,000!!

If you are referring to the recently introduced 'tribute' S100 model Oliver, It's completely different apart from the visual similarity.

I've seen the old ones for between £500 and £1000, but not for a while. As I said, they're rare.

The S100s were compared to ATC when first out, but 'a little more fruity' they were described as, and Hi-Fi News stated that they were close to a panel in sound.

There is a current later model.

I have spendor sp1s on the original open stands. I have 57s and 63s and can confirm the spendors do indeed sound very like my statics-they just do more bass.

My wife adores them and has banned me from selling them.
