On any format, Yes, they certainly made some great music.
The early passing of Svensson, just 44, was a tragic loss.

Good one Grant. Coincidentally we listened to this last evening while enjoying a happy hour cocktail. Hadn't heard it in ages and forgot how much fun it is. Great playing, and excellent recording quality. This one was THE audio system auditioning recording back in the '90s, at least in these parts. Stereophile and TAS were always using this as one of their references.

This should be an essential addition to anyone's jazz collection. The Gonsalves sax solo in "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" is legendary, and if it doesn't get you on your feet dancing, well there's no helping you :mental: :)

Two for the Blues.
I have the jazz genre selected on random play on my SBT. Every now and then, an absolute cracker that you have either never heard, or did and didn't remember it the first time, emerges. So far I have had brilliant stuff ranging from Yusef Lateef and Miles Davis to Get the Blessing, Kamasi Washington, Josef Limberg and Mammal Hands.

Agreed! A very talented musician who deserves more attention. I think it was Jamie Cullum's most recent show (it's rebroadcast here in Toronto every Saturday on our local jazz station) where I heard Snafu from Eastern Sounds. But that was the first time I'd heard anything by him in years. Maybe with BBC 2 playing him Lateef will become better known, at least in the UK and hopefully here as well.
I'm listening to Cry Tender now -- wonderful stuff. Some of the tenor sax ballads are sublime. Good recommendation!

I can see why. I had a proper, more attentive listen late last night, and this album really is outstanding. Every tune can hold it's own, but together they make an album that's up there with the best. I will buy this on disc now....hopefully vinyl if I can find it.

I struggled with some of it; as I do with a lot of late Coltrane. But at times I feel the need to be challenged - so on with the Ornette Coleman!
For those who are Spotify listeners, head's up on a good playlist called Jazz UK. It's a compilation of contemporary artists, and there's some really good stuff there. Some standouts for me have been Matthew Halsall, GoGo Penguin, Blue Lab Beats, Ill Considered, Robert Mitchell Trio, Ezra Collective, and a few others. Definitely a different style than what I'm used to hearing here on our local jazz FM radio station. Very refreshing change.

Experienced Ornette Coleman (Live) with Pat Metheny. Had to see if it made any more sense than listening to 'Song X' did.
not really.
but then again; I saw Sonny Rollins in the late 60s which was just as weird. Stan Tracey on piano just sat there, not playing for the first session!

That looks interesting. I have a couple of 'Play Bach' records, which I have to confess I do like.
The trouble is where do you post? Jazz lovers will tell you it's not Jazz, and classical music lovers will say it's an affront to Bach, Satie etc.

You don't have to go far in the Netherlands to hear live jazz. Several bars in Amsterdam have it, as well as Den Haag, Leiden, Delft etc. And there is also the North Sea Jazz Festival to attend, which is normally held around this time of the year.

Too funny! Reminds me of the reaction of a dear friend, who is a very accomplished classical guitarist, when I leant her our Miles Davis Sketches of Spain disc. When asked later for an opinion, her outrage, stated in not-so-quiet voice, caused a whole table of guests at a dinner party to fall off their chairs laughing. Near sacrilegious, in her mind. I had to ply her with copious glasses of wine (and extra dessert!) just to calm her down. :D

Christian McBride, Gettin' To It:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/39/Gettin%27_to_It_-_album_cover.jpg
This is his debut album as a solo artist. For those not familiar, he is one of the "young lions" -- jazz virtuosos of the '90's, along with guys like Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, etc. McBride is an outstanding bass player. If you read his bio on Wikipedia, it's pretty darn impressive.
As a debut album it's a pretty darn good one. Certainly helped by his bandmates -- Roy Hargrove (trumpet, flugelhorn); Joshua Redman (tenor sax); Steve Turre (trombone); Cyrus Chestnut (piano); Lewis Nash (drums); and Ray Brown & Milt Hinton (bass on "Splanky").
We've had this in our CD collection since it was released, and still gets regular play.
Here's another good album from two of the Young Lions:
https://cps-static.rovicorp.com/3/JPG_500/MI0001/665/MI0001665039.jpg?partner=allrovi.com
Tokyo Sessions, 1991 -- Roy Hargrove, trumpet, Antonio Hart, sax, with three Japanese musicians on bass, piano and drums. High energy, straight-ahead hard bop. Great album! A fave in our house.

its the bbc's way of trying to ensure everyone pays the £160 a year licence.. its far to much for me, especially as i never watch their programs. they even got it integrated into sky so that if you have sky you have to pay the their licence too.

Don't blame you. That really blows. Thumbs down :(
Even if you don't own a TV, you still pay, one way or another, for all the commercial channels that advertise the products you buy.

Thanks Adam for the link to the book - looks like a Christmas present to myself! :)

Love Don Wilkerson ! Big ballsy Texas Tenor, he was a member of the Ray Charles band for a while doing the circuit. Made 3 great Blue Note lps. This is the only one with a piano the others are Organ combos. Great choice Grant!
