Theresa May admonishing Sir Christopher Chope on his 'no' vote:

"Really Christopher, you've let the side down, I don't know what you were thinking. If this government is to survive, we need to show a united front on important issues such as this. And it's no good just staring at the floor, look at me when I'm talking to you! Wait a minute, I've a text message coming through, it just says 'carpets and curtains', what on earth does that mean?"

That ginger tosser Chris Evans is back on R2 this morning after a couple of days away, having lost his voice. I'd like to meet the person who found it for him and slap him about the head a bit.

Just when I was getting used to hearing songs in their entirety, uninterrupted. :(

I've never bought a chair, couch or stool of any description ever in my life. And I've only bought any type of drinking receptacle once. 6 French Crystal glasses that were on knock down in TK Max and were going to be an Xmas present for someone but I decided to keep them. I've broken two of them now.

I've never bought a plate of any type, either. I've bought cutlery only once but I lost all the forks. A girl at work had loads and brought me in two replacements so that was sorted.

What's the point in spending money on a thing when you can get a perfectly good one for nothing? The depreciation on new furniture is cataclysmic. Makes doing something nuts like buying a big Peugeot look like a sound financial move by comparison.

Don't get me wrong if cash was no object I'd have the place tricked out very finely. Or a better place, tricked out very finely. But if you want a champagne lifestyle on a beer budget you have to target your spending and scrimp elsewhere.

It's amazing what well-off people are skipping. I have a friend, her mother gets a new suite of furniture every 2 years. Another one, the mother in law had the whole place done out Laura Ashley, ten grand, goes off it after a year, just wants rid. Dining table that cost 3 grand, 'Just take it away I've got a new one arriving tomorrow and I need the room'.

Probably been used about 5 times. Some of the chairs have never been sat in.

More like wastful idiots with no class, who probably are still paying for it on credit!

We buy good stuff that lasts, such as (since you've mentioned it) the Laura Ashley furniture and curtains we have in the lounge, and if we ever decide to change the look of the sofa or chairs, we'll simply have them recovered in a different fabric! Nothing is ever skipped unless it's purely rubbish; it either gets recycled or goes to a charity shop.

One of the things you pay for in Laura Ashley furniture [or with other good makes] is the quality of the carcass, which is why you can get a 3-piece suite from DFS for £500, as it's shit, through and through and not designed to last. Fine, however, for superficial-minded 'trending' types, who change their sofas more often than their underpants...

I doubt we'll buy another new suite of furniture again in our lifetime, as this stuff will probably outlive us! You'll find that the truly "well off" are rather more thrifty than the kind of vulgar fashion victims/wannabe toffs you're talking about;)

When I was in construction, I worked at a few country clubs. And I learned there are two types, the ones who are actually rich, and those who want you to think they are rich!

Those who are actually rich, they are rather nice people, who don’t mind paying you for fixing things, and treat you with some common decency.

Those who want you to think they are Rich, they are snobs, who treat you like the help and are rude and self righteous. And expect everyone to do them something for free.

You are so right Russell, this has been my experience too.

The 'really rich' have nothing to prove, whereas the 'nearly rich' are often truly awful to be around. They aspire to be rich, and looking down on the rest of us is an inexpensive way of elevating their financial status.

I have one customer in his late fifties, who sold his engineering firm a few years ago and he and his partner walked away with about £60 million each. But each morning he came out to greet us, make us a brew and have a quick chat before taking his dog out.

And earlier this year we fitted a kitchen for someone who lives in an apartment in Lytham. We were told that the old kitchen cannot be stacked outside ready for removal, but must go straight in the van. It seems that no one wants anyone to see the state of the old kitchen, lest they be judged. Also a previous workman accidentally left a handsaw leaning on one of the big planters in the gardens, and it was brought up at the next residents' association meeting!

Russell, you've probably never seen an old 70's sitcom called 'The Good Life', what with being in America, but there is a character called Margot Leadbeater who personifies this perfectly.

I just give these people a wide berth.

Nothing wrong with aspirations, but comparing yourself to others looks like a certain path to misery.

Spot on, Russell. It's usually why in the houses of the aristocracy, the staff are very well treated and don't have a bad word to say about their employers. There's nothing worse than snobby 'aspirational' types, trying to be something they're not, nor ever will be.

