Hank Mobley – tenor, Wynton Kelly – piano, Paul Chambers – bass, Art Blakey – drums... all on their A game, great playing and wonderful tunes.
A heads up for the ultimate SQ reissue of this title is the Music Matters 45rpm cut, a work of art, reproduced with passion and love..of course at a price (£50) but it's a classic record that warrants it IMHO,
arguably better sounding and certainly cheaper than an original Blue Note W63rd copy, which in good nick will set you back a cool £2,000 !

Prompted by your post Adam I went and got the 2013 remaster of this. Really good, alive and 'present'. Whatever they were recording this album with in 1960 was just right. Oh yes, Jan Garbarek 'Twelve Moons', what a fantastic album and I think it features Eberhard Weber on bass doesn't it. What an absolute musical genius. I love this as an alternative to Brian Eno's ambient music.

Hi Edward, I'm pretty damn sure the original recording engineer, The LEGENDARY Mr. Rudy Van Gelder, remastered his own original tapes for those 2013 CD reissues.
Only Rudy Van Gelder was to really know how these sessions were to sound, so it completes the circle for the man himself to do the remasters. As we all know the dreaded remaster by other engineers
have seriously messed up some great recordings. Interestingly the first CDs in the 1980's from Blue Note were, I believe, lifted directly from cleaned up Vinyl rips and sounded bloody terrible,
produced with little care and thought and just desperate to get them on the CD medium as quick as possible, not remastered and not touched by RVG himself.
If your are unfamiliar with RVG, i beg you to just internet search him, truly an astonishing body of work. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall at Englewood Cliffs Studio in the late 50's to the late 60's!!
RVG was an absolute perfectionist. You can hear Miles Davis on a particular RVG session requesting if Miles himself could just move a Mic a tad...RVG was having none of it!
An optometrist by trade, and in the early years kept his day job and recorded the likes of Coltrane in the evening at his home studio. Just Remarkable.
Anyway i'll do a piece on Rudy Van Gelder on this forum because he is basically the Don!
You are due a visit with your amp over to mine and I will give you wizz through a few of those Music Matters reissues in comparison to the Original Blue Notes. Quite something to hear.

Agreed Barry, ECM is a great label, the sound quality on the records is on another level!!
I always drop an ECM title when seeing what kit can do, it really sorts the men from the boys.
Pat Metheny's Off Ramp and Charlie Haden/ Carla Bley 'The Ballad of the fallen' (cheery ditty!!) are wonderful.

I signed up for a two albums a month subscription thing (the De Agostino Jazz on Vinyl series) precisely because my knowledge of jazz is so limited, and this was a good way to get to know more about it and find new avenues - and it's definitely worked in that regard. (It's also functioned to confirm what I hate ... I once left an Ornette Coleman gig at half time because I was - and remain - convinced he was taking the piss - free jazz, I just can't handle it at all).
Anyway I've had a few new leads here already :)

Haha.. yes imho, I have to agree to an extent a lot of 'free jazz' is having a laugh.
But it's an interesting subject actually. The "New Music" as it was called at the time, late 50's early 60s,
Was a reflection of social unjust and alienation. We have to remember these musicians knew how to read and play in
The structured and conventional way, so this direction was a decision they took. These were young, mostly men, often very angry and frustrated by society and what America had done and what it had to offer them.
If you take John coltrane for instance, there he was at the height of his career, famous, in demand, relatively wealthy and creatively at his peak. He led the most in demand and highly rated quartet in the genre. After producing arguably his masterpiece, A Love Supreme, he literally over night, disbanded the quartet.
He stated he did not want the confinement of the conventional Jazz set up where the rock and epicentre was the piano, so he basically sacked McCoy Tyner and changed the line up bringing in Rashied Ali, to be the second drummer along side Elvin Jones. (Elvin by the way was having none of this)
The rest is history as Coltrane entered his "free period". He wouldn't acknowledge the word 'Jazz' as that pigeon holed his music and refused to play the club circuit as it confined him to hour long sets, indeed at this time a coltrane horn solo could last an hour easily! But the point is, these were technically gifted, trained sight reading musicians who chose to take that route at a point in their careers. Commercial suicide. The music was slated!! Down Beat, the Jazz journal bible killed them.
People we're outraged.
Some of the recorded avant-garde stuff stands up pretty well 50+ years on as it took no trend so became timeless. There is a fascinating book on the whole 'New Music" movement of the time entitled 'As serious as your life' by female British writer, who loved jazz and went to live In New York, Val Wilmer. She gets up close and really digs deep into these musicians. It's a good read. The coltrane documentary, Chasing Trane, is a great film and touches heavily on his change of direction.
So taking the piss or an expression of art, the soul and energy?
Many years ago, I walked laughing out of a gig by American saxophonist Don Byron, when he started to play a hosepipe
And was accompanied by a chap banging a bent wood saw. I'm pretty sure they were taking the piss!! Although everyone around me seemed to take it very seriously with much goatee stroking..

