OK, having experienced the joy of hi-res music last night, and seeing that I can play it via my iMac without needing a pesky SACD player, I'm now trying to find out if it's possible to extract DVD-A to files which my Mac can play.

There seem to be a reasonable number of DVD-A discs available and I'm wondering if I can buy them and rip the HD audio to a FLAC file?

Views?

There is a program called DVDA Explorer which can read the MLP files on a DVD-A disc and extract them. Google it.

I use Squeezebox to access to all 4 Hi-Res albums I have on DVD-A. Foobar2000 is equally as good.

Most music DVD's (DVD-V by definition) have 16/48 as bit/sample rate, although occasionally you'll come across one which is 24/48.

There's DVD Audio Ripper, too, afaik.

That works fine on DVD-V stuff, but it won't touch the MLP files on DVD-A discs.
I've used both sets of software.

Ah ok, thanks Chris. So DVD AR is for video audio only. :)

Unfortunately so. You can download a fully working version for trial, so if you're organised.......;):eyebrows:

I've used DVD-A explorer to rip all 2 of my DVD-Audio discs. R.E.M.'s "Reveal" which ripped fine on the Mac (but isn't a very good album either in content or sound quality) and Queen's "A night at the opera" (which sounds marvellous) but DVD-A explorer on the Mac didn't want to read this one for some reason. It seems that the Mac version is a little flaky. I managed to get it to rip without any trouble on the Windows version though.

Whilst your getting into Hi-res material and if you have access to a Windows PC, check your CD collection for HDCD discs and if you have any, get hold of a copy of HDCD.exe, then rip the discs as WAV and pass them through the HDCD decoder. The few discs I have (and not all of them are marked with the HDCD logo) sound very nice indeed.

There is this for any Windows users:

I think it's only for video discs too. I've used it in the past but can't remember. Let me check.

What about HDCD on a mac?

I don't believe there is any software on the Mac to expand HDCD rips to get the extra resolution out of them.

That's why I've been doing the rips on a Windows machine, performing the expansion, then transferring the resulting 24-bit audio files over to my Mac which can then be enjoyed via iTunes.

Crap. That means I'm going to have to reinstall a Windows partition on my iMac....

Rich, I have a few HDCD's and I have an old PC, but they'll never work through the AE will they, even if I add a DAC?

They'll play, but they'll get down-converted to 16-bit. You'd have to be playing directly out of the Mac into a DAC to get the full bit depth.

I went looking for DVD Audios (I've had some in the past - sometimes cheaper than the equivalent CD) - http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=dvd+audio+naxos&tag=googhydr-21&index=music&hvadid=9008325886&ref=pd_sl_wdbk2z3qw_b#/ref=sr_pg_3?rh=n%3A229816%2Ck%3Advd+audio+naxos&page=3&keywords=dvd+audio+naxos&ie=UTF8&qid=1321013368 - there are some.

I also noticed some Blu Ray audio discs in the lists. Is it also possible to rip those?
One would need a Blu Ray drive - as most computers are still only using CD or DVD/CD drives.

Someone once sent me a link to a piece of software called DVD-A Explorer (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/DVD-Audio-Explorer). I haven't tried it yet, but might be worth looking into.
