Are those marques I mentioned ever subject to forgeries, or is it only Rolex?

Yes but not to the same extent.

I have the same one, Omega Planet Ocean Seamaster.

I do Alex, still going strong then? Looks the part.

Selling some diver’s watches if you’re interested?

Alex_UK

Yes, still going strong and had a few compliments, although one of my building contractor clients said “if you can afford a watch like that you can afford to knock a few grand off the premiums!” he refused to believe it wasn’t mega expensive! I wear it quite a lot actually, and still really like it.

I might be tempted on another purchase…. Although along with the Sekonda I posted a few days ago I have also bought a “smart” smartwatch (stainless and stainless bracelet) as well as another sportier smartwatch in the past few weeks. I bought a case that holds 10 watches not realising it was already way oversubscribed!

Can you play 'Space Invaders' on it?

Not investigated it but I think there are some games on it - I was never very good at Space Invaders anyway.

Joking aside, the cheap smartwatches are incredible for how much they cost (this was about £40) and the mind boggles at what they will do in 5 or 10 years time…

Says on the screen that you'd only done 100 steps - so was the kick about with your lad the smart watch's idea, because that would be really smart :)

Barry

It could be 1,100 steps - the leading digit, if shown, is obscured by the minute hand.

Alex_UK
10-05-2024, 07:04
Ha ha, I think it was 1,100 - but combined with the other smartwatch that I switched too when I got home I did around 8,000 steps which is a typical day when I don’t get the chance to actually go for a walk.

This is the other one - no ambiguity with this face!

It a 20 quid watch - I don’t think the heart rate monitor is very accurate, but running around juggling getting two kids packed lunches, uniforms, feeding the dog and hurdling car boot detritus…

And no, the ‘11’ is my PacMan score!

Pigmy Pony

Whenever my heart rate is checked, it's always between high fifties and low sixties, which I think is a bit slow. But when I asked the nurse doing my blood pressure about it she said it's fine.

I got a smart watch from Anita two Christmases ago, I really should get round to setting it up. Though if it tells me I'm not doing enough it'll be going in the bin. I get enough of that already.

I'm old enough to remember when 'Steps' were just some dance group.

Someone ask me the other day how many steps I do. No idea, I measure my walking distances in miles.

No-one is interested in my Pac Man score but I was number one for a bit on the machine in the 'Golden Goose' on LLandudno pier.

That was a while back now though.

Barry

I think a typical heart rate is around 70 bpm.

I'm hypertensive, managed by medication. Occasionally I will check my BP which also displays heart rate. Mine is usually around 70.

(Just measured it: 144/83, 60bpm)

Alex_UK
11-05-2024, 11:10
I had to do 2 weeks BP heart rate monitoring after an MOT at the doctors - all was fine, sitting at my desk now 68 bpm.

Great PacManning there, Martin I'm impressed if no one else is!

I got one of those Arcade Pro consoles but for some unknown reason my reflexes don't seem to be as good as they were when I was 12. I can't do as well on Galaxians either.

Still good at Donkey Kong though!

surely it depends on your stride? If your stride is a yard that's 1760 steps in a mile.

I am hypertensive too ,and have'nt been taking any medication ,(mainly because I hate any tablets )but being an old git of 67 ,the doctor wants me to consider a low dose I think.
We will see what develops when I talk to him tomorrow about it !

I had a hernia repair four weeks ago and the aneasthetist had a short chat to me after the op ,just saying how my bp stayed up quite high during it ,and she wanted me to think about meds even though she knew I wasnt keen !!
I can typically get 130/85 , 129/79 138 /85 at rest but it can go up to 165/175 over 90 when I am at docs or where-ever.
One of the joys of getting old :)

On topic , my fake Rolex Submariner ,wont run all the time and stops (probably why it ended up at a charity shop ) I had the back off by putting some double sided tape on the flat of it and then putting a brass cartridge case on other side and off it screwed !
Completely fake ,but I released the crown stem and the crown inner is chewed out , but interesting to study . Can alter the time with a small pair of snipe pliars anyway
Nothing ventured so sprayed it with Servisol switch cleaner and let it dry and that made it speed up lol ,before it settled back down ,and then stopped

You can tell I am a farmer - Jack of all trades - And master of absolutely none

I found my long-lost snide Omega Seamaster (genuine fake from Turkey) yesterday. I thought it was self-winding, so was assuming it's just broken. But Anita thinks it will have a battery. Not that it makes any difference, I can't get into it anyway. And now I've bent the bezel trying

Bit annoying really, I've only had it 20 years. You'd think a thirty quid fake Omega watch would last better than that.

Take it back for a refund next time you're over there.

If I ever return to Mexico I'll be getting my fifteen bucks back. If I can remember which of the 800 shops selling fake watches I got it from.

The Laco’s quite nice, the day before not to my taste, but if you like it, you like it and doesn’t make any difference what I or anyone else thinks!

