Nice to see hypocrisy is the order of the day, with everyone and his aunt just shocked that Putin has the gall to call up civilians, you know just like the US with Vietnam, a country thousands of miles away which posed no threat to them whatsoever! (Btw, I think Putin is nuts, and that's why Nato should tread carefully!).

That is one view, but another is that if you look back in history in a down turn or a recession, the poor get poorer and the rich get richer.
The wealthy and rich ride it out and take the opportunity to clean up as and when others are forced to sell up. I suspect if we looked at what companies, and boards large number of the Tories are on and their levels of wealth we would see them in a good position to take advantage.

John Astin also starred in one of my mum's favourite films, Evil Roy Slade. Another favourite was Cactus Jack, with Arnie. She liked daft films. Thay always seemed to have Western themes, like one of her best liked quotes, Bob Hope: "I'll have a milk... in a dirty glass" - Bet no one remembers that!

The annexation of the three Russian invaded Ukraine zones announced today by Putin, saying they are now part of Russia, means that any further attacks or resistance by Ukrainian forces are likely to be declared acts of war against Russia! To capitalise, Putin is likely to say such action is NATO sponsored hostilty. Not good.

Putin really does seem to be in a rush to start a nuclear war, first the referanda bullshit, now these pipelines. He's lashing out like a maniac, and the US should tread carefully, but they never do. We're closer than ever to nuclear holocaust, but where is the CND? Where are the protests, we're walking into Armageddon, yet people are blissfully ignorant. I watched 'Threads' last night, and I'm trying to think of where the safest place to ride out a nuclear holocaust is, then I realised, it doesn't matter, cos 95% of the world will die of starvation anyway, I really don't get this nuclear war thing, a war with no possible victors.

People with no conception of what a real post-apocalyptic world could be like for the few survivors, should read Cormack McCarthy's 'The Road', it paints a bleak and likely very realistic picture. Terrifying really.
im in middle betweem two main cities and one of biggest preto cem plants around about 8 miles as crow flies. to west we also have uk's neclear deterants stored and wind generally comes from there.. so im likely f**ked pretty quick if balloon goes up in full. no point in worrying about it; that wont help me, or change things...but i have a decent supply of meds and whisky to finish job with if needed.
as for winning; the west would likely win overall but its not what i term winning.

Watching Newsnight now, events are progressing with depressing predictability. Talks of a Nato/Russian war, 'boots on the ground' and all the rest, just like it happened in Threads. Putin made a very aggressive speech against the US, saying that they 'set a precedent' with the nuking of Japan in 1945! An analyst said that no Russian leader post WW2 ever made such a hateful speech. Are we only weeks or months away from a full scale nuclear war?

We won't know. If it happens there'll be no warning, not even if missiles are on their way. The powers that be would know briefly, but a warning would just panic everybody for the short time before devastation and save nobody. Best to try and live where there are no strategic targets and that's no guarantee of safety and god knows how the world may look for survivors.
he is a desparate man, but there may well be more sensible ones to take over...who really knows, but they must know that going neclear will only destroy what they want to protect.

That describes Stalin and even he wasn't crackers enough to start WW3. I think Putin is far more intelligent and pragmatic than Stalin. He also doesn't have the absolute power Stalin had. Stalin could make decisions in a vacuum, Putin has to take into account other factors.
I suspect the problem is that he was lied to by his generals about the readiness and proficiency of his armed forces and as a result he's got himself into a stalemate situation.
As usual the media are talking it all up as it gets them viewers.

A nuclear war is likely not worth surviving, depending on how well the US defence systems compare to Russia's. The UK is probably prime target after the US, so probably best to get onto the continent if you can. Judging by previous US actions, they won't be backing down on Ukraine, now everyone's saying that only leaves Putin with the nuclear choice, 'to save face'. But if we know this is likely to lead to nuclear war, then why don't the US back down, or are they too mad they are willing to go nuclear to 'save face' as well?