In that respect, there are also marked differences in behaviour between 'old money' types and the nouveau riche.

Exactly so, which is why they don't have to project an image. Essentially, they're comfortable 'in their own skin', whereas the wannabes aren't; they constantly need to 'prove' to others that they're rich. Quite simply, if you have to try that hard to LOOK rich, then you aren't, or indeed anything even approaching it;)

Indeed. We always make a point of looking after any tradesman who call. Not least because they tend to do a better job that way (!) but because it's simple manners. When the Virgin guys called recently to install our new broadband and TV services, I made them all cappuccinos and gave them some really nice chocolate biscuits, which they appreciated. They said the coffee was better than they get at Costa!

It's just nice to be nice, and if you were brought up properly, you don't look down upon anyone who may be considered as your 'inferior'; you respect them as human beings, and after all, everyone has a job to do. The fact is, the country would soon grind to a halt if there were no bin men, regardless of what the 'suits' were doing in their offices!

And earlier this year we fitted a kitchen for someone who lives in an apartment in Lytham. Lol, that's hilarious, and also totally pathetic. I've known folk like that; busybodies with nothing else better to do with themselves. They're just saddos desperately trying to conceal their deep-rooted inadequacies. A bit like the effects of 'small man syndrome'...:eyebrows:

Oh, and I'd rather die than live anywhere where there exists such meetings!

Nothing wrong with aspirations, but comparing yourself to others looks like a certain path to misery.

Absolutely. There's nothing wrong with having aspirations, in moderation, as long as they're realistic and it doesn't take over your life.

The problem these days is folk want WAY too much (material possessions) because they think they're 'entitled' to it, whether they can actually afford it or not. Unfortunately, we live in a very materialistic, image obsessed society - and it's getting worse all the time, especially now with social media. It's the old 'keeping up with the Joneses' gone crazy...

Gone are the days when folk were happier with simpler lives - and I'd contend that true happiness now is a rare and somewhat precious commodity, as it's been eroded by the stress of having to 'live up to expectations' and the demands of modern life. That's one of the reasons why I divorce myself from that pish as much as possible!

Learn to be happy in your own skin, and be grateful for what you've got, not jealous of what others may appear to have more of than you. is my motto.

Marco.

I bought a set of crockery at Woolworths when I moved to a bedsit in That London. Forty years later, all that remains is one dinner plate, and all four bowls (though one is badly chipped). I bought a set of cutlery round the same time; still have all four knives and forks, but two dessert spoons have gone. Obviously crockery goes more quickly than cutlery with small children around.

We were in the same position, until we completely redesigned the kitchen and fitted all new appliances.

The 50-year old electric cooker we had (of which only 3 of the 4 rings worked), the seal on the oven door on which had long gone, so the door had to be propped up and kept closed with something heavy, for the oven to work, was of a non-standard size, and so one simply couldn't just replace the cooker with a modern one - a new kitchen was needed to facilitate the installation of a new cooker!:D

So we ripped the whole lot out and started again, as it was badly needing done, and because of the above and the cost involved in doing it right, the way we wanted, something we'd put off doing for years. The job was problematic and took a long time to get right, plus the mess and upheaval was HORRENDOUS, but sitting back now in our beautiful new kitchen (which you've seen), and the pleasure and sense of satisfaction that gives us everyday, has made it all worthwhile!!:)

Sometimes, you've just got to bite the bullet and get stuff done, which BADLY needs doing, and take two steps back before taking four steps forward, as otherwise you can end up just living in the land that time forgot, in an environment that you know is shabby and far from pleasant, and gets you down just looking at it. Even if you don't realise it, that's not good for your head....

At least you've got Happy to consider now, so I'm sure she'll 'refocus your priorities' and drag you kicking and screaming into the 21st century!:D

She made a good point when she was here with you recently, in that you can't take your money with you, so enjoy it while you still can, and spend some, as life's too short... Being stubbornly anachronistic, or a tight-wad, just for the sake of it, really isn't cool.

I guarantee if you show her this post, she'll nod vehemently in agreement!;)

Marco.

P.S Oh, and sell that old rust-bucket you've got, posing as a car, and get yourself a nice Jaguar. It'll be much more 'you', and plus you deserve it :exactly:

Allow me to derail this thread too!

