View Full Version : Time for another upgrade - of the coffee machine type
After having used my Magimix "L'expresso automatic" for the last ten years, it is starting to show it's age.
It has done a great job up to now, but I want something that will give me a better coffee. I have an Isomac Granmacinino grinder, which will be staying for now.
I fancy an Italian style, stainless steel machine, and I am quite tempted by a Rocket Giotto V. Does anybody have experience of this machine, or similar? I was wondering if the rotary pump version was worth the extra cash?
Any other suggestions for a machine that makes a good coffee, and also looks good?
Lovely machine. think the rotary pumps only go on the plumbed in ones Kevin. The home versions with a reservoir have vibratory. Top machine that and all steel mow and a heated brew head
The rotary will work on the reservoir option as well.
The question is if it is worth the extra moola for a quieter machine.
guess it can be done but i wouldnt. they can run dry too easy and often dont last as long. but if noise is an issue then fair enough. the vib pump on these isnt that noisy anyway. Wish I could afford one... think I'd have it in the livingroom :eyebrows:
The info I read suggested that they were more robust, however you make a good point about them being easy to run dry.
My kitchen opens on to the living room, hence wanting something that looks the part as well as making good coffee.
I shall follow this thread with interest, as we're after the same thing! I like the machine you're looking at Kevin, but we'd need something that looks similar (of equal quality), but more compact.
Maybe Grant, our resident coffee machine (and coffee) expert knows of such a device? :)
I'd want it to match the appearance of our Dualit toaster: https://www.dualit.com/products/2-slice-newgen/metallic-charcoal
Marco.
Have a look at the Rocket Appartamento.
It is slightly more compact.
If that is too big, then something like a Rancilio Silvia.
You will need a decent grinder to go with it.
Cheers, mate. The Rancilio Silvia is pretty much spot on for the type of thing I was looking for. Any reccos for grinders? Again small and compact (but well-made) is the key! :)
Marco.
probably get a Silvia myself if i ever get enough dough. the better ones are beyond me and tbh would be overkill for my usage

Lido 3 is superb and best if you are only making the odd coffee. hands on and you can control the speed better so you dont burn the oils. A good burr grinder to better this will cost as much if not more than the Sylvia. love my one
https://www.coffeehit.co.uk/lido-3-hand-coffee-grinder.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwmefOBRBJEiwAf7DstHsFOcC SIgli7nz8pnNqaRamiF_bT87TZoqt0r1Ol6jJEgOWkZyr4xoCV R0QAvD_BwE#fo_c=1166&fo_k=f9bc58127f6410abfffa050b52089cde&fo_s=gplauk
So is the Lido 3 the one you're recommending, Grant? If so, that looks fine :)
Marco.
thats the one ive got Marco. Its hard work especially till it breaks in, but a bit of excersise is good for you and the beans:lol: I got mine from coffee hit too. had it last time you were up.
if you intend making 6 a day then go electric
Don't mind using a bit of elbow grease, mate! Plus, I like having something that's hand-controlled. Once you get used to how it works, you can tailor the results obtained more :)
6-a day? No chance. It'll be used for doing one cappuccino a day (for my breakfast), and some espressos after Sunday lunch, or when we have guests over for a meal who enjoy good coffee.
Marco.
good coffee ground right is 70% of battle for good espresso type drinks. lavazza bean im using at moment come out well on an espresso grind. a little milder than my usual but nice. takes about 45 turns to get a double espresso at that setting which is very fine.. only Turkish being finer
If you want an electric one - try this http://www.happydonkey.co.uk/hd0866-iberital-mc2-auto.html
It is supposed to be one of the best budget ones around.
I am quite tempted by a Mazzer Super Jolly, a Mahlkönig Vario Home or a Baratza Sette 270W.
Nice one, Kevin. I guess it'd depend on how reliable it was. If I were going electric, it'd need to be 100% reliable and designed to last, otherwise, the one Grant recommended makes most sense.
Marco.

