Good one Adrian! I came across this a while back listening to the Jazz UK playlist on Spotify - the tune Bardo is one of the standouts in the 50 or so songs on that list. I've listened to the whole album a few times since then -- all good stuff on there.

Listened to this one again last night on CD:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9b/Friday_Blackhawk.jpg

Mile Davis, live at the Blackhawk, vol. 2; Sept. 1961.

Very good indeed! His quintet included Hank Mobley on sax and Wynton Kelly piano, and he really lets them take centre stage on a few tracks. Some great, straight-ahead bebop here. Very approachable, excellent ensemble.

It's a great album, but as you say deserves to be listened to rather than background music. Can't seem to get enough MD at the moment!

I'm with you Tim. I think we have more Miles Davis in our jazz collection than any other artist. If you like his earlier stuff, and live albums, then have a listen to My Funny Valentine, The Complete Concert 1964. It's a double album with some outstanding playing. George Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams round out the quintet. A classic.

This may not be new news to some of you, but I was floored when I heard the opening notes to this tune by Horace Silver:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFjmWI-d6d4

The opening notes are the same as Ricky Don't Lose That Number by Steely Dan. One of the many examples of old inspiring the new.

Great tune by Silver...wonderful piano work on this live recording.

Speaking of elevator jazz, I have a good friend who only listens to Smooth Jazz on the satellite radio in his car...Bebop is " Too frantic". I can't do road trips with him, as after two songs I want to either bail out of the moving vehicle or tear out the radio :steam: Next time I will bring earplugs, or noise cancelling headphones and my iPod.

Will try to find Les Dawson on Spotify... Can hardly wait... :)

Been playing this. Beautiful melodies and especially recorded well. Massive attention to detail, wide open sounds. Great piano, bass and drums.

Hazelrigg Brothers - songs we like.

Great interpretations of Jimi H, Led Z etc.

Duke Pearson ‎– I Don't Care Who Knows It (recorded 1968 -1970)
A fabulous session which was shelved by Blue Note, inexplicably! until 1996 when they released 6 of the
tracks on Vinyl and a later CD release had all 11 session Tracks.

Word is, it has just been released in its entirety, all 11 tracks for the first time on Double Vinyl 180gsm and all that audiophile from tapes jive. It is due out Now if not out already, Limited edition only 1000 world wide press.

http://www.wallenbink.com

Anyway it's on the streaming services and is just a wonderful set. From the funky title Track feat, Andy Bey
to full Brazilian work outs. I think the only reason it was shelved for so long was Blue Note didn't know how to market it in 1970 being such an eclectic recording

Acoustic Guitar – Ralph Towner
Bass Bob Cranshaw & Ron Carter
Drums – Airto Moreira & Mickey Roker
Percussion, Vocals – Airto Moreira
Piano, Electric Piano, Arranged By – Duke Pearson
Tenor Saxophone, Alto Clarinet – Frank Foster
Vibraphone – Bobby Hutcherson
Vocals – Andy Bey , Flora Purim
are just a few on the date among others...

https://i.imgur.com/1KzrjBA.jpg

postscript to this record: Being a nerd, I have access to a pdf of Blue Note's A&R man, Duke Pearson's personal session note book and this session is in there spread over a few pages. Very interesting view for the anoraks. a sample of a couple of pages below:

Just 'discovered' or rather finally paid proper attention to a time in music that I'd always adored, 50s/60s Jazz. Been buying quite a lot of Blue Note cds off Ebay, after advice that the Ron McMaster remastered ones from the 80s were the best. Current stand out favourite is Horace silver 'Song for my father', Art Blakey - Moanin, Cannon ball adderly - something else, Sonny Rollins - Newks time - track 3 'Wonderful wonderful!'. Finally hearing Lee Morgan 'Sidewinder' properly, its much more laid back and sophisticated than I'd remembered. And an absolute revelation on CD is 'Out to Lunch' (Eric Dolphy), it puts my cheapo vinyl reissue in the shade to put it mildly, love this LP, and this CD version is an absolute joy.

