Some way out TTs (and tone arms) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1OUYOvxNX0'

All that just to replay a flawed and imperfect sound storage medium.

In terms of hifi, having been round the Munich show and seen how easy it would be to blow £100k on a load of relative (but shiny/branded) crap, I doubt whether much if anything in my system would change. (Having said that at 'list' my current setup would be over £50k - needless to say it owes me less than 20-30% of that but it's still a lot of dosh, more than anything else I own bar the house and my LPs/CDs from 40 years of record collecting).

I certainly wouldn't replace it with LV stuff, which underwhelmed/underperformed at Munich. thanks but no thanks.

What would change though is my house - my current kit would undoubtedly be improved in a better/dedicated room.

I don't do the lottery though but working toward the max allocation of premium bonds (where the odds aren't much different but you keep the stake!).

Regardless of budget, A proper pair of Tannoys would be in there, along maybe with some vintage Altecs (good electrostatics could figure as well). Amps possibly Radford Revival or Pass. TVC and LDR pre-amp offerings would be 'soak tested'. The rest? A bit of 'suck it and see'. And that includes the front end (ends).

They spent all that time yapping before one of them having the bright idea of listening to music. I thought the guy describing the system sounded more like the late Stanley Unwin than a sales rep ha ha.

The level control on the speakers have a lock so 'maids and children' can't mess with them.

Good idea: I often have that problem with my staff cocking about with my system when I'm not there.

Anyway he has sold 8 pairs so far, good luck to him, it all helps the balance of payments. I had a chat with him on the dog once about 20 years ago, very helpful and patient bloke.

If I won the lottery, I certainly wouldn't be spending it all on hi-fi!! Bizarre as it may seem, folks, there are other (rather more important) things in life ;)

Marco.

I wouldn't spend it all on hi-fi either. Just most of it :D

Marco
02-09-2017, 08:21
Lol - depending on how much we're talking about, the only hi-fi I'd spend it on would be on one of the new SP10s, which I'd put into an Artisan Fidelity plinth.

The rest would go on our house, friends and family, cars and travelling abroad! :)

Marco.

Well I would buy a detached house with some of it but round here that would hardly make a dent in a lottery win.

Marco
02-09-2017, 08:29
Lol - why on earth would you still live in Stoke? No disrespect, but wouldn't you prefer your detached house to be somewhere nicer, perhaps by the sea (and abroad in warmer climes), since you like the beach so much? :)

My Italian blood will likely always dictate that we'll end up living in Italy or abroad, as the lifestyle and climate there is much more my cup of tea!

A Pioneer SX 1250 receiver or kenwood/Sansui equivalent.
given the current rising prices of yer vintage silver stuff on thiefbay and a substantial win, might even have enough spare change for chips.

sadly I parted with a Yamaha CR1020 AND a Sansui 8080 a few scant years before the interest in "classic" kit took hold..........I could weep!!

I think there is a slight dishonesty here , I reckon if any f**ker here won the big one , and lets say its real big , like eye wateringly so , a small dollop would go on a dream setup.

If you won say £8 mill, you could set up all loved ones , by a new gaff and still find £100 grand for hifi

I would be on the phone to Nagra Audio before the cheque f**king cleared

Honestly I don't know if you've been to Munich but as I said, it was an eye opener for me just how easy it would be to spend £100k and end up with a setup many here would consider 'meh'.

That's very true. Not been to Munich, but I've heard plenty of upper 'high end' gear with monstrous prices that did nothing for me. I think it's the difference between having some fair idea of what sounds good to you and and aiming for that. Or just splashing out big time and buying something expensive 'cos one is loaded (but clueless :D)!

I really, genuinely wouldn't. There are some hifi things I'd like to try out, but most can be had for (relative) buttons. I don't even need a bigger house, and I like where I'm living. But as I said, I don't even do the lottery, so it's all academic to me.

And. If I was single. I'd already be living here:

I've been in a syndicate of 20 people at work for over 10 years and 2 more years at my previous place. Most we have ever won in one go was £75. I don't hold out much hope but you have to be in these things as insurance. If it did hit the big one then everyone else leaves to begin a life of luxury, you're gutted because you declined to be in it, and you end up having to train a whole new bunch of people on your own.

Joe
03-09-2017, 14:13
I bought two lottery tickets when it first started. Neither won me anything, so I thought I'd quit while I was ahead. My father did the pools for thirty-odd years; never won a bean. Saturday evening was always the same - he'd check out the footie scores, saying firstly 'I see Hearts lost', then 'paupers again', throwing the coupon on to the fire.

Macca

I was at one place and ended up getting promoted to a much better job because the previous incumbent left due to a lottery win. So you don't actually have to play to benefit ;)

Seriously though you can't afford not to be in these syndicates. With my luck if I dropped out it would be guaranteed to hit big time the next week. Otherwise I wouldn't bother. Lots of ways to gamble money that are far more exciting.