Apologies, I'd not long got up! But yes, the typical dictator scenario of only telling them what they want to hear. There was that clip on the news of one of his ministers not giving him the right answer, and Putin bullying him until he did. It is exactly displays such as this which I find unnerving, and with constant US prodding, the Russian bear may finally lash out.

That was the point of the concept of 'Mutually Assured Destruction' - that it would prevent a nuclear war. But it only takes one nuclear power to mis-understand the word "mutual" and dismiss the concept for it to fail.

Personally, I'm getting the pooch vaccinated against Rabies, then we're gonna head off to Europe for a month or so, the Uk will be first to be hit alongside the US. I reckon those shopping channels do most of their business in the wee small hours, when tiredness and/or alcohol lowers folks' resistance to the cack they're peddling. Like with the online casino ads. Evil buggers.
Several years ago I bought a battery operated robot from one of these channels, similar to the tin plate jobbies we got as kids in the 60s. It was only after a couple of years that I remembered, "Hey, I never got my robot". Couldn't even remember what shopping channel it was. Only cost about a tenner iirc.
Had one like this as a kid. Wish I still had it.

Most of the time I can forget about my advancing years, but this last couple of weeks has brought a healthy dose of reality via the letterbox.
2 weeks ago the NHS sent me my bi-annual shit kit, which has just come back as 'normal'. Hoorah! Last week I got invites for Covid booster and also a 'flu jab. Also an appointment for later this month to have a scan for AAA (nothing to do with my modest alcohol consumption, but something to do with aneurisms).
Better news today though: Apparently I become "normal retirement age" in January (forgot all about this), and a private pension from my dim and distant past will be paying me a lot more than I expected. Which is nice. With a lump sum on the front of it.
Mrs. P's reaction: "I can see what you're thinking, no chance!" I've no idea what she's on about :)
Good news that mate, two pensions, see if you can syphon some of it off.:D

Yes that would be nice. Although state pension doesn't kick in for another two years. I quite like the idea of going from working six days a week to just four. Or less. But that's not the road to Focal Kanta-ville, so we'll see :)

Thanks Barry, I must admit I'm feeling fairly upbeat tonight, some financial pressure has been lifted. In addition, as the company I'm sub contracted to take 20% of everything I earn, a decent tax rebate is winging its way. Not treating myself will take a fair bit of self-control...

In the early stages of having a new kitchen fitted. The room is just a shell, containing a working fridge and nothing else. Temporary kitchen is a 4' x 2' Kallax ubit from IKEA in the hallway. Somehow Mrs. P has managed to fit tea and coffee making facilities, my posh coffee maker, toaster and microwave on top. And a washing up bowl in the bath.
Still, it's only for a week they reckon. I'll be sick of takeaways by then. Lamb Jalfrezi tonight.

The bloke told us one week. I was sceptical, but he started ripping out yesterday morning, and by 1pm the whole kitchen including wall tiles, were in a skip. Plasterer been in today, and boarded the walls. I think that's pretty good going, but one week start to finish? I'll keep you posted.

They're twenty years old mate. Fitted by an alcoholic who stole our bottles of spirit by day, and used them to get pissed on his canal barge by night. If he'd fallen into the canal and drowned on the first night, we might still have a functioning kitchen*
Having said that, I could put up with it, but well, it's not up to me. Not if I want feeding...

Our week of kitchenless dining continues, with a trip to a local pub for our tea (as it got good reviews online).
I had steak and ale pie with skin-on fries and garden peas. Skin-on fries is just a fancy way of saying they sacked the potato peeler. The peas came in a pot the size of a Kinder egg. And I don't care what anyone thinks, but a pot of gravy with a few bits of steak and a pastry lid is not a pie! As for the chunks of steak: honestly, if I threw one at your head it would bloody hurt. 14 quid!
I can't even pronounce what Anita had, but she seemed to like it. She even gave me her chips as she could see I had a right face on me. Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh, but the shape of the girl who brought the food suggests she may be 'skimming' on the way from the kitchen.
Still, tomorrow and Monday will be Chinese as is our tradition, Tuesday Domino's, after that who knows. First World problems eh.