I just woke from the strangest dream! And thought I’d better write it down before I forget it.

A small meteor struck the Earth up in Northern Canada, near the North Pole. So, several scientists went up to take a look at it. It sat in a crater and was still whole, about 3 meters long, and 2 wide. Whatever it was made of was extremely heavy! And it was sinking into the earth. These scientists, two from Canada, two from America, and two from Russia, closely inspected it before it sunk out of sight. And later realized it had given them super powers! Such as telepathy, mind reading, seeing into the future, etc.

That’s when I woke up. Too bad really, I’d like to have seen how it ends? Maybe tomorrow night?

Yes, I'm still using my gas cooker which is also forty years old.

Not a great strategy ....

A while ago we redid our kitchen and replaced the ageing gas cooker (also about 40 years old then) The previous owner was not short of cash and the cooker was (in its time) clearly of good manufacture.
The gas fitter who came to fit the new one showed us the state of the supply hose at the back of the old one - perished and cracking and, as he put it, 'a ticking time bomb'

Gas is the one thing in the house I absolutely won't take risks with; two houses in our neighbourhood have had gas explosions due to old equipment in the last ten years.

When my parents' gas supply was changed from town gas to natural gas the gas fitter told them the sorry tale of a bloke who tried to gas himself using natural gas, which isn't toxic. He was so pleased at having survived, he lit a cigarette to celebrate. BOOM!

Natural gas is also odourless. The smell is added to help detect leaks. I suppose everyone knows this though.

When I was an apprentice at a printing works, one of my tasks was to light the boiler in the cellar in winter. I would get it started by putting discarded rags in with some wood, and then douse it all in paraffin from a fairy liquid bottle before sticking my head in there with a lit match.

One morning I mistakenly used petrol. This resulted in a ball of flame engulfing my head, and the secretary came rushing down the cellar steps because she felt the boom through the floor.

All my boss said was "Could you not smell the petrol you dozy bugger?"

No lasting damage. Although my eyebrows took weeks to grow back.

My father used to tell me stories about when he was an apprentice back in the 1930s. New blokes were always sent to the stores with requests for 'a left-handed screwdriver', 'a tin of tartan paint' and 'a long weight'. Another trick was to nail someone's lunch box to the workbench (probably not as painful as it sounds).

Thanks for that! I used to have some very complete dreams that were like watching a movie! It’s been a long time, and thought the plot of this one was worth repeating. It really does sound like the start of one of these recent super hero movies. Steven King’s books all started as a dream of his. He took his affliction of having nightmares and turned it into a fortune! I should have studied literature.

Once I was in a bar, and this old gal was hitting on me, by giving me a palm reading and telling my fortune. She asked if I had any strange dreams lately, so I told her one, and she stood up, and walked away! Never saying a word. I’m not sure what that means?

I worked with a woman once who was into Tarot cards, astrology and all that bollocks. She told me she could instantly tell what someone's star sign was. After three incorrect guesses at mine, I said, 'OK, thats enough guesses. I'm Aries'. She refused to believe me, and I had to show her my birth certificate to shut her up. Finally, she freaked out someone in the office by reading her Tarot cards, but refusing to say what the cards foretold, saying 'It's better that you don't know, really'. Gas is dangerous, but I really enjoy cooking on a gas range. In fact, most chefs use gas ranges in their profession. I am forever burning things on an electric range. Mom has a glass top stove, and I can’t seem to cook anything on it. But my last home had a fine gas range! With the broiler, warming closet, and a griddle in the center on top! I could cook like a mad on that old range, probably 35 years old. Loved it! Hated to leave it when I moved.

It was decided that she should be 'encouraged to seek other opportunities'.

And many of these people truly believe they have “powers”, it’s all good fun for a laugh, but when you start taking it too seriously, not good.

They had a psychic on a local radio station years back, the guy was actually good! But someone called in and wanted to know what would happen in the future, and they guy said, “you’ll be dead in 4 months”. The air went dead! And when they came back he was gone, never to return.

Thanks for that! I used to have some very complete dreams that were like watching a movie!

I used to be able to consciously steer dreams in directions whilst asleep. I could also wake up and then go back to sleep and rejoin the dream I'd been having. I had tremendous mental control back then and could also control my heartbeat rate. Steering through the random action of the subconscious is another neat trick. I can still do that one occasionally, but not the others anymore.

