I’m afraid to say..... this thread is about as good as it gets!!!
Music that is a delight, as is Gobor Szabo and all the new stuff that has been recommended.
A half decent system..... (different variations) which we all have ..... proves the point.
I can only say thank you all for the recommendations.

Satchmo plays King Oliver
I was put onto this at a recent visit to Tom's place (Montesquieu, of this parish), it sounded wonderful
So had to get a copy..
St James Infirmary is do die for! Seriously good recording to boot.

I'll check that one out. Should be interesting to see how the tracks played by Louis Armstrong compare with those played by King Oliver.
Charlie Hunter and Pound for Pound for me. A recent steer from a good buddy put me onto this guy and with an eight string axe he had to be worth a punt.

Well, Saturday 16th December 2017 and Sue and I have just had a jazz session from around three in the afternoon till half six. Played CD's by Diana Krall (Love Scenes), Cassandra Wilson (New Moon Daughter), Andy Shepherd (Learning to Wave) and Courtney Pine (Modern Jazz Stories). Listened to some in triode mode but then switched to ultralinear which Sue said she preferred. This was the first time we had listened to so much music in over a year. How things change and how settled we are currently in this new place. I love it when it is like this.

This is a great thread! Many thanks to all who contributed for introducing me to some artists I've never heard of. E.g. Ellen Andrea Wang...as I write this I'm listening to her Blank Out album on Spotify.
Here's one of my favourites:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/21/Lush_Life.jpg
Joe Henderson playing the music of Billy Strayhorn.
More faves to come...
Cheers,
Svend
Here's another of my long-time favourites:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e4/Branford_Marsalis_Trio_Jeepy_cover.jpg
Branford Marsalis with Milt Hinton and Jeff Tain Watts. Brilliantly played, very easy-going and fun mood, and outstanding sound quality (it's one of my reference recordings). Even on a mediocre system it sounds like they're in the room with you. And if you want to rattle your china cabinet with deep bass, this is a good one.
I think it won, or was at least nominated for, a Grammy.
Cheers,
Svend
PS -- this is a very accessible album by Marsalis, more traditional in style than some of his others. A wonderful intro to jazz for those just discovering the genre. Nothing esoteric or avant-garde here, just straight-ahead jazz that's a ton of fun to listen to.
In a more contemporary vein:

Sadly over Christmas we have to follow things in a rather military way due to family, driving early enough on Christmas morn and having to Facetime a sprog in a distant land.
Meantime I'm enjoying the Rudy van Gelder playlist in Tidal.

Hi Svend,
I wasn't very clear in my post, I have lots of Bill Evans ! Funnily enough the Village Vangaurd box set and KoB where the fist two jazz albums I acquired when discovering the joys of the genre.
ATB.
Ah, I see. Too funny...I assumed it was your first and only Evans album.
And two fantastic recordings to get your first taste of jazz. Well chosen.

I was in Tavistock a few weeks ago, with the good lady wife in a small charity shop.I was browsing a few LPs (usual suspects, all rubbish) when the little old lady running the place said she has some "new" old records in the back, there were 8 or 9 at 50p each. She was so pleasant I said I would have em all (I'm a Saint, I know )
Anyway one was "Aurora" by Jean Luc Ponty in good condition worth 10 quid to me as I love his music BUT there was also the real 2 subjects of my post
"Take this Hammer" by Leadbelly in pretty good nick Folkways Records USA, 1968 I think, a collection of much earlier recordings.I would call it "blues",not particularly my cup of tea, but hey,it is just brilliant.
I have played the heck out of it.
"Brownie n Sonny's Blues" by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee fair condition French "Roulette" records 1960. These two, both disabled, just gel and I have enjoyed this one too.
At 50p each a bit of a bargain and there are not many left !!
Happy New Year all.

Well done Dave. You are right, good clean titles from this genre are getting hard to find in charity shops. God I've done my share of digging and sifting through thousands of Max Bygraves dished LPs and the like, it can get one down.
Although I've had a few good scores over the years! It's the unknown that keeps one digging.
'Twas far more fruitful pre tinternet days.. in fact Oxfam have vinyl pickers that cherry pick the donations and list the cream on fleabay for the charity. I suppose that's a good thing for the cause but a bummer for the diggers..enjoy!

