A cold and wet start to month is always ominous for October. Gonna be a bad winter :D

There's some 'fancy' weather arriving tomorrow. Hurricane Ophelia is due to hit the UK, they are not sure how strong the wind may be. It'll affect the whole of the UK, but predicted to be strongest to the north, so batten down the hatches!! :eek:

I think we'll be missing the bulk of it, as it's predicted to hit us at only 50mph... Anyway, getting all of the outdoor jobs done today, as it's like a sunny spring day here at the moment, and really mild [in fact we still haven't lit the wood burner yet, even at night].

When the storm hits tomorrow, I'll be indoors sanding the ceiling in the kitchen, and getting all the walls nicely smooth and prepared for the top colour - that is, once we've chosen it! :)

They are getting closer to controlling these winds apparently, or at least steering them. Soot and dust particles being seeded to tops of the hurricane etc. Trouble is someone else cops it and it is no longer an act of God then. Morals eh?

The wind is getting stronger and blustery. The sky is sort of overcast, but the sun can be seen as an orange blob with haze around it. Humid and warm though.

No, Friday nights for the boyfriends, Saturday night for the wives... anyway made it home completely unscathed. Essentially, it's just a bit windy. Did see a cyclist get blown in front of a bus: he was unhappy but unharmed.

Hi Jerry

Yes it has now. It was very bad for a few hours in the afternoon, and during that period properties around me and behind were damaged. I think I made it through ok, but it was too dangerous to look while it was light. I was outside during a lull in the evening but couldn't see well to know if I am ok or not.

The wind returned for a bit in the later evening but not as bad. Lots of folks down south had a very bad day, three people died. I woke early I had left the radio on, still a bit windy outside.

I appreciate your asking, thank you.

Marco
17-10-2017, 06:21
Glad you've got through it ok, Neil. I hope when you get the chance to have a look at your property in daylight that there hasn't been any damage, or certainly nothing significant. Hope everyone else got through it ok, too.

Around here, it was more of a 'storm in a teacup' than anything else. There are a lot of leaves to clear up, though!

Marco.

My lad and I were asked to call the Police (which we didnt ) but we went down for a larf!!

There it was parked across the road after taking out the recycling boxes:D

No hand brake on or in gear either . We pushed it back 4 ft and put bricks behind the wheels , (so peeps could get past )and buggered off:lol:

Can do no better than to quote Keats:

TO AUTUMN.

SEASON of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
Or on a half-reap’d furrow sound asleep,
Drows’d with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers:
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook;
Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,
Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.

Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,—
While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
And touch the stubble plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

It's gloomy and overcast, pretty windy too, but mild at 18C. Could get a shower I think.

They say we are due for a warmer spell in the next few days with temperatures maybe up in the twenties once the wind turns and comes from the south.

Bit of a fresh start today at 6C. 12C now and won't get warmer I think, as the wind is from the N/E. As usual, when the wind is in that direction, I can hear the skeet shooting five miles away at the West London Shooting Grounds. Load of shotgun bangs. Must be a busy day there.

Nah, the cold is great! It's dampness (damp air) that's bad... Cold, crisp, dry sunny days like this (at least it is here) are very healthy.

If you're outside, then simply wrap up well and enjoy a lovely brisk walk in the park (such as I'm about to do soon) :cool:
