Front passenger side illegal, driver side 1mm out.
Rear passenger very close to failing, driver side ok.
Need to slow down at roundabouts... :D

So, need a new set of boots.
Going to replace them all and wondering if its worth getting winter tyres?
Never had them before but a car service tech. I know says yup, absolutely, especially for my Alfa.

He says these are the ones to get.

Never had winter tyres, mate, as down here I haven't felt any need. One, it rains rather less here than it did when I lived in Glasgow, and two, I don't drive in very bad conditions, especially when its snowing or really icy.

In your circumstances however, winter tyres seems like a good idea, so I'd give them a go. Pirellis are notorious for wearing quite fast, as the rubber used is softer than norm. Great grip, but they don't last as long as most other premium-branded tyres.

For the best combination of VFM, grip, wear and noise level, my fav tyres now for the Brabster are Goodyear Eagle F1 Asy 2s. Let us know what you do and how you get on :)

Don't go winter tyres mate, go all season!

Got these on my car, they are excellent, and as good in the summer as any other tyre I've had, and a damn sight better than some.

Agree. You need 2 sets of tyres if you go for winter Company I worked for used them but he had a garage too so had storage and his own tyre services. All weather ones probably best

I have these on the wife's X-Trail, but I am yet to see the snow since they were fitted.

The all season tyre will be a compromise on the Alfa though.

I have two complete sets one set for Summer one set for Winter. The winters will be going back on mid October till mid April.

Winters tend to lose there effectiveness once the tread goes below 4mm I change mine when they get to about 3.5mm even tho legally you can run them down to 1.6mm.

Rummaged about a bit online for opinion and after speaking with the service tech (and fellow Alfista) at work and he says the Continental I linked to was the best tyre he ever had in his Alfa 159ti, not a massive drop off even in warmer weather and better than the ones he runs on his 6 series coupe beemer.
Needed to pull the trigger quickly so bought the Continentals.

Camskill and Tyreleader generally offer some of the best prices for tyres; you just need to get someone to fit them for you!

I personally run summer tyres and winter tyres(on older, smaller alloys) on my daily 530i and summer only on my E60 M5 (that stays in a dry lock-up Nov to late spring)!

We drive up to Dunkeld and beyond every Feb, so for me, winter tyres are a must. I'm running 225/55/16 Michelin Alpin A4s and they're superb! Bought them as 'part worn', but what they really were is a set of tyres that someone bought and then realised that most winters are warm & damp and vowed they'd never need to use them again!

Personally for me, with the cold and wet that we DO get (and where I live the crappy country roads and we always get some frost); winter tyres make a lot of sense

Plus, I'd rather run crappy & smaller alloys (which makes tyre prices cheaper) than damage my summer tyres and alloys etc!

Tell me about it mate, with the Brabster! 19-inch rims rool, though. For me, they look so much better (with super-low profile tyres), than 18s. Enjoy! :cool:

I may be about to go for some new tyres - though I'm hoping to sneak all my current set through the upcoming MOT first to squeeze a few more weeks out of the treads before the winter sets in.

Last time I bought from a mobile supplier - Event Tyres - and they were quite good, and got the specific tyres I chose, but I don't think they work in the parts of Scotland where some of you guys live. Alternatively a local tyre store where I had the tyres checked has offered to get some of the same tyres at a comparable price, so I might go to them instead.

£50 for a new pair of front tyres this morning...Only an 01 Matiz Thats getting towards the end of her days but im sure she will keep smoking to her next MOT next august...Fun little things matizs :lol: cheap motors too..

My car did get through the MOT, though with a few advisories, including two tyres which I supected and was prepared to replace. In the end I did have them replaced, as it seemed to me that I was being offered the tyres I wanted at a reasonable - and competitive price (£120 each), but what was slightly worrying was the comment about some of the original tyres being older than I believed. Actually that's not too terrible as they were the fairly good pair I had three years ago, but I was somewhat sceptical about the information provided. Allegedly tyres all have codes which indicate when they were made, and it seems to me possible that some "new" ones might actually be kept "on the shelf" for years before being fitted, and consequently deteriorating even before they go on any vehicle.

The price of trying to keep mobile, I suppose!

There's a date code on tyres, but the pre fitted perishing ( tongue in cheek ) on new tyres is a clue to shelf age. Lucky you don't live in Germany, they are/were legally bound to replace all 4 at the same time which is why you see so many part worn continentals for sale ( pardon the pun ).

having spent a number of years swapping to winter tyres in november , although it was very effective , i looked at all weather tyres .

settled on the michelin cross climate which has excellent reviews . i found i got a massive discount just by booking in advance with kwikfit . saved a fortune and although not had a chance yet with snow they are good in the wet

The rubber in tyres doesn't last these days for some reason (deliberate?). My back tyres are showing slight cracking on the sides due to perishing. They'll have to go soon and only done 13k miles. They were on the car when I bought it new three and a bit years ago.

What happens if one tyre otherwise almost brand new gets written off because of a nail or some other problem? Do you need a permit or dispensation to just get one tyre?

I think the UK is pretty mad/bonkers much of the time, but that would be ludicrous.