Some great music you list there mike
Can I ask about the remastering, where did You gleen Ron McMaster remasters were better?
I have always had the understanding that Rudy Van Gelder remasters , later, were where it’s at.
After all if anyone should know how that music was to be presented, it would have been RVG, the chap who originally recorded the sessions?

IMHO the early CD masters of the late 80s on Blue Note were pretty poor. Hence later the massive task Blue note undertook in persuading RVG to remasters vast amount of the Blue Note catalogue.

I know some of the RVGs are criticised for being overly bright but I think it’s a title by title thing.
Some are good some not so. Rudy had good gears though.

A lot of the guys on PFM swear by the McMaster remasters, and completely slate the RVG ones! So being a complete newbie to cds I just went for the McMaster ones, to my ears they sound great, and are very cheap as well. Whichever way most of them sound better than whatever vinyl reissues I happen to have. I should buy one or two RVG ones to compare.

Stanley Turrentine

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181223/f30aaf14d191c6b47ee00bf433e4c06e.jpg

In an interview from 1974, the Pittsburgh-born tenor player revealed that his father instilled in him at an early age the need to develop his own voice. “When I was younger, my lesson for the day would be one note,” he remembered. “My father would say, ‘Stand in the corner and play a note.’” Though this disciplined and laborious approach initially mystified the young Stanley, he realised the value in his father’s advice. “There’s so many ways you can hit one note,” he later said. “There’s a way you attack the note, the way you breathe, how much air you put into the horn, the vibrato.”

Good one Adam :). Let me know how you like it. He has done quite a number of albums, so I will be listening to more in the near future.

As a general comment, I find that many artists who play in this style can sound rather sterile, lacking emotion. Sakamoto is one of the few who really move me.

Best,
Svend

Being a complete Grant Green nut, i purchased this rather expensive lost LP
(came out last Record Store Day, amid mucho hypo)
I have to say it's very very disappointing, to the point, I'm actually taking it back to where I got it, (it was a used purchase) I don't give up on many Lps, but this is IMHO pretty sub standard for such a creative talent. When 2 sides of the double lp are called 'Medley', i should have smelt a rat. Unearthed hidden gems are very rarely 'gems'

Avoid, there are so many brilliant Grant Green Lps in the cannon, this is not one of them!

Can't stop listening to these guys lately:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/39/Revelator_cover.jpg

Tedeschi Trucks Band, Revelator. This won a Grammy for best blues album.

The band has a country blues rock sound which I really like. Their latest studio album is especially so:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d3/LetMeGetBy.jpg

This album won a Blues Award for Rock-Blues Album of the Year.

The lead singer, Susan Tedeschi, has a fantastic voice...sounds a lot like Bonnie Raitt to my ears. Lead guitar is her husband, Derek Trucks -- solid playing!

Blues guitar is not really an area I know too much about, but I love this guys playing.
He really is fantastic. The slide stuff he does hits the right spot for me.

There is some great videos out there where he is jamming with BB king and John Mayer ( no slouch either ) and when Trucks plays, the looks on the faces of King and Trucks is just great.

Here is a taste of his soloing.

Hey, thanks Brian. I didn't know about those videos. I will check them out later...

And, yes, Trucks' playing is outstanding. Fluid, meaty, solid stuff. Between that and Tedeschi's singing (that voice!) -- quite the combination.

Interesting you should say that Adam. Just this morning I was listening to Ross Porter's show on Jazz FM 91.1 (he is the head of that local jazz station, and is a veteran broadcaster and jazz community leader here in Canada), and he said the best concert he ever attended was a show by Tord Gustavsen. No faint praise coming from him. So, duly noted! I'll keep my eyes open for a concert near here.

Jazz played on banjo and harmonica - and it's a really good album, well worth a listen.

A boring album cover, but some good tunes here:

Marcus Roberts with Wynton Marsalis. The tune Mack the Knife is great fun, a real toe tapper.