Going off in a garden backing on to ours. Not much to look at, just a lot of very loud bangs. The cat's out there somewhere, and isn't for coming in, not even for her Dreamies. There is no need for fireworks to be on general sale, should be organised displays ONLY. On bonfire night. So I don't need to keep the cat in from October till the New Year.
In the meantime I'd like to see our next-street neighbour being made to stand open-legged over one of those fireworks. That would make his eyes light up. I'd pay good money to go to that display.

We've had the fireworks racket every night for the last week, centering around 24th October when the noise was unbelievable, as it is every year! The poor mutt is terrified by it all. Strangely, my last dog loved it all and begged to go out and see and hear the fireworks.

I don't know why plant based has to be marketed as meat replacement, chicken pieces or pork sausages etc. If I want to eat a plant based diet then why do I need to pretend its something it isn't !
I love some vegetable dishes for the fact they celebrate them cauliflower, broccoli, courgettes, etc , I also love a decent baked bean lasagne or vegetable curry.
So why if I don't want to eat meet do I have to pretend I do by eating plant based "pork" sausages !
If I'm a vegan, vegetarian, piscatorian or plant based thats my choice. If I want a 12oz prime Angus Fillet Steak thats my choice.

Well I suppose it had to happen.
This afternoon I was working on an upstairs window, and i fell off the ladder, about 3 metres. Or rather the ladder slid away with me on it. Got a rather large gash on my left shin ("Is that white bit a tendon?" "No I think it's a bone") So a trip to A&E. Was able to drive my van as it's an automatic.
Four bloody hours there, including tetanus jab, (third jab in eight days) clean inside the wound (that smarted a bit), and an x-ray (no fractures :)) All the staff there look fresh out of school. The radiologist looked at my outer calf muscle and exclaimed "Wow, what's happened there?" "Nothing's happened, that's my shape":( Ok I know my shape generally won't get me on the cover of "Men's Health", but really?
Mrs. P met me there, and told me I was very brave. Didn't get a lollipop or a sticker though.
Anyway, after tomorrow I'm holiday for a week. Which is just as well.

Thanks everyone, I'm feeling a lot better today. The gashed shin isn't giving me any problems, it's all the other bits, both ankles, right wrist and elbow. Didn't do much this morning, just a quick job survey and an hour overseeing a job we didn't finish yesterday because of the er, ladder thing.
At home now, giving an Edie Brickell CD an airing. I'll give vinyl a miss for a couple of days, too much getting up to change sides.
After the weekend we're going to have a couple of days in Poole. There's a good record shop down there (Boiler Room Records), so might manage a couple of purchases if Mrs. P's sympathy for my plight will last that long :)

While I was in the waiting room the other day, a bloke about my age came in, sat down, and started huffing and puffing while clutching his chest. A quick look round, then switched to clutching his right arm. After 10 minutes of being ignored he got up and bought a bottle of Fanta and a bag of crisps. Then made a couple of calls, before moving out to the corridor to be able to suffer more visibly. Still didn't get seen before me though.

A farmer I know in Preston once got a couple of dozen tinkers set up in one of his fields. So he dumped a few tons of cow shit and straw at the gate, blocking their access. They must have known that clearing it would just lead to the farmer re-blocking the entrance, so a day or two later enough was removed to allow them to get out, and they were gone, As far as I know they never returned.

Can't remember last time I slept right through, but it's been years not months. I need to get a clock that glows in the dark - when I wake in the middle of the night and check what time it is with my phone, it wakes up and bleeps notifications at me. I could switch it off, but I need the alarm in the winter months.

went the supermarket, realised when I got to the till I had no money on me, fortunately had my card so had to pay on that.
Did not have any waffles or potato cakes in stock. Unbelievable as that was the two main things I wanted. Had to buy some weird Belgian waffles instead. You can't get proper waffles in this stupid country but the ones they usually sell are an acceptable compromise. The Belgian things are just too sweet.
They did open a new till for me though so no waiting, at least that was a positive.

I did not go from start of covid up until end of April this year. I hate it but if you time it right you can be in and out in ten minutes.

