shall we do a sweepstake on the cost?

I reckon 15 large USD for the motor unit, and with plinth pushing 20

they have serious balls now with their pricing, and this will not be high volume.

I agree, unless one literally fell into my hands - how much better can it really get for what they will want to charge for this. I mean, I could keep my SP10mk2/sh10b3/sme V and put an extension on the house or something like that? Maybe even a new BMW??

If its sane money, and I fear it won't be, then I could be very tempted.

I think the area where they've moved their tech forward (certainly with the 1200 re-vamps) is that of the motor control & giving a much smoother drive to the rotating platter. There's certainly room for improvement in that area with the SP10 Mk2 aswell. It'll be interesting to see what Technics propose for a 21st century plinth & also to see what these standalone units actually sell for.

A well fettled sp10mk2 with heavy tenuto mat is hard to beat .

I may be wrong, but they'll be selling to a boutique market now as the broadcast one is probably long gone. The few that'll want one will be wealthy oligarch types I suspect who will pay the money as if it's short change. It'll go well with the Naim Statement amp and Wilson Audio speakers I suspect...

I think it will be difficult for Technics to improve on the sp10 - 2/3 by a magnitude of difference. Torque may be higher but a MK3 or MK2 with something like a tenuto mat is very very difficult to stop unless excessive force is used. Just how strong is needle drag? Silent running will also be difficult to beat as even with a stethoscope a well sorted MK2 or 3 is absolutely silent, not even a hiss.

So, will this next level of engineering improve on an already flawless performance? I doubt it - from the viewpoint of the listener - but do I want one when I already have one of their best? Of course - I'm an audiophile afterall!

fletchdirect
31-08-2017, 08:54
Unless it will be a five figure sum, most of the guts of this must be 80% the G/GAE model, but heavier platter? As it won't sell the volumes of the SP10MK2 due to the broadcast market being dead now, I can't see how they could possibly develop something awesome and bespoke for this model. It must be based on the G/GAE. Am aching to see the rest of the range - can we expect a SH-10R plinth and EPA-100R tonearm? How about an EPC-100R cartridge????

The biggest selling point for me is that it won't be surrounded by (most likely out of spec, sub-optimally functioning) 40+ year old electronics! *That* is the only reason why, so far, I've not bought an SP10.

The thought of having one of the finest engineered motor units ever built for a turntable, surrounded by all-new (and perhaps improved) circuitry, then popping it into a nice plinth, with my existing Ortofon RS-212D arm, is more than mildly pant-wetting... ;)

Marco. If you are going own plinth route for one, then you have to do it Artisan Fidelity good or not bother. I'm not saying use them, as it is impractical given their location and likely cost, but you catch my drift.

Then just forget and die with it. Job done.

Don't worry, our minds are in tune! Since when have you known me to do anything by half? ;)

However, first things first... Let's see what the actual price of the motor unit is going to be, then if I can justify it, I'll find somewhere where I can get a listen to one (in whatever plinth is being used), and we'll take it from there

It may be you can't buy the motor unit anyway. Will probably be sold with a plinth.

Marco
31-08-2017, 19:59
That's fine. I'm sure the plinth would be more than half decent; certainly good enough to allow me to judge the motor unit, and take it from there.

If the cost of the 'complete package' is acceptable, then (if necessary) the plinth could always be upgraded to 'Artisan Fidelity level', or similar, at a later date :)

I suspect the motor will be $12,000 and the Motor/plinth/arm about $20,000.

An interesting link to measurements of various Technics DD tables, starting at #329 http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/analogue-source/309349-turntable-speed-stabilty-7.html#post5180497

Compare the Mk3 to the -1200GAE, it's rather illuminating. I suspect the SP-10R will be as good or better than the Mk3.

Also worth note, Scott Wurcer is working in that thread to make a good standard for measuring TT polars.

Well, they were never going to be giving them away. it's a serious chunk of cutter for a record player. And you need to buy a tonearm and cartridge as well. And a phono stage good enough to do it justice.

Probably still better value than the mega-priced bling decks, though. But out of my reach.

I would think that a company like Technics expect to sell a lot of these so would not charge crazy prices. Clearly, there is a lot of precision engineering going on here but I would be very surprised if it sells for more than $10k and possibly even around $7k! Wishful thinking, perhaps?

A lot of beans indeed.

My approach would have been exactly as you did it Oliver, if I ever had gone SP10. As that for me is where the genuine value is to be had and the smart money would go.

Watch prices for the MK2 and 3 rocket with the attention around this one coupled with its big price tag.

People who dont properly know like us will get to realise how good and good value an original in good shape could be.

The SP10 was always a top deck just needing a good arm and cart and not much else really.

I also dont believe the new one will be a great, big, large (however you choose to put it) degree better sonically, it will be as good as the original or a little better but no where near where you're starting point for deck only is £9K as pretty as she might be, all in my opinion of course

The price of the SP10R is going to greatly impact the SP10mk3 the most. If you can get a new Sp10r for £7-10k, who's gonna pay that for an old MK3?