review on the lido. id agree with their findings. If you use the beans like climpson roasts then it is hard work, but normal roast are easier. I do like climpson beans tho so happy to take the pain lol

as I get worse I sometimes think I might have to get one so will keep that in mind Kevin. looks ok.
I have no idea how reliable it is.
I read about it here - https://coffeeforums.co.uk/showthread.php?20937-What-can-I-get-for-my-budget
Depending on your budget for a grinder, you can get a decent grinder, that looks the part but it will take up counter space.
Something like this would go nicely with a Silvia - https://www.bellabarista.co.uk/eureka-mignon-instantaneo-grinder-auto-manual-chrome.html.
as I'm not using vinyl at moment I might trade it for some cash and a new machine. Mine is coming to the end of its life. It has done very well as its used every day of its life and its not young, and was never a top notch machine. Still makes decent coffee but the steaming is not as strong as it was,

Linky no worky, mate. I'm being asked to confirm a "security check" before going any further.

Lovely, but way too big. The other one would likely be fine for our needs, as worktop space is limited, and what's there needs used for food prep, etc, not simply for displaying 'attractive gadgets' ;)

Just so you have an idea of the space available, Kev. This is where whatever coffee machine we get would be going (next to the kettle, and toaster when it arrives):

It's part of the new kitchen we've just had built, and what now acts as my 'drinks serving station', so no room for anything too cumbersome :)
Marco.
I see your problem....
The electric grinder will give you a more consistent grind - once you get it dialled in for your machine.
The hand grinder will be fine, but I don't fancy using one of those after we have had a BBQ and need to do coffee for all the guests. (The last one had 43 people in attendance!)
43?? You're keen! Did you invite the whole village? ;)
If we did anything like that, it'd have to be an outdoor event, as there'd be no room in the house for that many folk. Eight is about our max!
Marco.
2 at a time is my limit. any more guests if I had any would get instant and like it

Obviously, a BBQ is held outside and I have a reasonable size garden.
Most of them are smaller affairs, but you have to be able to cater for the bigger events too.

Ah, I thought it would've been an outdoor event. The same would apply with us, as we also have a sizeable garden. Not sure, however, that I know 43 people I'd like to share my company with! ;)

Lol... Where've ya been? Thought you'd immigrated! ;)
There's some stuff for you to see in the mod room.
Marco.
I've got a Rocket Giotto with PID and it is one beautiful machine.
I bought mine from a seller on eBay who is about three miles from the Rocket factory.
They make great coffee but make no mistake cheaper machines can do as well. They just won't look as 'fuck off' good.
At the end of the day you are just forcing hot water under pressure though some coffee. That isn't Rocket science, LOL.
I posted some porno pics before on this forum.
Here's a couple of points.
My brother has the rotary pump version but no PID. It is quiet and you can plumb it into the water mains. He hasn't done that and it isn't worth the effort IMHO. The water tank is plenty big enough.
Any machine with an external group head presents a warm up problem. You can't make good coffee until this thing has warmed up and it takes about 10 minutes to get really warm. This is such an issue I control mine via a wi-fi plug via my phone or Alexa, so I can turn it on in the morning from two floor levels up.
I personally don't think the rotary pump is worth the money. But if you need it to be quiet then it will be worth it.
You can get thermometers to fit on the group head but I have not bothered. It is obvious when it is hot enough. Just touch it!
So far very reliable - after maybe two years no issues.
Beautifully built internally with lots of copper. Just watch a take apart video on YouTube to confirm.
Justin,
Thanks for the feedback. Your pictures are not showing anymore for me.

Justin,

Out of interest, what grinder are you using with it?Ascaso i-Mini. I guarantee you it is seriously good for the money. It is capable of grinding way finer than you will want.
My brother had one, then got a more expensive Rancillo - report was waste of money.
Thanks for the feedback.
I have been looking at the rather lovely Rocket Fausto, as apparently my Isomac won't be good enough.
It seems to go pretty fine to me.

Cheers, mate. The Rancilio Silvia is pretty much spot on for the type of thing I was looking for. Any reccos for grinders? Again small and compact (but well-made) is the key! :)
Marco.
One downside of the Silvia is the single boiler. You will have to wait between pulling the coffee and steaming the milk. If you want to do another espresso afterwards, you will need to use a cooling flush....
You could avoid this by spending a bit more (actually double) on a dual boiler machine, like a Profitec 300 - https://www.bellabarista.co.uk/profitec-300-dual-boiler.html.
Depending on your usage, you really may not need to get a double boiler. Careful planning when making the drinks can solve the issue.

