.................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .........Post no 999!
And now up to Post no. 1000. No wonder I can't keep up! So much music, so little time.... sigh... :)
Listening to this one right now....

Marsalis and Clapton Play the Blues, Live at Lincoln Center. These guys are having fun! You can hear them laughing on stage. Not for serious listening :)

It is for serious listening....serious fun!
It is for serious listening....serious fun!
So right! You know, every now and then one needs to put on some music that is just a joy to listen to, where the musicians are obviously feeling the same and playing for the sheer fun of it. This album is one of those. A good recording of Bach's orchestral suites do it for me in the classical realm. Shelley Manne in jazz. Some of the Allmann Bros. in rock..... I could go on....
But I'm waxing philosophic again. It's late Thursday and time for a beer!
Pink Anderson...vol2
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180727/2c952fd80efe4d9aba844361a6de5e83.png
Pinkey played Pidemont blues, and was discovered later in life, spending most of his time in a medicine show.
As an aside, pink Floyd got their name from his "pink" name.. the floyd came from floyd council.
Think it was Syd Barrett's idea.
Diana Krall live in Paris..the Olympia i think.. sort of a live great American songbook. Great musical skills from all concerned.

Nina Simone...at Town Hall. This was her 4th album recorded in 1959 in New York. She is ably supported by Al tootie Heath on drums and Jimmy Bond on bass.
Possibly her best ever recording and the while experience at time must have been superb for all including her as you hear her whoop with delight at times. Some of the songs were rerecorded in studio with original applause added etc.(for clarity)

Dexter Gordon - Gettin' Around
Blue Note Records May 28-29, 1965. Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs.
Dexter Gordon - tenor saxophone
Bobby Hutcherson - vibes
Barry Harris - piano
Bob Cranshaw - bass
Billy Higgins - drums
Dexter’s last major release for Blue Note, after which he moved to Europe, to Copenhagen, where he could continue to play modern jazz.

(6 feet 6 inches) Long Tall Dexter was incredible!.
A story from a journo/broadcaster on the BBC, once said, during his set at Ronnie Scott’s in London, in the middle of his pianist soloing, Dexter left the stage, walked over to the bar at the side of the venue where the said chap was standing enjoying the set.
Dexter approached the bar next to the chap. Star-struck but playing it very cool the said chap cooly turned and asked Dexter what he was drinking?..... The drink ordered, Dexter thanked him, drank the Liquor, headed back to the stand, whilst the pianist was just concluding his solo, Dexter picked his horn up, clipped it in the neck support and hit the bridge of the tune, BANG!
All without missing a beat and totally silk smooth. DAMN!
love that yarn.

I recently discovered this guitarist, Eric Gales. He’s been around since ‘91, and has 15 albums! How I am just hearing about him reflects the industry, these really talented musicians are not getting the exposure they deserve, if they did they couldn’t sell the tripe they promote.

That's what I hate about the stream services...repackaged, renamed, same LPs. With horrid cheap covers. It's that thing they do to get around copyright or the 50 year old out of copyright thang.
NO! Not background music, at least in my house...right up Front!
It's got las vagas style Reminds me of such anyway.

I think he is in his 90s now, and health is not too good, but what a career and legacy.

Got a Big Bill Broonzy LP off Grant a while back and didn’t know what to expect as up till that point h wasn’t on my radar, actually it was stunning the 1930s recording quality (actually pretty good for that time) fades into the background as the man’s warmth and humanity (in the face of considerable adversity) shone through. Sometimes recording quality is NOT what it’s about at all.

Oscar Peterson..Night Train
Good one Grant! Night Train is one of the first jazz LPs we bought back in the day when first exploring jazz music.
Small side note: my wife had a young student in one of her high school science classes, whose father was studying under Oscar when he taught at York University in Toronto. The family had moved all the way from somewhere in the southern US so the dad could learn from the great Oscar. By all accounts he was a wonderful tutor.

Excellent album, Adam. I am a big fan of Henderson. He has an very forward, assertive style at times, and then plays the most sublime ballads. Great talent. If you haven't heard it, check out his Lush Life album, on which he plays the music of Billy Strayhorn. Also excellent, and one of my favourites.

Funny that you should post Hank Mobley today. I was just listening to his Dippin' album whilst cooking dinner tonight. Some fun stuff on there! Recado Bossa Nova had me dancing around on the deck and nearly made me burn the chicken on the grill.

Nice ecm business Edward
I personally Could never get on with Jan Garbarek. I must try again.
Although I’ve been trying to like him for many years. The amount of great ECM recordings I have turned off when he starts to ‘play’ his horn, I can’t begin to count.
IMHO he has a very grating tone. Marmite I suppose.
All the dogs in my street start to howl when he plays
I’ll get my coat !
Marmite? Marmite! I love Marmite and I love Jan Garbarek - have loads of his recordings.
I'll take him over Charles Lloyd any day!
Yes I can quite imagine Jan Garbarek is a Marmite type character. I first came across him when my brother-in-law gave me Officium back in the 90s. With the Hilliard Ensemble quite a different style to the one I linked to earlier. Fusion of classical early sacred with jazz. Needs a few plays to tune your ears.

