California Audio Labs Alpha hybrid valve / tube Dac
Rare 240v version. Plenty on the web about these mid 1990's dacs.
I also have a rebuilt Cal Delta Transport for sale - listing soon.
Superb in stock form however I sent this unit to PartsConnexion in Canada to be upgraded (ex-Sonic Frontiers owners). I've only owned this dac for 11 months but that is actually the longest I've ever owned a dac - it is absolutely superb!
A LOT has been done to this unit:
1) Stock tubes are the 12AX7 variety however this now sports Reliability Controlled matched pair of CK5755's with adaptors.
2) Valve bases upgraded to Audio Note gold plated variety.
3) RCA input (coax) and output connectors now WBT NexGen gold plated copper. These are true 75 ohm construction.
4) Internal digital wiring was swapped out to Illuminati true 75 ohm.
5) 6 diodes swapped out to Telefunken types.
6) Output wiring is pure cast solid core silver with a PTFE wrap.
7) HiFi Tuning Silver Star fuse.
8) Feet upgraded to EAR large variety.
9) 2 x Sparkos opamps (plus new gold plated sockets).
10) 2 x Dexa low noise voltage regulators replacing the cheapo types.
11) 10 x electrolytic capacitors swapped out to Nichicon's.
12) Sound Coat chassis dampening added.
13) 4 resistors in the output stage swapped out to Amtrans AMRG types.
14) Output capacitors now Mundorf Evo Silver/Gold in Oil.
15) Cryo treated IEC input socket.
16) Holes drilled to chassis cover so the Dac runs cooler (was a complaint of the original).
17) Billed 5 hours labour - worth it!
Total mod work was over $700 excluding the shipping and cost of the Dac to start with.
Small foot print - shoe box sizing. Sounds incredible and I'm happy to demo.
These have a big following in the US and a rare find here. As from the mid 90's condition is like 8/10 and the front badge is missing.
Who ever buys this will be well chuffed!