Just listening to Duke Ellington's Blues in Orbit which recorded in 1959. Amazing clarity, range and presence. Why oh why are most modern recordings done so poorly these days! Grrrrr... :doh:

Marcin Wasilewski Trio: Spark of Life.
First heard/saw this trio 15 years ago, when they were young musicians with the great Tomasz Stanko at the Barbican, playing their great lyrical album, The Soul of Things. On this 2014 album, they are joined by tenor saxophonist Joakim Milder, and make more beautiful music. Marcin is certainly one of the most melodic jazz pianists out there, and the understanding he has with his fellow trio-members is truly telepathic after two decades of playing together.
On the ECM label, which means it's not on streaming platforms, I believe. But, here's a couple of youtube things, which give a flavour ...

Brad Mehldau: Largo
An incredible LP from Pianist Brad Mehldau
Radiohead's "Paranoid Android" is a highlight but it's all killer and no filler on this date.
Brad Mehldau never stays still for very long!..He morphs into many different projects over the years form
Solo Piano, Classical recitals, Jazz Trios, Duos (with Josh Redman & mandolinist/singer Chris Thile), Opera with Anne Sofie Von Otter, & Electronica with Mark Guiliana
and collaborations with Pat Metheny quartet.
Largo is a very interesting Album and holds the attention to the last note.
Pretty expansive but grounded at the same time.

My daughter is in the school play and her character has a Scottish accent. we have been using this video as a coaching tool for the accent.
Her accent is more Scouse than Scots, but we are getting there.
The drama teacher is giving her a bit of leeway regarding re- scripting, and thanks to my “native” input, her play now includes some authentic Scots slang.
Including ( im proud to say ) “ awa an’ bile yer hied “ and “jings crivens, help ma boab”

I dont know if you know the story of the “Lost Tribe”.....very interesting.
Some words can have multiple meanings. It can be confusing. Its all in the inflection.
For example when I first heard that video and the use of the word “eleven”, I thought they were talking about bread :)

Barry lovely choices there matey, the Mingus is the dogs dangling bits! ...I however have to slightly disagree with you on the Charles Lloyd Quote... IMHO he is a true giant and will be appreciated when he has gone more than he is now. The work he commits to disk with ECM is in part extraordinary. I personally love his tone, being slightly left and free but very accessible to which I know is perceived opposites. At least I get away with his Tenor horn sound with my lovely wife's approval. Lloyd and Coltrane are the few she can appreciate(not comparing him to JC!) He's sublime live too in his later years. If you get the chance to see him now grab it!

Well he is certainly more 'vocal' 'nasal' on some records than others.
Off the top of my head I think 'Standards Vol 1 & 2 'suffer' less.
But I think in small doses it's pretty charming.. sounds like he's enjoying himself..
Although there are times I've thought .. Keith, leave it out!

Some of Oscar Peterson's recordings are similar, but either he or the engineer have the good sense to keep it low key.
With Jarrett, I often feel the need to swat that crazed mosquito from out of my ear! I can appreciate that he is getting into it, but the tone and maniacal quality of it ruin a lot of his work for me, which otherwise is borderline genius.
And I live here, but am far from a Mancunian!