I think I will try my current grinder first, but a Giotto Type V is looking favourite.

The Rancilio Silvia is the only all metal machine with brass boiler at anything like the price. It's been a best-seller for decades, for good reason. I'm a bit of a coffee addict, have two of them, one at home and one in the office. Used daily for the last 4 to 5 years.
Get a package with the Rancilio grinder, from here:
https://www.coffeeitalia.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=set-ranc-2uk
These are Italian wholesalers and sell every coffee machine known to man. Good prices, but funny accents.
The best value lever machine is this one:

You have space above the wine rack for a grinder, and the coffee machine should fir under the cupboard. Happy days....
Did you see my comments about the single boiler machines?

Apparently the are the only official distributor in the UK, so their warranty has value
Rancilio grinders are good, although the doserless ones are, or can be a bit messy. look cool tho. I hope to stick to my manual
You have space above the wine rack for a grinder, and the coffee machine should fir under the cupboard. Happy days....
Indeed, but don't forget that the Dualit toaster's still to go there, too!
There is (or rather will be after tomorrow) a fairly large granite worktop, situated at the opposite end of the kitchen, some of which could be used for storing the coffee machine itself and/or grinder (or for that matter, toaster and kettle).
However, ours is very much a working kitchen, not like in some houses, simply a 'display area' for poncy gadgets, where almost zero cooking happens, so do bear that in mind ;)
Did you see my comments about the single boiler machines?
No, swing me by them again...
Marco.

I keep the Rancilio grinder in the cupboard most of the time, grind a batch into a resealable jar that will last me a week or so.
I buy lots of coffees from Monmouth Coffee, but I really like the ground Macchu Pichu Fairtrade coffee. You can get it at Sainsbury and Waitrose.
https://www.ethicalsuperstore.com/products/cafedirect/macchu-pichu-organic-roast-and-ground-coffee/?PCode=DSGPESS15&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIy_ONp_fj1gIVrbftCh1GMAp6EAQYASAB EgJkPPD_BwE
The grind is not fine enough, so I put it through the Rancilio set at 11 or 12.
I've found most ground coffee is ground to caffetiere fineness, not expresso, which is much finer.

Cheers, and noted. Hey, I guess there's got to be some form of compromise at that price! Fortunately, I'm never in that much of a hurry... ;)
Marco.
Yep, there is always a compromise somewhere.
That is why I got a Philips Senseo Twsiter - A milk Frother. No more waiting when someones suddenly asks for a single espresso after you have switched to steam!
All milk is currently frothed steamless, leaving the machine to do just coffee.
For me if I cant steam milk then the deal is a bogey :) I like sweet microfoam

That's a good shout too Kevin, and a handy gadget to have around regardless. It would also help keep the coffee machine itself cleaner! :)

I am just amazed how much Rocket Giottos have gone up looking at Bella Barista. Mine cost me £900 using my Italian contact.
Anyway, wine is on the agenda tonight, to celebrate the (very near) completion of our new kitchen, but which to choose.....

If you get the Rocket you'll love it and so will your kitchen. And it will stop the upgrade urge cos it is just about good enough.
Plus an Ascaso i-Mini. Sorted.

Seriously I don't think Marco will need any more than a Silvia for his usesIt was a pretentious post to ignite his spark plugs I have no idea really. I lived with a Gaggia Classic for a few years and it was OK.
Still if he does like coffee enough it is a fair bet.
Lol - very good, Justers! You trying to turn me into a coffee machine-swapper? I iz no playin'! :eyebrows:
No, Grant's right. The Silvia will do me nicely, as quite simply, I don't drink enough coffee (or am enough of a connoisseur) to justify the use of anything more expensive, especially as Del is more of a tea drinker, so in reality the machine will be used for me, and also others visiting who appreciate nice coffee.
Therefore, the plan will be to go for the Silvia 'package' (with the grinder) and the milk frothing device Kevin recommended, which will also come in handy for making frothy milk chocolate!
Then I'll move the kettle and toaster to the other side of the kitchen, and keep all three items above in my 'drinks station', beside the wine rack. Job done
Marco.
Dont say that! I need a new machine;)
There are lots of new things you need, shweety, which are 'worn out', but we won't go there... :D