...the gas fitter told them the sorry tale of a bloke who tried to gas himself using natural gas, which isn't toxic. He was so pleased at having survived, he lit a cigarette to celebrate. BOOM!

I love those kind of stories -
bit like the one about the guy who was dreaming about the French Revolution; he was a noble lord and was brought to the guillotine by the rabble ... he was pushed into position with his head on the block and he heard the sound of the blade hurtling down towards him. At that moment his wife tickled his neck to wake him and the shock brought on a massive and instantly fatal heart attack.

That’s rather amazing! Some dreams I’m in then, and others, I’m only watching it. The one last night I was only watching, I was not a character in the dream at all. But I can’t say I’ve ever been conscious enough to steer it. Although, I have gone back to sleep and picked up where it left off. And one dream, I was up about 30 minutes, and went back to sleep, and picked up in the dream 30 minutes later, like it had kept going while I was awake?

On a different note, when I was in college, the math professor posted an equation on the board, and said that anyone who could solve it would get an extra 100 averaged in with his test scores. So, the sharper students in class all wanted to solve it. He warned that no one had solved it in over 5 years. So I worked on it at home, and didn’t get anywhere with it, until one night, in a dream, I could see the answer written in chalk on a chalkboard. We used white boards in school, not that it matters. So I jumped up and wrote it down. The next day I looked at it, and wondered if it was correct? It took me 3 days to reverse engineer it to show my work from the original equation, and when I presented it to the professor he couldn’t believe it! Accused me of cheating, of having a mathematician help me. I assured him I didn’t know any such person. But it was correct. People say I had it figured out but didn’t know it, but honest I was no where near solving that problem, not even close! So where did it come from? Hard to say.

Someone was arguing with me on a YouTube video comment section about physics. He commented, “Just look at all the advancements in String Theory!”. What advancements? String Theory will probably never be proven, even those who came up with it have said so. The computer simulation theory is equally plausible. And equally provable. God has a few secrets left!

Over the years I've had a sort of recurring nightmare. The dream itself may vary, but always includes someone tickling my sides (like people used to do to you when you were a kid, but in these dreams the feeling is deeply unpleasant).

One night I woke from such a dream to find my missus tickling me in that same way. I shouted "It was you all along!" and banged my fist on the top of her head. She burst into tears, crying "You're not right in the head!" before storming out of the bedroom. It was at this point I properly woke up to find the missus sound asleep next to me.

Sometimes I can navigate through my dreams. I can look at something unfolding, and know that something bad is going to happen, and move to something else.

I also frequently move around between places in my home town, and all these places are familiar to me. But the town only exists in my dreams and in no way resembles anywhere I know during waking hours.

Some people think they never dream, but they do. They just don't remember them.

.

The old 'false awakening' as used in many a horror film over the years. Like in American Werewolf where he's in the hospital with Jenny Agutter at the height of her powers.

I used to have a recurring dream up until a couple of years ago. I'm back at school in the sixth form with all my old mates, doing whatever we did. At some point in the dream I start to think that it feels like I've been in the sixth form for years and something isn't right.

Then I remember that I finished sixth form, went on to University, finished that and now it is decades later. And then I wake up.

Over the years the point at which I realise it is a dream got earlier and earlier, so maybe that is why I don't have it any more?

I have that with work dreams. Even in the dream I'm thinking 'I retired five years ago, so WTF?', Sometimes someone says 'You're working for nothing, why would you do that?' and I get really cross; other times I'm still being paid. Never dream about school, and never have done as far as I can remember.

Ok, here goes.....
I had this dream 23 times in a row! I mean to say, 23 consecutive nights, the exact same dream, never changing, when I was only 17 years old. It started out that I only dreamed part of the way, and I woke, so the next night I’d get father along, and this continued until I had seen the whole thing.

