Ebay charges

Have you noticed just how damn expensive it is to sell on ebay. One pound to advertise if you only use one photo and then ten percent of anything you sell it for and then three and a half percent for your Paypal usage. Is it really worth it...???

Then it's about 4.5% paypal charge isnt it! if the buyer pays this way (against e-bay rules to charge the buyer the percentage your being charged) ...I used to sell a lot of gear on E-Bay & made a tidy sum till they got greedy, destroying everything for sellers in the process...I can see a serious decline in sales on there, i'm done with it anyhow.It just not worth it to be honest.

What were you selling to get that charge? The last few auctions I've done have only cost 12p to 22p to list. Also never pay for them to host your images, just drop HTML code from Photobucket etc in the listing for free. You use one picture only to get something in the list view.

Given the amount of people on there and the likelihood that you'll get a good price when selling, I still consider it to be an economic way of selling, although it has become a little pricier lately.

On another point, can I ask why you centre all your posts? Makes it quite tricky to read.

When will ePay Management learn... Fees increase, sellers flee, less insertions, result fees increase, more sellers flee etc.

eBay was very good about 5+ years ago. Went down the pan over the last few years and now auction listings are 10% FVF. I have noticed a steady decline over the last few years.

they have got bloody greedy.. especially as paypal is (i think) owned by ebay and they are quite insitant on users using it.
i will still sell on ebay im sure, but the charges do bug me quite a lot, i cant see why they have to be so high when in real terms ebay does very little for the money

Except offer the facilities to trade, and do so internationally.

Why Neil?

They still have to put in a highest bid - if it's higher than yours they win. If not then you win. The timing of a bid should be irrelevant.
Put in your best bid, just like they will.

there is that... but why has it got more expensive... they take a percentage ... so its not even like the cost has gone up proportionate to inflation... they have got more greedy as time has gone on and thier monopoly over the internet auction market has increased ... there is no excuse for it

I've never used a sniper program! For a start, its a really really bad idea to disclose any username and password anywhere other that where it is needed by the owner/user to log in! I believe the sniper program needs all this info to log in to ebay and bid on your behalf. Most Ebay accounts are linked via paypal to you bank account. Would you tell me or any other user you're online log in detail for your bank account?????:scratch:

I personally leave my biding until the last seconds. The more bidding that takes place during the auction, the more the price is artificially raised. F5 was my favourite key but now the java in the code for the webpage will countdown the final seconds of the auction for you. 2 pages open is a must. 1 one the item counting down and 1 with the bid ready to place!!!!

I'll have been an ebay member for 10 years this July, and my strategy as a buyer has never wavered from Ian's description above. Patience is the key - I learned early on, that very rarely is it really the "opportunity of a lifetime" - in fact, some things I was searching for 10 years ago I am still after now!

The best bet with ebay (as a buyer) is to search obliquely - I may have mentioned before that I "collect" diecast models, and today won one I have been after for several years, at a bargain price (£31 vs, £155 the last one sold for) mainly because the seller misspelt the model name, and listed it in the wrong category - but by and large there are no bargains any more, as market forces have taken over, just as they have with ebay taking the pee on insertion fees and commission - but then the overall cost (value) of a lot of things we would normally throw away have increased immeasurably because of ebay - all it does is match buyers to sellers, and it still does it very well.

One of the back lashes with the high charges is the seller seems to cover it by adding it onto his postage, it's so obvious in some instances, this puts potential bidders off, by restricting bidding, or not bothering at all..

The postage issues are being addressed though by maximum postage charges (for the first postage option) for certain items. There's a list on eBay's news pages. The idea is that the first option must be limited to the set amount, then other options can be made available (e.g. 1st option [limited] to: £1.00, 2nd option RMSD at £3.99, 3rd option Courier at £5.50 etc) thereby ensuring that there's always a reasonable postage charge for the item.

Makes good sense.

You can thank Meg Whitman CEO of Ebay now running for governer of California.
She also cut jobs here.
But she made Ebay alot of money so I guess she did her job as far as Ebay is concerned.
But I feel she will hurt them in the long game.Much like I think she would screw California tax payers if elected.