If you're a Branford Marsalis fan, this is well worth a listen:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4e/Mo%27_Better_Blues%3B_Movie_poster.jpg
He did the soundtrack to this movie. I'm normally not a big fan of jazz vocals, but the singer (Cynda Williams) on the Harlem Blues track is wonderful. What a voice! Terence Blanchard plays on this album as well.
Marsalis sure has explored a variety of jazz styles. Always interesting to see what he is up to.
Enjoy!

While not jazz, this is also by Branford Marsalis: Romances for Saxophone
http://www.branfordmarsalis.com/sites/default/files/styles/album_node/public/album/romances.jpg?itok=WVvYFZAx
He's playing with the English Chamber Orchestra and Tallis Chamber Choir, music by Faure, Satie, Rachmaninov, Ravel and others. A rare recording of a saxophone soloist playing with a classical orchestra. He really pulls it off. Ignore the schmaltzy album title and cover photo. This is good music, well played.
As far as I know, it was his only segue into classical, unlike his brother Wynton.

I still have that on vinyl , bought when it first came out. at the time I loved it, but put it on again recently and surprised myself by finding it too cheesy.
Actually, Branford plays a lot of classical sax these days. He does a lot of the classical repertoire. On alto, with full orchestra.
Does it very well, and he is a much better player than he was back then, but classical sax is not my thing these days.

Grant, thats a fantastic album. One if my favourites.
I see you were on C JAM BLUES, at the time. You may not have noticed this, but it is very interesting.
Although the band swing like mad all the way through. They speed up a huge amount. Listen to the tempo at the start, then quickly jump to the near the end.
Incredible, but who really cares, as the amount of swing makes you forget all about it.

Had a record cleaning session today, A pile of records, most of which I don't know where they came from. Amongst which was an EP of Vic Dickensen, really very good, so found him on Spotify to hear some more of his stuff.

Cool - and don't forget to turn the volume way up - you gotta 'feel' the music.
Good one Edward. I love Cuban jazz. We are fortunate to have a local musician, Jane Bunnett, who specializes in that style. I've been trying to see her live for years, but my timing never seems to work out. Thanks for the head's up Cachaito -- it's playing on Spotify now :)
Thanks Svend - I'll check out Jane Bunnett soon.
Edward, here's a good place to start:

Or this, for a mellower mood:

"Cachaíto" López is the nephew of the Great Cuban Bass Player Cachao López
Check out his LPs. He was widely regarded as the inventor of the Mambo rhythm.
He made some great Descarga (Jamm Session) Lps
Really Authentic and great SQ.
Another cracking Cuban player was the late "Angá" Díaz His LP 'Echu Mingua' on world Circuit records is a corker!!
Post script.. and to go full circle ..."Angá" Díaz's daughters are very talented also, they formed a duo called, Ibeyi., LPs are on Tidal etc.
Turn it up!
I discovered Cachaito via Roon's discover function which is based on my collections etc. I rather suspect it was picked up via a Tidal playlist you previously shared with me Adam. So thanks for that. :)
It's amazing discovering new music. About three years I was in Peru for a short time. Whilst I did not go to any music concerts I did overhear lots of Peruvian Jazz being played in cafes, restaurants etc. So a bit of googling turned up stars like Gabriel Alegria, Richie Zellon and Alex Acuna.

I'm aware of Alex Acuna, the others I will check out. Thanks Edward. I love joining the dots on the musical map.
I saw this chap at the North Sea Jazz Festival a few years ago, Edmar Castaneda who's a Colombian Jazz harpist, which sounds very shit...my god, he blew the place apart, played heavy 'bass' solos on the harp.
Check him out, some great footage out there on youtube also.

Just so much great music out there off the path.

Les McCann and Eddie Harris live at Montreux. The track Compared to What has a wonderful Motown feel to it. Great stuff.