I was in a large graveyard, in front of an old church, exactly like one in Petersburg VA. A really old cemetery with tombstones several hundred years old. Very old for the states. Anyway, near the front was a large stone about 2.5 meters square, and supported above it was a matching stone that was 2 meters thick that fit perfectly down on the slab below it. I was tied spread eagle on the lower stone, with a cloth diapered on me. The upper stone had some Latin writing on it, I’ve no idea what it said. All through the cemetery were these long curving roads, and along each road came a group of monks. With a priest wearing what looked like Catholic attire in the front, swinging an incense burner on a. Staff, and all those behind him were in plain white robes, hoods over their heads. About 4 of these processions made their way to where I was. The guy with the biggest hat said some words in Latin, and the others pulled the switch, and the large stone over my head fell, and squashed me flat! You’d think this would have been alarming! But instead I felt a calmness, almost a release. It squashed me perfectly so there was a bead of blood all the way around the stone, no drips. The 4 columns of men in white all passed by the stone on each side, and wiping a dab of blood on the him of their robe as they passed. When they were all done, they all went away in single file, the way they came, and the sun set as they disappeared over the hill.

Once I had seen the ending, I’ve never had the dream again. But some near 40 years later, I can remember every moment of it. It puzzled me for a long time as to why? I’ve got my ideas, but who the hell knows?

I would normally agree, most dreams are just stray thoughts randomly stitched together. And a reoccurring dream could be caused by something troubling you. But 23 consecutive nights in a row, proves higher than coincidence. Plus, the fact that it never varied, always the same, is also rather unusual. If it did in fact, “mean anything”, I’ll be damned if I know what. If someone from the other side was trying to send me a message, they did a piss poor job of it, as no one can figure it out.

But, it’s still far more interesting than dreaming you’re in school with no pants on. I personally enjoy hearing someone’s truly bizarre dreams. As I pointed out earlier, Steven King made a fortune relaying his dreams.

I’ve read, and have noticed it myself, that your brain doesn’t dedicate much if any memory to dreams. Many times when you wake you’ll remember a dream you just woke from, but an hour later you can’t recall any of it, you may recall waking from a dream, but the details have faded, it was in your short term memory, but was not kept in long term memory. Only dreams that have some impact, that really scare you or seem very real or something, will cause you to want to remember it. They say everyone dreams, most every night, but if the dreams stop 15 or 30 minutes before you wake, they are long forgotten. I read this in a book a girl loaned me about dreaming, about the technical side of it. It seems there are scientist and doctors who spend a lot of time and money researching dreams, and trying to figure out why we dream at all. And what purpose they serve. They claim they are essential to a healthy mind, sleep depravation can drive you mad! And it’s the lack of dreaming that causes it. But they don’t know why, really. I suppose running a kitchen would become a disaster if you never took out the trash?

I recall dreams from my childhood. Mainly the scary ones.

Dreams are the subconscious mind (which has a degree of consciousness) trolling (or scrolling) through the memory archives of experience and sensations in an associative but random manner. So in theory, dreams can be about just about anything.

The brain just doesn't have the capacity to remember everything you experience each and every day. Dreaming is becoming aware of the brain sifting through all the day's information and moving it from the short-term memory into the long-term memory; discarding unimportant trivia as it does so. That is why dreams, if remebered can seem so wierd, but if you can remember then you can usually work out where the component parts came from.

Sounds about right. Except for the “usually”, part, as noted on some of the dreams I’ve relayed here, I have no idea where that stuff came from. Even after pondering them for 30 years and still no idea.

But some dreams are easy to figure out. My Dad is always dreaming he finds money. Or gold, or gets rich, that’s pretty easy to figure out. My Grandfather used to have a reoccurring dream the devil was trying to pull him through a knothole in the floor! So yes, I guess you’re right.

This morning a friend told me he was taking the missus to Blackpool for the day and staying overnight.

"I've been and bought this kite which we're going to fly on the beach, and we've got half price tickets to get into Sandcastle".

"Oh, the kids will love that, especially Sandcastle".

"The kids aren't coming, my mum and dad are taking them somewhere".

Then tonight he is taking Kaz (his missus) to a club - she still likes a good rave at the grand old age of 32. I wish them the best of luck with that, there are some strange people come out of the woodwork at night in Blackpool (apologies if you live there). I have a feeling their night will end with a fight, as my mate doesn't take any nonsense, and he'll find plenty of nonsense there.

I love Blackpool, me - where else in the world can you be the victim of a drive-by paintball shooting by someone wearing a 'Kiss-me-quick' hat? That was truly surreal.

If you divide the number of people who want to slap Kanye West by the number of people who like James Corden you will always arrive at a really big number.