You'll be more than welcome to pop round for a meal and some choons, once I get my listening room back, which is [slowly, but surely] being cleared of various kitchen paraphernalia!
Marco.
Top tip time
Never mind frothing devices, you need one of these, or in my case two of these.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LCK8z66hnok
They are not much more than normal pitchers and you get perfectly aerated milk every time. The idea is to get enough air in it whilst keeping it under 65 degrees.
£23 from here

Cheers, John. That was exactly the brief. We wanted the kitchen to feel as if it had been part of the house already, working in sympathy with the surroundings, rather than a 'squeaky clean' new addition.
Yeah, lots of 'ovenage', lol... The Miele stuff is really well made.
From the top: main oven, then combination steam oven [great for fish] and microwave, and underneath that a 'warming drawer', which is ideal for the likes of resting cooked joints of meat, without them getting cold in the process, so should come in handy for the goose at Christmas! :)
Marco.
We've gone for an induction hob too, the principle behind which is rather clever. If you watch these two short videos, you'll see:

you get induction ovens as well, and samsung have the flame version which although a gimmick is cool

They're readily available now John, in all good lighting shops, unfortunately as a result of becoming 'trendy'!
I *so* hate it when things I like become 'fashionable', as I seek the complete opposite!! My pet hate-term is 'Trending Now', as you so often see on websites now, which all the sheep will follow...
Btw, this is how the 'kitchen' started out:

Same area, as shown in the last picture above, 10 months on...

I think it's safe to say that reasonable progress has been made ;)
Marco.
:stalks: old houses are the best....and the worst.
Renovated an old house and done a lot of the work myself so I know where you're coming from. What's most annoying is that 90% of the work, all the stuff that was dirty hard graft, isn't seen *but* the standard of the final finish is completely determined by the preparation work. You've obviously done this properly with a full gut-out which should mean a top quality fit and finish that should look good and be hassle free for the next 30 years.
Great job

Absolutely, mate. Any job is only as good as the prep you're willing to put in. When we embark on these projects, our goal is always to do things *right*, by cutting no corners. As you'll appreciate, a huge amount of (unseen) building work went into providing the platform (base), from which the 'sexy stuff' later gets to shine :)
Fortunately, DarrenHW, a member here, is a builder and a good friend of mine, so he did most of the hard graft! He's a top-notch bloke, btw, and so I wouldn't hesitate to recommend his services to anyone.
If you look at the exposed brick section in the 'now' picture, as a small example, and compare it to what was there before, you'll see it looks entirely different. That alone took some doing, bringing it up to how it currently looks.

Great job
Cheers, mate. It was a veritable gut-out, as what was there before was (very BAD) brown '1970s chic' ('splash effect' tiles, etc, you know the score)! So that was all ripped out, and we simply started again from scratch.
I won't tell you how much it's all cost, but let's just say you could buy a small flat round here for less!!
Marco.
Really like the way you've left the exposed brickwork, especially the arch above the door.
Yes doing a proper job is expensive but what we found is if you sell at a later date, while you might not get *all* your money back, people recognize quality and will go that bit extra and it will also sell very quickly.
It's great if you can get a good tradesman, good work Darren!

Ain't that the truth. Kitchens defo sell houses, however, we're planning on being here for a wee while yet! :)
Yup, Darren is da man :youtheman:
Marco.
Just got a couple of 'new' original Victorian doors with stained glass panels fitted for the kitchen door, leading into the bathroom, and for the bathroom itself:

We're really pleased with how they've turned out :)
How the first one integrates into the kitchen:

Helps add some colour and character I think!
Marco.
Very nice Marco, waxed finish?
The project's really coming together now, looks fantastic, it's a credit to you both.
You'll enjoy cooking this Christmas!
Yep, waxed... Can you tell? :)
Indeed, Christmas should be fun!
Marco.
Steering this away from Marco's new kitchen and back on topic slightly, I have just ordered my grinder - A Mazzer Mini Electronic Model A like this (http://www.mazzer.com/en/electronic-grinder-dosers/mini-electronic-a/).
https://www.espressoplanet.com/images/P/mazzer5_1.jpg
I got a good deal on it, so it leaves me more money for the machine.
I have gone through various reviews and spoken to several people and I will be ordering an ECM Synchronika next month. That should last me a good few years, as it has top class build quality with stainless steel boilers etc.
Detail on the coffee machine can be found here (http://www.ecm.de/en/products/details/product/Product/Details/synchronika/) if anybody is interested.

Yes it is expensive, more than I wanted to pay originally but this negates the need for future upgrades. I am buying it from my 20 year long service award from work, so I wanted something special.
If the grinder does not meet my expectations, I should be able to sell it with very little loss, and I will then go for something "better".
I will report back in about a month or so, after I have ordered and received the machine.
I do expect it to take a while for me to learn how to get the best out of it though, so it is going to be an interesting challenge.
Fantastic stuff, Kevin. That *really* looks top notch! A lovely thing to buy with your long service award. You'll be able to open your own coffee shop now!
Mine is a double espresso :D
Marco.
nice.. good luck with the learning curve :)
Wow, that looks fantastic! Enjoy!
Marco,
To keep you new kitchen tidy, I can recommend one of these - Grindenstein Knock Box (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Grindenstein-Knock-Out-Box-Black/dp/B0016J7YQM)
It should store on the espresso machine when not in use, and makes much less noise than knocking out coffee grinds into the bin.
i use a teaspoon into a scaucer ...even quieter :D
Cheers, mate. Now added to my list of accessories to get when the Rancilio arrives
Marco.

Aren't those part of your 'morning regime', shweety, along with a magnifying glass and tweezers? :eyebrows:
Marco.

yes dharling, but ALWAYS into a scaucer:eyebrows:
Hehehe... Good job it's you who's doing the washing up, not me!
Btw, is a "scaucer" a Scouse saucer? ;)
Marco.
yup, a Scouse flying scaucer;)

My brother bought me one for Christmas a couple of years ago. I now have to return the favour.
Something you shouldn't buy because you know it just isn't worth it. Until you own one.:D
Looks, cool! How much is it? :)
Marco.
Well, that's not too silly... Might well nab one of those too, when the time comes :)
Marco.

Is it really that good?
Well, that is the coffee machine ordered.
It should be with me by next weekend. Time for a caffeine fired weekend!
The grinder is at the local depot ready for me to collect.
Bet you can't wait. Enjoy!
Marco.
I have been after a decent machine for well over ten years - longer than I can remember.
When I moved to France 10 years ago, the Mrs bought me the Magimix L'expresso automatique that I have now.
I have been patiently and quietly waiting for it to break, but it is still going strong!
I joined a UK coffee forum for some advice http://www.coffeeforums.co.uk and it seems like the coffee version of AoS. There are plenty of mods for the Silvia to get even better coffee out of it.
I have just bought a TP Link WiFi plug for he coffee machine.
It will allow me to set a timer to switch the machine on automatically, or turn it on from work to allow it to heat up for when I arrive home.
The Mazzer Mini grinder turned up today.
It is a nice bit of kit, as it delivers the same amount of coffee every time (once programmed in steps of 0.05 seconds).
I have already had a couple of Espressos since I have been home from work.
It has arrived!

I almost gave myself a Hernia lifting it out of the box as it is really heavy. After setting up the machine and letting it warm up, it was time for the moment of truth...

It has produced one of the best espresso I have had in a long time. I am really happy with it, and will try the steaming power out tomorrow morning when I make my usual cappuccino.
Fantastic, Kev. That's a work of art... :wow: :stalks:
You must really be chuffed!
Marco.
very smart.. im jealous :D
Yes, well chuffed indeed.
I am looking for excuses to make coffee at the moment.
It really is good tasting coffee, and the amount of crema is unbelievable compared to my old coffee machine!
I still need to organise coffee corner a bit, and pack the milk frother away. I don't think I will be needing that any more.
