Spinning Slow Drag Blue Note Tone Poet for the first time this afternoon, and am pretty much in awe of the sonics. Apparently it was recorded at a time when Rudy had perfected his recording setup, so it may have had a head start, but the Tone Poet brings out an astonishing level of clarity and detail. I've streamed this at least a half dozen times over the last few months and haven't heard the nuances I'm hearing now...and almost didn’t go through with my order…Higgins' vocals pop on title track and his dampening kick drum is clearer than ever on "Jelly Roll" plus Cedar Wilson on “The Loner” really catches my ear ….Certainly glad I picked this one up

Today first up was

Tsuyoshi Yamamoto With The Strings - Star Dust , top drawer Japanese jazz with ‘strings’ .. my Discogs review follows

Simply stunning and engaging piano led trio with super accompanient of strings, the album kicks off with the title track "Star Dust" where the strings are very much in a supporting role while adding a lot, and in fact that is a constant with the album the Strings all arranged by Shoji Yokouchi support but never take over building from background to forming a prominence that ultimately makes a pedastal for Piano, bass or drums.
"La Vie En Rose" is a lovely enchanting track played with sensitivity and yet a sense of fun.
This track leads us to "Misty" Errol Garner's song to whom the album is dedicated, this version of misty is such a beautiful arrangement conveying every ounce of the emotion of the song, it is of course the track that made Tsuyoshi's name, here it is taken to a much higher place thanks to the strings.
"There Is No Greater Love" shows off in a rather understated way the piano playing of Mr Yamamoto with fabulous repeated notes echoing the violin playing.
The strings take center stage to start off "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" which is a delightful contrast in opening the track from hearing the Trio having played it without strings on another album and then we have
"She's Funny That Way" which is a new track to me and once again a sublime arrangement whereby the strings really compliment the Trio and piano.
"Blues For Erroll" is another super track this time the strings are arranged to hold back and only make an appearance when needed for emphasis or to build a bridge between parts of the song, which builds in a lovely soft way throughout.
The final track is "Time After Time"this has a deep sadness expressed in the emotion of te arrangement almost perfectly conveying the feeling of the end of a wonderful affair that then brightens up towards the end almost as if emotionally looking forward to life in the future and joys to come.

The studio is dark; voices can be heard approaching its main doors. Soon, a flick of a switch brings light, which reveals a white walled room full of musical instruments of every shape and size, glistening under the rays thrust upon them, all fighting for space with a plethora of recording equipment already set up. The voices heard earlier, now file in through the doors. The room falls silent as a piano lid is lifted to reveal black and white keys that stare back at the man now carefully placing his long fingers upon them. Ok chaps he says, shall we give the first number a run through? The arranger had arrived, the process had begun... Harry South may not be a household name in the UK, but among its jazz world of the 50s to the late 60s, it was held in very high esteem. Even when jazz fell into a sharp decline in the UK mainstream in the late 1960s, you couldn t hold a man like Harry South back. By then, mainly writing for film, theatre and TV, he composed perhaps one of the most iconic television themes of all time The Sweeney.

This set contains over 60 tracks all written by Harry, the majority of them from the decade 1956-1966 when British jazz was at its peak and ranges through soul jazz, bebop, Latin stylings and funky 60s big band sounds. The Harry South family have kindly
allowed us to access their archives and most of the tracks are receiving their first release. “Sure, you can learn a lot listening to other people on record but Harry taught me more than I ever got from records” Tubby Hayes said in 1957

With respect to Wyndham Hill you should try Michael Hedges - Aerial Boundaries, a highly talented and accomplished guitarist who created several new techniques, amazing. Sadly he died young in a car crash, just as he was becoming famous.

I bumped into her at a gas station a few years back, just down the street from our (former) house. I didn’t know who she was…. …but that car! It wasn’t until after I happened to get her album on recommendation and saw an online article (linked below) about her and that car that I put two and two together. Life is funny… I was used to running into musicians and such in NYC and Nashville but some little home town…. not so much.

Romanitc Warrior absolutely ruined me while I was still in my single digits. In many ways, I have never recovered and likely never will. Though I never stopped listening to other music, for quite a long time afterwards I held a good chunk of contempt and disdain for "lesser" musicians/"lesser" composers (especially outside of the jazz and classical arenas). The prowess of the musicianship along with the compositional aspect of, in particular, Chick's pieces just wiped the floor with so many who were praised in the music media, routinely. Typical r&b, rock, pop and funk of the day (which I was also into)... forget about it. Lesson learned and retained.