Cracking, I'd give him a good slapping.

Only today - Your age + year of birth

The total will be 2018. This happens only every 1000 years.

For an example if your age is 39 years and birth is 1978
39+1978=2018

Try, every one.

Doesn't work for me:

68 + 1949 = 2017.

Corden is infinitely worse than West. Can't even abide having him on the screen. My uncle was the same with Terry Wogan although that problems been solved for him now.

Pigmy Pony
03-07-2018, 18:20
When Wogan was talking to the camera he had this habit of rocking from side to side, and the camera had to pan accordingly to keep him in shot.

If I'd been the cameraman I'd have kept the camera still, so he would keep disappearing off the screen. He'd soon sort himself out. Or perhaps they would sack me, especially if I said "It's him or me".

Russell Harty was the one I could never figure out. He came from nowhere, it seemed, to having his own prime-time interview programme. Not that he seemed to enjoy it much. He had some annoying verbal tics, too. 'You did, did you not ...?', or 'You have, have you not?'

Still, even Harty and Wogan combined singing The Floral Dance would be less annoying than James sodding Corden. A spot of National Service would do him good.

And, I'd told the seller how vulnerable to damage turntables are and how to pack it safely. Of course he said it wasn't his fault and that I would have to claim from the courier. Bollocks did I! The anti-poaching team should gather up the teeth and bones, make them into costume jewellery and sell them on ebay. I'd happily bid on a chess set made of poacher bones. And if they don't have the stomach for this, sack them and buy more lions, that's what I say.

Macca
06-07-2018, 19:11
I like your thinking. Put a bounty on the poachers.

I suppose you have to get around the problem that if you do that some people will just whack anyone and claim they were poaching. I'd be considering it for one.

Pigmy Pony
06-07-2018, 19:51
Yes the bones would have to come with a certificate of authentication (is that a word?) and maybe stamped with a lion symbol, like they do with eggs.

The only people with any right to be in the game reserves are the staff, the anti-poaching dudes and the safari tourists (we're easy to spot, we all look like Stewart Granger). People carrying signs saying "I am not a poacher" should be regarded with suspicion. Anybody else = lion food.

Macca
06-07-2018, 20:01
Well you can't ever have enough lions, that's been known since ancient times. Why not build a double perimeter around the reserve and pack the interior with lions? A couple of gates to get in and out, Gurkhas with AK47s manning them.

The lion perimeter will be self-sustaining with poacher-meat mostly, you might have to herd a bunch of giraffes or whatever in there from time to time just to top up the food supply, granted. But that's problem solved, really.

Pigmy Pony
06-07-2018, 21:08
With enough television coverage, the lions could quickly gain celebrity status. Then they could "take the show on the road". The tour could take in the worst of our council estates. That show alone would be worth the licence fee.

And there'd be spin-off Channel 5 programmes like "22 kids and the lions ate nine of them" :)

Macca

Could be good. May I suggest we use politicians. That should prove a real draw.

Could end badly for the lions. Firstly they would be confronted by a protective cordon of heavily armed bodyguards while the politicians make good their escape. Next, the lions would develop mysterious illnesses which will turn out to be caused by some nerve agent with an unpronounceable name. The Russians would be blamed for this, and they would retaliate by bringing bears to the party. Could get messy.

And even if the lions were victorious I'm not sure whether they would care for the taste. I'd imagine politicians would taste pretty bad, being that full of shit. May have to use them in a spin-off show, something a bit more 'sharky'.

The poachers and the hoodies would yield much leaner meat, due to all the running from the police.

On the subject of inappropriate dress, I'll tell you about an unfortunate incident while on holiday last year. I wanted to go for a paddle, but I have to use the kiddies pool, as I'm not allowed in the grown-ups pool. :(

Anyway, she only put my thong on back to front, scared the bejaysus out of the poor kiddies and I ended up being arrested. The hotel manager said they don't want my kind staying there, lowering the tone of the place. It was a 2 star hotel in Benidorm. I really would rather forget about it, but I had to write about it in my journal (my therapist said I should keep a journal). Every time I pick it up it always opens at that page - I think Mrs. P is showing it to all her friends.

Anyway, it's Blackpool for us this year, I could wear a soiled nappy on my head there, and no one would bat an eyelid.