It is a piece of piss. I get pancake duties every year, can never remember how, so just make it up as I go along. Always works out ok. I accept waffle making will be messy, but cleaning up afterwards is also a piece of piss, she tells me :)

I'll resist the temptation to comment on Scottish banknotes. No I won't, I'll say this: One of my Scottish mates takes umbrage at shops down here that don't want Scottish notes ("I think you'll find they're legal tender!") Doesn't accept that English folks' not being familiar enough with them makes it easier to be fooled by forgeries.
When I was a youngster I used to like returning from me hols with Scottish notes, it made me feel like an international jet setter. Like bringing home a straw donkey from Benidorm. But these days it's just a pain.
Off up to Ayr on Friday for the weekend, and we'll be rid of any paper money before we return, spend it on white pudding and Lorne sausage :)

The DVLA recently reminded me I have reached the age where I have to renew my driving licence.
They sent me a rather complicated form which was not exactly clear how much of it should be filled - but also said I could do it on-line. Now I have had in the past poor experience in doing things on-line: you fill it all out, press 'submit', only to find out you have missed something, or it just goes back to the beginning; a bit like 'Groundhog Day'.
But having nothing to loose, I gave it a go. And to my great surprise my new photo driving licence arrived today, less than a week after application. And it didn't cost me anything (well apart from the cost of a stamp, as I have to return my old licence).
It probably helped that I was able to quote my passport number, so they had a photo and signature on file.

I did ask my mother about the recipe that her mother used, but my mother has zero interest in cooking food or even eating food and so has no idea. Looks like the recipe died with my grandmother.
Did once share a house with a bloke who used lard to cook pretty much everything. He'd go through one of those big blocks in a week. He was about twenty stone and struggled to breath though, so there is a downside.
simple to make really.. mashed potato and sr flour at 4/1 potato to flour and about a 20th potato in marg. if mash is leftover very little seasoning will be needed.. i used to add a bit of cheese too.
mix it with a wooden spoon until it a good usable dough. ie, dry enough to roll but moist enough not to crack etc..
then roll out in circle. cut into triangles nd dry fry them til coloured on both sides.

Yeah the lard may have contributed, but it was probably more about quantity than quality of his meals. I'd say most foods are fine in moderation, including lard. Since foods went 'healthier' (low fat, low salt, sugar-free), we've never been such a nation of fatties.
When I was at primary school, each year had perhaps one kid who was notably heavier than the rest. These days it's maybe more like a third. I'd say my lardy childhood diet combined with being kicked out of the house each day to make my own fun was probably better than today's kids on their X Box all day while scoffing bags of crisps cooked in sunflower oil.
rarely used lard. ghee i used to use a lot tho, and is ideal for this recipe if you have it.

Sounds like the missus. The only time she eats a cooked meal is when I do something. She weighs around six stone, seems healthy enough though. Good job I cook food most days.

lol that's true. I live in a poor area but there's loads of chunkers about. Went out for a meal with work last week, all you can eat Chinese/Asian buffet for sixteen quid. The place was rammed even at six o'clock and it was a massive place, bigger than a football pitch.
There were people there large enough to eat everything that was laid out on their own. Not their first time there either looking at the skill with which they could pile up massive amounts of food onto the tiny plates.
Don't want to be making too many trips back and forth to the buffet tables - that's burning precious calories!

i just dip a slice of bread in egg with a touch of milk and salt/pepper, and sometimes something spicy and fried til egg goes brown. also i often cut bread in 2 and fill it with marg, cheese and whatever and put it in pan til cheese melts. makes a lovely change. i dont really eat bread tho now as im a little allergic as i am with lactose milk. you can get bread without wheat tho, but its mostly crap.