As I grew, I realized not all musicians/composers/songwriters aspire to the same goals and it's perfectly okay, even imperative to "do what you do" (a music library of only Return to Forever and the Elektric Band "I" and II would be sad, very sad, nor did the art of electric fusion guitar stop with Al DiMeola (not by a long stretch)... George Clinton is just as relevant as George Russell. Wayne Newtown is just as relevant as Wayne Krantz. Gil Scott-Heron is just as relevant as Gil Evans and so on it goes.

But, dayyum... in 1976... RTF set the "jazz fusion bar" so high they (in my opinion) had no where to go for their next one Musicmagic... and it showed, despite liking that album for different reasons. Similarly, albums like Birds of Fire, Thrust, Enigmatic Ocean and Black Market all had me wondering for a while why anyone gave a **** about Sonny and Cher! (Full disclosure: I own several Sonny and Cher albums, now.)

...just my two cents off the top of my head... No offense intended to anyone.

True, it obviously does sound that way to some/many.

Outside of Strauss' Waltzes, The Messiah, Nutcracker, 1812 and William Tell Overtures and other such "over-played?" familiarities, I guess the same could be said of the loose category commonly referred to as "classical" (though they don't know it, many who grew up on TV cartoons and such in the 60's thru 80's have heard far more "classical" and "jazz" than they realize). I get it, though. If my first experiences were with Coltrane's Om or some of Britten's works, I'm not sure I would have had the fortitude to go deep. Glad I did, though.

Thrust is all funk and all jazz all at the same time. LOL. Masterful. I close my eyes and get lost in that one.

While I would say Herbie was informed by classical composition, it seems to me that Chick (and, say, Wynton) made a purposeful study of it in order to play it. I liken it to the difference between Deep Purple with an orchestra and what Yngwie Malmsteen did with his Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra.

Interesting to note, I believe it was Lenny White and/or Stanley Clarke who balked at the term "jazz sellout" when questioned in an interview. He mentioned that like everybody else when they went home they were also listening to the same "pop" and "rock" and "r&b" music that everyone else was listening to so why should they not either incorporate or play some of that music outright, as well. They're musicians. That's what they do.

Sorry for being so wordy. I'm rounding out my stay-cation. Soon it's back to the IT crap that pays the bills.

One of my all time faves. Al Green - The Belle Album. I heard of this LP through 'The Wire' magazine that I used to read back in the 90s, it was in the '100 best underated records' list, and apparently it's a lofi affair, recordings wise, not that I would have noticed, I just like the tunes. Mine is a UK issue, on the PYE label, not sure about the Cream part of the label, as this was a Hi records release in the US.

Well, from what I understand 'piccolo' bass to be, (I had to look it up :o) I would say yes. A lot. The album covers a variety of styles, none of which include much in the way of tunes, or lyrics, but does as usual showcase his huge talent. I would say it might take two or three listens to come to like it, though the musicianship and startling production quality will grab you from the start.

If you're familiar with and like Clarke's other albums then this would be a worthy addition. But the more accessible "School Days" it is not.

Herculean effort to play as "poorly" as he did, if that is one's view. We could say the same of Trane if we had only heard Interstellar Space and Om and never Giant Steps and Lush Life, I suppose

I still have not purchased any of Ayler's records. I do have friends who have stretched their musical appreciation that far... ...gimme a few years, maybe.

I only gave in because it was priced at almost nothing and a NM WLP, at that (while a badly warp damaged Scorpions Live was priced at $25!!!) Someone had a sense of humor.

I was wrong. I was very wrong. This could have easily been a CTI release and no one would have batted an eye. "In the Beginning" (or it's 2LP counterpart "Then There Was Light, Vols. 1 & 2") it is not. However, it fits in just fine with, say... Bob James' H and similar.

I always thought his self-titled album was a hard act to follow. Bill Connors goes scorched earth (as the kids say) as he did on RTF's Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy.

Easy listening was a bit of a cult thing in the UK back in the 90s, there was a spate of compilation albums, a lot of Italian film music and the like. Bob james 'One' seems to be the sort after LP by him, with one track sampled by 90s Hiphop outfit Wutang Clan.

If they are early originals and in VG+ condition or above then they are around £200 each, you should consider buying these excellent re-releases selling your originals, unless you want these for sentimental reasons, and then buying more records.:D