To paraphrase Monty Python: "This thread is getting silly - and now for something completely different" -

Today I went to pick up my GF's laptop which supposedly had had its screen replaced. I was told it would take about a week to get the replacement screen, so I phoned last Friday to find how things were progressing. Yes the screen had arrived and was being fitted to the laptop as I spoke - it would be ready for collection later that day. Couldn't pick it up Friday, so I told them I would come in today (Monday).

Went in today only to find that the laptop had not been repaired! The excuse was the wrong part had been supplied, but the correct one had just been delivered, and if I would come back in half an hour it would be ready. As it is not my machine I informed my GF of the news. She said she wanted a good job done and not a rushed one, so I went back to tell them to take their time and I would pick it up next Monday. I had only been out of the shop for no more than ten minutes, but when I returned the screen had been installed.

I paid £85 for the work, which I believe is not atypical. However I suspect the replacement screens are probably no more than say £40, so £45 for five minutes work makes me think I was in the wrong occupation.

Seriously, if you get a spare half hour or so, give "Our Guy in Russia" a watch, on All 4. Also has Putin riding with Russian Hell's Angels, and Guy Martin taking the controls in a Russian jet. Really interesting stuff.

My soldering skills (such as they are) were on a big high up until last night. I repaired the micro usb port on my Pure Highway in car DAB , and promptly seemed to kill the charge lead and the Highway !! :mental: (I had used the multimeter loads of times to try and make sure the pos and neg were right way round ) The Highway will power up with batteries usually (which it had done when I suspected the usb plug was goosed ) but after my balls up with charge lead ,which appeared to die ,as the red led went out completely althought the fuse was good !
But after this event , batteries (and new ones ) would not get her to come on !!! :(
So I put it away , felt sad , especially when a new one is near £100:rolleyes:

This afternoon , took the back off it ,generally blew the dust out and tweaked here and there then put batteries back in for a larf

Whey hey , up she fired !!! Very odd !!
I have spent £16 on a new charge lead from Pure - Fingers crossed :)

Oh , and the Aiwa TT has a tonearm wiring issue , that comes and goes - Bah !!

This last few months there have only been three living at our house - myself, Anita and Alice (the cat). The ankle biters have all moved out. Great!

Well almost. The problem we have is that we are planning to go on holiday for a week in Sept, and there will be no one living here to care for the cat. Options are either one of the kids drops by a couple of times each day to feed her, or put her in a cattery. Anita thinks it would be a bit cruel for her to be alone for hours on end, and I'm inclined to agree. But having her put in a big cage for a week seems barely any better.

I've asked her what she would prefer, but she just looks at me blankly before going back to licking her arse.

There must be others on here who have cats and holidays, what do you think would be the better option for her?

You may gather from this post that it's been a quiet week newswise. and I'm tired of looking at Brexit bickering. :(

If she is used to her freedom and such then she can be let out and I n. Fed and watered. I did it with mine for a week a couple of times. She wasn't best chuffed with me mind but it's better than a cattery. Neighbor did the looking in etc

Perhaps that would be the best way. When the weather's good she spends most of the daytime playing out and only comes in at mealtimes and (reluctantly) when it's going dark. Plus she'll see a familiar face a couple of times a day.

Today , I decided to make a cheeky offer for a turntable for spares .
It had been kicking about on the bay for weeks and I was interested (a bit)
Messaged the seller , would he take an offer . He would !!!!
So , asked a few questions ,did the strobe work ,was it a good constant speed , and he said yes .
Few more questions then I offered the asking price less the postage.

Went for a shower and came to check my e mails . Had a review offer of the amount I had asked it for !!

Clicked on link and it had gone - expired , 7 mins earlier :doh::doh::doh:

Dont bugger about in the shower - is the moral of the story , (although I had fully expected him to agree then post it as a buy it now ,with me hovering over the buy button !!)

Just had an ‘invitation’ to renew my car insurance, only to find the premium has been increased by more than 20% over last year, for exactly the same cover.

I’ve been with the same company for eight years and for the first few years the premium actually decreased year on year. Then it suddenly increased by 25%, so I phoned them up to enquire why and was give some sob story about ‘ambulance chasers’. When I commented I could get the same amount of cover from competitor insurers for much less, they capitulated after some hard bargaining and offered a much better quote.

