Speaker Assistance Please

Hi Guys, I don't post very often but am an avid reader of the posts. I would like a bit of advice and guidance on some new speakers. My system is a Rega P3-24 turntable going into a beast of a Yamaha AS 1100 amp. My current speakers are Monitor Audio Bronze standmounters that I have had for fifteen years so would now like to update. I want to stick with standmounters and have a budget of up to £1200 but would happily spend £500 if they sounded brilliant on my system. Could you recommend some speakers for me to audition, thanks in advance.

There is no golden rule here - it depends a lot on your personal preferences.

I recently tried out as many sub £1000 speakers as I could - the Focal Aria 906 stood out for me compared to the likes of Wharfedale, Q Accoustics, Monitor Audio, B & W, Rega, Russel K, to name a few. Quite big for standmounts, but they look deluxe.

The differences? More open sound, better image depth, bass more present and tighter, and considerably smoother top end (to these ears).

With your budget you could stretch to some of the small Tablette Proac speakers, but they are more demanding of high quality source/amp. They will suprise you with how loud they can get and how much bass they can produce, when pushed.

Rumour has it that Dahli Menuet is very similar, but for a lot less money (~ £800), though on specs alone, they don't go down as low in the bass.

I'm sure there are a ton of others out there - hopefully you will found something to suite.

Pretty wide field for recommendations, standmounters up to £1200. The world is your lobster.

My suggestion: You could get some Yamaha NS100M for around £800 second hand. Maybe a bit cheaper if you drop on.

You could contat a local dealer if you want new , take your amp and P3 along for a listening session or have some on home demo ?

A P3 is a fine deck but it's getting out of it's depth with second hand speakers costing £1K.

I appreciate that and will be updating to a more appropriate deck such as a Rega RP8 as funds allow but want to get the long term speakers sorted first.

I would suggest you look at Cambridge Aeromax 2's. These speakers are fitted with the latest version of the BMR driver. They are efficient for a standmount with a decent bass response. I have the Aeromax 6's myself. The BMR driver is the thing that is different to all other two way speakers allowing the Crossover to be set at 200 HZ, well out of the mid range. Cambridge Audio have great claims for the sound quality of these speakers and having experienced the 6's I wouldn't disagree. Available from direct from the Cambridge site.

I might have seen a pair for sale in eBay or gumtree cheap as they had no grilles.