Lots of ways to gamble money that are far more exciting.

I used to work with a bloke who would periodically fly to the States to gamble at Las Vegas. He wasn't very good at it (if you can be good, as opposed to just lucky at gambling) and ended up losing his job because he drank to drown his gambling sorrows. Although I'm completely risk-averse, I'm also aware that I have a potentially addictive personality. I can see myself waking up penniless in a Vegas hotel having spent my life savings on the slots.

I have, in the past, contributed considerably to the economy of Las Vegas, I must admit. Had a lot of fun doing it though. Ultimately I am too tight-fisted to ever get in over my head, so it has never been an issue for me.

All the gambling industry has ever had from me is two lottery tickets, a few quid on the Grand National when I was a nipper, and a year or so's worth of football pools money just after I started work. Oh, and some money in the slot machine in the pub on Anglesey where we used to go each summer in my early teens. All I've ever won is a few quid when the horse I backed won the Grand National one year, so I'm down a hundred or so quid overall.

If you count poker as gambling then I'm up on the deal by a fair margin. Don't play much anymore, though.

Joe
03-09-2017, 15:38
I last played poker at school, where we used to win each other's dinner money. The poker school came to an abrupt end when 'Crazy' John McGinley kicked in a window in a fit of rage when he lost a lot of money to someone or other. The noise attracted the attention of a passing schoolteacher who confiscated all the winnings and the pack of cards.

Ah, the screws would mostly turn a blind eye to it at my place. Although windows never got broken due to it. They did get broken quite often due to footballs going through them. One shattered over me once. But that was football so it was fine. Rugby was banned, though.

If I won the lottery I would phone up Moon Audio and book a full installation in my new home :)

Then I would contact the forum and mention I now have magnetic bearings and have trumped you all with a half a million pound system....Only Joking :D what do these top systems cost now?

Anyway dont gamble folks beyond the very occassional ticket with odds of 1 in millions. Anything that triggers further gambling is bad. Im so bored of it now I tend to just buy a ticket when they do the extra raffles. Most people could play for a lifetime and never see more than a tenner.

Mark Levinson HQD system with an Apogee Diva / Krell system as backup with a Vandersteen Model 7 / Audio Research Ref combination for the rest of the time.

Common denominator sources would be:

Sansui TU-X1 tuner

I'd not go for a Boxter.

My tastes are more rudimentary. For fun an older Caterham 7 with an old low tech engine with carburettors that I can play with (wonder if a 2.0 twin spark Alfa engine from a 75 with a couple of big Webers could be shoehorned in? :)). For trundling about the countryside with the dog, an ex-military LWB non-turbo Land Rover, in drab matt Army Green would suit. A comfy modern MPV for carting family about too.

Anything overtly ostentatious is a definite NoNo! Regardless of wealth! :nono:

There are underlying truths which almost certainly limit the extent to which Hi-Fi can improve as the technology currently stands.

Let's assume that we pay whatever is needed for; perfect drivers, be it single, two, three or four way, absolutely flat, zero distortion and perfect phase, throughout the Xovers as well.

We still have drivers in a box, spaced apart, with different F ranges coming from different points, feeding us a signal which is itself from a mic, which captures a small angle of forward directed sound which is itself already containing some room effects from the performance room.

These latter compromises themselves are an inherent limitation which will be heard and cannot be overcome even with the above perfection.

So in the real world position we are in, the results of design aspirations are limited by this and are asymptotic to it, and we pay more and more to get nearer the driver perfection, if we are lucky, and if not we get lovely finishes and industrial design jewellery for £ks.

I prefer a 'source first' strategy: ban the idiots from driving in the first place, thus you remove the source of the problem. I agree though, that your way is much more fun! :D

In all seriousness though, the current driving test is way too easy to pass, so lets the idiots through.

We need to make it tougher, designed to promote those with proper driving skills, i.e. folk who can handle their cars safely at speed, drive proficiently in all weather conditions and show awareness and anticipation/fast reactions on the road at all times, not idiots who's intention is simply to use a car as a glorified shopping trolly/school taxi, and dawdle around everywhere at 30mph!

In my experience, it's the clueless, dawdling, indecisive fuckers, who cause most of the problems, especially in town and city centres....

In short, give cars to folk who genuinely LOVE DRIVING (have a passion for it, and prove themselves as CONFIDENT DRIVERS), and who don't just see cars as another mode of transport. Then do the same with bikers and cyclists, and increase their overall proficiency.

In short, whichever mode of transport you decide to buy, you're made to be DAMNED GOOD at handling it FIRST, before getting to use it! That would remove the majority of idiots on our roads at a stroke!!

Marco.

However, one of the best systems I have ever heard (on classical music) was a system at NAS a few years ago the Ensemble room, I would have that system please, including the Ensemble modified Voyd Reference and I could put my Graham Phantom on it - that is what they had fitted - stunning sound.