Since then the quotes have gone up by 13 – 17%, and each time I have to go through the ritual of looking at competitive quotes and haggling with my insurers. The actual monetary increase is comparatively small, so I might appear to be unnecessarily parsimonious, but it’s the principle of it that irks me.

I’m sure insurers automatically increase the premiums to established and loyal customers; treating them as ‘soft targets’ and relying on their ‘inertia’ so they will just shrug their shoulders and pay. Well not me!

Edward
31-07-2018, 20:08
Not only have to do that for car insurance every year but also house insurance, breakdown insurance and other stuff. Always manage to get it reduced. Sky use to be amenable but now just say 'no'.

Am in a two fixed deal for gas/leccy which comes up in Jan '19. No doubt they will just stick me on their standard variable rate without telling me. So I will have to go on that merry go round again doing comparisons.

Also worth checking on newspaper/mag subscriptions if they can do a deal. There is one newspaper we subscribe to and their renewal was just silly. So when I chatted they immediately reduced the annual cost to below last year's and threw in a free Google Home device (worth £90).

Ask them if they'd be willing to cancel the existing policy, then re-insure you on the same terms, but with a 'new business' discount (usually around 10%) and then haggle over the rest. I've done this. It works with some insurers.

Cheapest parcel tape! I'll bet most of us get through a fair bit of brown tape sending off packages of Hi-Fi.

After a bit of hunting around, I think I've tracked down the cheapest at Wilko (Wilkinsons). It's 75p a roll, unlike Tesco who charge £2, it's also cheaper than ebay. Home bargains are reasonable at £1 a roll, which includes a ball of string and luggage labels, not that I use those.

Wilko used to be our 'go to' shop for all sorts of stuff - along with Boyes (same style) but since the last couple of years we have The Range ... much closer by and cheaper for just about everything nondescript that you had no idea you really needed until you did. We have also two new 'cheap tat' stores recently added to the itinerary - Home Sense and Home Bargains - pure joy!

Personally, I hate spending a penny more than necessary on anything (regardless of how insignificant) and will hunt down a bargain wherever they are to be had. Fortunately, Mrs Mikmas is even more thrifty than I.

Not all 'cheap tat' Marco - not by a long chalk.
The Range (for example) sell a lot of known brand products (like Dulux paint and JCB batteries) but at a price that puts other stores, like B&Q or Boots to shame. Geoff mentioned parcel tape - I'm pretty sure, based on my own experience, that you would be really hard put to find a significant difference in quality between the example from Wilko or that from Tesco. Not to mention the number of times wines from Lidl have beaten much posher (and pricier) examples from the likes of Waitrose or M&S in quality tests ;)

Little point in flushing money down the bog ..... :)

I've not heard of The Range. Don't think they have any branches in my area. In terms of paint, as we live in a period property, we mainly use paints reflecting the colours commonly used during that era (i.e.Victorian), from Farrow & Ball.

Geoff mentioned parcel tape - I'm pretty sure, based on my own experience, that you would be really hard put to find a significant difference in quality between the example from Wilko or that from Tesco. Lol - is Tesco now considered as 'exotic'?;)

We don't send many parcels, so I generally use the brown tape I use for my picture-framing business, which is really thick and strong, and never tears, exactly like this although I get it much cheaper from a different supplier I've been using for years: https://www.lionpic.co.uk/p/9206/Superpaper-Self-Adhesive-Brown-Tape-50mm-x-66m-1-roll

Lovely to use and work with, and also great for gagging the mother-in-law:D

As an oenophile of long standing, I'm 100% with you on the Lidl thing! Same applies with Aldi - far better than the selection of wines in most other supermarkets, although Waitrose are ok. M&S is solely for pee-soaked social climbers. The wines in Lidl or Aldi are fine for 'slurping'.

We buy our fine wine, which we keep for special occasions, from specialist wine merchants.

Little point in flushing money down the bog .....

Indeed, but I won't buy shite just to save a few pence. One has standards, dear boy.

Also, sometimes buying cheap stuff is a false economy in the long term, certainly with larger more important items. My policy there is to buy once, but buy well, so that if looked after, whatever it is has the potential to last a lifetime. We did that recently when we bought our Laura Ashley suite for the lounge.

Not cheap, but I doubt we'll need another set in our lifetime.

Marco.