As usual Grant, great selections, thanks for sharing buddy.
My gripe with the streaming services Is the repacking of albums for I suspect the
Copyright grey area, something to do with a 50 year rule I believe, but they duplicate the original albums
Use different artwork (in this case Johnny Griffin, who’s a bloody Tenor Saxophone player NOT a trumpeter as illustrated in the artwork) they also rename the album with another title although it’s the same content. I think it cheapens the whole streaming experience..
Anyway as always fantastic music Grant, just had to get my rant off my chest and the Johnny Griffin artwork showing a trumpeter just pushed me too far! :steam:

Grant...You are not getting away with that!!!
Please, listen to the track ‘Alabama’, (actually a studio recording as this was part studio part live set)
hear the aching beauty, the pain the anger and honesty in it.
It was written in response to the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing on September 15, 1963, an attack by the Ku Klux Klan in Birmingham, Alabama that killed four Afro American school girls.
Live at Birdland deserves more. I beg you give it some more of your time.. :donk:

and whilst we are on that tip, lets finish with a wonderful recorded live at Basin Street recorded in 1956.
One of the true essentials to listen to of this era.

A strange but very interesting and more to the fact, very good Album.
Dom Um Romao, Nana Vasconcelos, and Pakistan tabla master Badal Roy create the textures, Miroslav Vitous on bass
and Jon Hassell on Trumpet lead.
Very much worth a listen

Fun! Listening to it now on Spotify. Being a long-time Roxy Music and Ferry fan since their early days (I think I have at least 12 albums from both), I didn't know what to expect here. To hear their old hits interpreted like this is just great. The recording even sounds like it was done in the '30s. Good recommendation Grant!

Yes, that is very odd. Baffles me too. But then I am no jazz vocal fan at all. I find it all more of the sameness. Perhaps that's why Krall stands out for me -- she has such a unique style, unlike any other jazz singer I know of. She is really one of the only ones I actually listen to and that grab my attention...Emily-Claire Barlow being one of only other ones (what a voice!). I suspect that's why Krall may rub people the wrong way, in that she bucks convention and the "traditional" jazz vocal style. But then I'm no jazz scholar -- I just know what I like and what moves me. Others who are students of jazz may have an opinion on this.
Cheers,
Svend

Great album, which I love.
Davis had a habit of putting himself forward and receiving much of the glory. even pinched tunes written by others and claimed them for himself.
great musician. horrible human being.

Which particular Tunes do you refer to Brian?
Interesting session 'Something' Else', Miles was definitely at the front of this session and rightly so, he was at the top of his game in 58.
Miles talking in the session to RVG is also interesting.
Miles was obviously a very complicated character with issues. Horrible Human being...bit strong.
Genius who never stood still, oh yes.
I think he played his character to the hilt.
maybe thinking of Chuck Wayne's Sonny, being miraculously copied and turned into Solar, bar a single chord change.

Grant, yes solar was one I was thinking of.
Others are tune up, four, dig.
Many of the ideas for “kind of blue “were from bill Evans. In a particular, Evans had been playing around wi5h “blue in green “ for several years.
I’m just doing this fr9m memory, but I think this is corr3ct. Miles was well known to not sell himself short!!!!!
Watch some of the you tube clips of miles being interviewed. In my view he was horrible human being.

yes i've read about Solar too, i can imagine it was pretty common place back then. It don't make it right though
Sure there is or was plenty of it going on, sometimes innocently, sometimes maybe not. You hear a bit of music and its maybe not played again, not written down or recorded and several years later you write it and either think or convince yourself its yours.
Maybe should have shared the rights but, its maybe happened to him too.

With so much creative energy in the melting pot, it's inevitable.
A bit of a knob he may have been, but Miles was the man.
IMO it all went wrong when Miles wanted to earn 'big bucks'. His agent told him that to do that he would have to stop playing to small audiences and go after a younger audience. That is why he went electric, abandoned wearing suits and changed to wearing denim; and basically "get down with the kids".
The last recording Miles made that I like is 'Bitches Brew' - but with that I only really play one side: 'Miles Runs the Voodoo Down'.
I heard Miles Davis play in Amsterdam in 1982, and was impressed that, huge ego aside, Miles did not hog the limelight but let all of his fellow musicians have an opportunity to shine.

Dunno if it ever really went 'wrong' for Miles, changes of direction is what kept him fresh and alive. The electric period produced some stellar moments, and some
mundane 3 hour Jams! I can only handle bits and bobs, but he always brought along young exciting musicians with him. kind of what the Messengers band under Silver & Blakey did.
I agree, saw him in 1986 London, and he was very generous with letting others on stage shine.
Great show, not the music I wanted to hear from Miles, but even the Tutu lp had it's moments.
Obviously it didn't go wrong for Miles. I meant Miles went wrong for me: I simply disliked his change of direction and stopped listening. I actually fell asleep listening to 'Tutu'!
Agree with you about Art Blakely. Saw him a couple of times at Ronnie Scott's and just loved the infectious enthusiasm Blakely displayed with that great big grin on his face. :)