The MK3 btw is very difficult to repair so I'm told. No issues with the MK2 as it's all completely replaceable components. Can't do that with a MK3

Found a firm online who re-finish the metalwork of the SP10. £190 and can be left in the finish as intended from the factory or painted any colour you like. It's a good step if you can pick up an old one with a bit of cosmetic wear. Keeps the price down.

My fear realized, not going to be worth that, sorry rip off price I feel if that's just the motor. Now complete package, motor, arm, plinth, maybe that is justified, maybe not.

I am pretty happy with my AMG Giro, so not mad keen on buying a SP10 new or old.

I have owned pretty much all of the Japanese direct drives and many thread driven turntables. One thing that I found to be most important was platter mass.

Interestingly the older SP10mk3 platter weighs in at 10kg, 3kg and almost 50% more than the latest release. My bets are on the mk3 holding value and increasing once people find out that performance is at least equal to the SP10R.

Mk2 values could increase, especially seeing the price tag of the SL 1200G at £3000.

Plinth makers will be rubbing their hands together! Interesting times.

Bigman80
15-11-2017, 18:14
Funny you should mention platter mass, an SP10 MK2 with Tenuto is not far off an SP10 MK3. I'm told the concerning think with MK3 SP10s is the electronics are extinct and once dead remain dead. I can't remember the actual part but it's long gone. If it goes the SP10 MK3 is dead in the water. As with all things I expect there is a work-around but you've got to find it and then find someone competent enough to carry it out. The smart money goes on an SP10 MK2, platter and plate refurb (£190) getting it serviced and placed in a Panzerholz plinth. Oh, new power supply too.

Prices out now.

The deck on its own, motor, PSU $10000 Motor Unit, PSU, Plinth + tonearm $20000

The Technics rep revealed that all Technics decks motor units are hand built, by Technics in Japan.

I think $10000 for the motor, for what it is, seems to me to be a tad too expensive, and the full package seems even more over priced.

To some extent yes but £2500 is taking the piss, I think originally the seller had it up for £3200, the fact it hasn't sold says something.

I wouldn't pay that, would rather get a 1200G or simply something else like a gyro or something similar.

Why? I would have thought the opposite. If I was in the market I would get the 10R over an old 10, and a 1200GR over any old 1200. At £1100 for a brand new GR with better motor, bearing and platter I can't see why anyone would pay current asking prices for a used SL1200 let alone NOS ones.

They've been trickling up forever, all decks have.

If people upgrade via dealers to the new ones expect 2nd hand prices to rise, if they just sell them privately and take the cash to upgrade expect the prices to drop.

Very impressive thing and an excellent review of it.

Can facilitate multiple arms and so on but the top version is about £20k .....

Not true - the SP-10R motor unit and PSU retails in the UK at £7995 including VAT. The SL-1000R, eg the complete deck with plinth and tonearm is £13995 including VAT. Technics have made the SP-10R motor unit backwards compatible with old SP-10 plinths, so if someone already has something like a lovely Technics Obsidian SP-10 plinth, then only the new motor unit (and a tonearm) is required, and that makes the SP-10R potentially better value.

I don't sell Technics, btw. This pricing information is not difficult to find online.

No idea of all the exact figures for pricing perpertations or pricing accuracy HFN have given.

My comments stated £20K for top version which is the SP10R supplied with plinth, arm etc.

In that guise it becomes the SL - 1000R which I should have made clear.

Quote HFN June 2018 edition review, page 34, second paragraph

'Two years on from the launch of the superb SL-1200GAE (HFN Jun '16), the brand is back with a flagship broadcast standard turntable worthy of the name.
The SP-10R is the motor unit, and when supplied in its bespoke plinth with Technics' new tonearm, the package becomes the 'Reference Class' SL-1000R, and sells for a cool £20,000.'

Ammonite Audio
30-05-2018, 17:50
HFN should have checked their copy before publication because it’s simply wrong - the 20k figure that they incorrectly state is probably the US dollar price. The fact remains that Technics’ UK retail pricing is, at £13995, well below £20k for the SL-1000R.

Still a substantial difference between that and the cost of a well-sorted SP10 though. Even a mark 3 with a top bollocks arm and plinth.

Don't get me wrong if I had money to burn I'd go for the new one every time. But if I was stretching it to afford the new one I'd have a good think about it, and a listen of the two of them, before I ponied up the dough for the new one.

Would be interesting but I'm still in no doubt that if you shopped clever and copped hold of an SP10 MK2, properly serviced with a very nice arm and quality mc on it you'd possibly not be missing much against the new one.

Of course that's just my own gut feeling balanced with the SPPV you'd be getting with the SP10 MK2 against the cost of the new, but what do I know ? :)