Well I suppose it had to happen.
This afternoon I was working on an upstairs window, and i fell off the ladder, about 3 metres. Or rather the ladder slid away with me on it. Got a rather large gash on my left shin ("Is that white bit a tendon?" "No I think it's a bone") So a trip to A&E. Was able to drive my van as it's an automatic.
Four bloody hours there, including tetanus jab, (third jab in eight days) clean inside the wound (that smarted a bit), and an x-ray (no fractures :)) All the staff there look fresh out of school. The radiologist looked at my outer calf muscle and exclaimed "Wow, what's happened there?" "Nothing's happened, that's my shape":( Ok I know my shape generally won't get me on the cover of "Men's Health", but really?
Mrs. P met me there, and told me I was very brave. Didn't get a lollipop or a sticker though.
Anyway, after tomorrow I'm holiday for a week. Which is just as well.
Three and a half weeks later, and the injury is getting worse. It's gaping, red all round and smells wrong, in spite of all the antibiotics. Took myself down to A&E at 7.30 this morning, to try and get on top of this. Got seen a lot quicker, had another X-ray to see if the infection has gone into the bone (I'm told that is not good), but X-ray couldn't confirm one way or another.
So now I'm off to A&E in Preston, where I will get to skip the queue and see some orthopaedic doc. Who may do some intravenous antibiotics and look at surgery options. Wish me luck...
What's really bothering me is the extortionate hospital parking charges. They must think I'm made of money.
Three and a half weeks later, and the injury is getting worse. It's gaping, red all round and smells wrong, in spite of all the antibiotics. Took myself down to A&E at 7.30 this morning, to try and get on top of this. Got seen a lot quicker, had another X-ray to see if the infection has gone into the bone (I'm told that is not good), but X-ray couldn't confirm one way or another.

In the meantime a nice lady took some bloods, what for I do not know. But I did get a sticker with a bear on it and the word 'BRAVE'. I wore that sticker with pride for the remaining 7 hours I spent there, as I only got to see plasticman at 8,45pm.
Anyway, he reckons the infection is minimal and gave it a good clean and re-dress, and sent pictures of it to someone more senior. I'm off back on Wed. Then we'll see :)

Thanks Grant, 'tis indeed. And Mrs. P stayed with me for the entire 9 hour wait, bought me a 12" sub for me dinner, and kept me calm as I'm not the most patient of patients. She reckons all men are wusses when it comes to pain, but I have a sticker that proves otherwise :)

Thanks Geoff, but I have never been good as new, so it's not going to happen now... I'm going to look after myself better from now on. Some would call it 'risk averse', I don't care, I just don't want the A&E experience ever again if I can help it.
There was one bloke, had cerebral palsy or something, in there with his carer, looked like he'd fallen face first from his wheelchair. From 11am until about 6pm he didn't go anywhere, the carer constantly mopped the blood from his mouth, as did the changeover carer at 4pm. I would call that poor guy a priority, shocking really.

Can anyone tell me what the deal is with state retirement age? A friend's wife reckons for me (I'll be 65 on New Year's Day) it'll be 66. I had assumed it would be 67 for me. And how much is state pension these days. I'm quite keen to get onto a five day weekend asap :) but I could just about cope with another 12 months of things as they are.

Personally I get quite offended by assumptions about my career choice: I tell them I'm in Human Logistics, but they're not convinced. I feel so trapped :(

She seems to be at pains to stress her African descent to an almost comical degree through her clothing, then gets offended when someone enquires about it. Perhaps the old lady was a bit entitled with the hair touching and enquiring manner, but big deal? Now they're using it to claim 'institutional racism' within the Royal family, these 'activists' are such a dreary po-faced bunch. Shame that they're so influential these days, it won't be long until they start demanding Churchill statues be torn down, and all our museums are emptied.

Maybe Susan Hussey was seeking clarification - but did so in a very rude and racially insensitive way. But she had no right to touch Ms. Fulani's hair in order to read her name badge.
Was she being 'racist'? - I don't know: but imagine if the tables were turned and Ngozi Fulani had asked the same of Susan Hussey.

Hussey had a right to be confused, 'Fulani' dresses in very ethnic African/Caribbean wear, with her hair in long dreads, her real name is also Marlene Headley.
I doub't very much that Hussey would be able to distinguish between Afro-Caribbean and Fulani sartorial styles. Wearing dreadlocks has nothing to do with it - you see people sporting them all over Africa as well as in the Caribbean..
