HDMI to TOSLILINK/coax. Anything I need to look out for or care about?

Time to put together a digital setup. I like my old DAC and I imagine that I'll be using a raspberry pi as the source. I'll need a HDMI-to-optical (or coax) converter to get them together.

Are all converters the same, or is there anything to be aware of? Cheap chhinese off ebay is always the first place I look

edit: for what it's worth, I use a non-oversampling dac

Is there any real reason to expect that to be better than an ebay one which is about 1/4 of the price?

Where do you envisage HDMI fitting in with your proposed set up?

Storm Digital D02 DAC. I'm long out out of the loop with digital, but my plan was just: Pi (hdmi out) -> toslink converter -> DAC

Come to think of it, another option is: Pi -> USB toslink adapter -> DAC

No immediate plans to do anything else with the pi. No video or anything

Could not find much on your DAC other than some HK guy called Ken Law having sold some ages ago.

The add-in board that Chris linked to has s/pdif output which your DAC should be able to read. The add-in board would be added to the Pi you are planning to build. What makes you want to go the Pi route?

Yeah the Storm d02 is a nice sounding DAC that ended in drama- the guy who makes them took a bunch of pre-orders and then disappeared. very enjoyable to listen to though. I managed to get my hands on one though, and enjoy it very much

I'm thinking of going the pi route because I have a one laying around, used (along with a touch screen that piggybacks onto the board. Music currently stored on an external HDD in FLAC.

Many moons ago I had my old pi set up as a media server and connected it to the DAC via a USB-to-spdif box. This was back before the pi had hdmi

My first reaction to say "digital's digital. 1's and 0's have no reason to change regardless of the output device", but It's been a long time since I was last using a digital setup