I quite like the one with the additional 24 hour marks, I always type times in 24 hour format, and it is easy enough to just add the 12 hours but I think it’s different to have both on the face.

Yes - it's a Blacklist 'Streetmatic' SM028. They can be had for around £250, if you are interested.

I like it - it does all one needs in a wristwatch, though I would prefer the version with a matching black seconds rim: the SM027.

My information came from the Blacklist site, which also stated that none of the Streetmatic models were currently in stock. I got the impression that if there was sufficient interest Blacklist might consider re-supply.

Nothing at all.

But I have much more pride of ownership in my little examples of horological art than my g-shocks.

Value wise also quartz watches, for the most part, are almost throw away whereas when I move even my Ali Express specials on via ebay they mostly get their money back.

I much prefer a self winder, especially if it’s a watch you don’t wear very often (which I dare bet Roy has more than a few!) nothing worse than going to put a watch on and the battery has given up the ghost (ok, lots worse, first world problem…)

For my battery watches I get them done at Timpsons with the lifetime guarantee - pay a bit more once, but then free replacements for ever.

Get mine done by the watch bloke down the market. It's only a few hundred yards away and I have to force the money on him as he always says 'no charge.'

A few questions:

What are the differences between "Quartz" and "automatic" watches? Or are they the same thing? Why do some watches call themselves "chronometer"? Any makes/models/sellers that need to be avoided, especially if buying secondhand? Thinking along the lines of something like this:

https://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Omega/De%20Ville%20Prestige/424.10.37.20.03.001/27383/item/304209

Basically quartz = battery operated, automatic = mechanical and wound via a rotor whilst being worn.

A chronometer should have certified accuracy.

If buying second hand look for reviews / feedback about the seller to establish if they're 'trusted'.

Nice Omega but I'd expect box and papers and I don't know how big your wrist is but the De Ville is quite a small watch at 37mm.

As far as makes are concerned you really get what you pay for, look on youtube at some of the watch channels - for affordable watches in particular check out 'Just one more watch' for a bit of inspiration. Avoid fashion brands like Armani, Michael Korrs etc.

A lot of people frown at Invictas but for £70 odd quid you can get a decent diver's watch with a Seiko movement.

I do have quite large wrists and my hands are like shovels, so I could get away with a large watch, but I'm not too keen on diver's watches. They just have too much of everything for my tastes, I prefer simple.

I like this one a lot, but really I'm some way off affording one. I'll check out some of your less costly options, like the Invictas.

Cheers Roy - I've just been checking out these 'Presage' models, and some I really like. I was quite surprised at the prices asked, it puts them into "Christmas pressie from Anita" category, which will keep my hifi/music budget free :D

I might be pestering you for guidance nearer the time, hope you don't mind - as you may remember, my last watch (3 years ago) was a Mickey Mouse watch, which couldn't accommodate a strap large enough for me, and is now lying around waiting for one of the grandkids to grow into it

You could buy a half-decent house for that amount - and it would be a lot more useful.

It certainly doesn't impress me - but spending the money on a vintage Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantan, Audemars Piguet, etc. would. And it wouldn't cost as much.

My next watch was a Rolex. From 'Timex to Rolex' has a nice ring to it.

I still have the Seiko watch that my parents gave to me in 1983 for my 21st.

Brought up in a working class family, the £35 that it cost then was a fortune.

I wore it most days until after 30 yrs it packed in and a clockmaker-skilled neighbour put a new mechanism in it.
That modern mech has failed after 10 years. Foolishly, I bought a mech and took the hands off, but was unable to rebuild it. D'Oh
Any recommendations where to send it as my neighbour has stopped repairs as he's 20 years past retirement!!

Much appreciated.

You could ask your local branch of Timpsons if they can recommend a watch repairer. Or if the new mechanism was another Seiko movement, then try a jeweler who sells Seiko watches.

Back in the 90s when I bought an amp from Musical Fidelity, I used to get frequent communications from them by post, which included a Christmas card every year, and regular newsletters promoting various products Including various designs of wristwatch. Some of the designs I thought were a bit 'out there', and I never bothered.

But now I'm thinking I may go for one, and it's a toss up between two of their more conventional looking efforts.

How much they sell them for?

Found a used version of the white one on ebay for £250 odd and I think it's overpriced at that. Quartz rather than automatic and a sterling silver case (why?).

There are plenty of Seikos out there that are far better value for money.

How about something like this?

All of the Mobile Fidelity watches are limited edition, originally to celebrate MF's 25th anniversary by their new owners in Austria. It seems the new owners have 'a thing' about quality watches: MF sold a set of headphones with "Vacheron Constantan" marked on the cups, and the case of the 25th anniversary watch was modeled on a design by Cartier.

Being limited edition items they sell for more than they should. Some sell for around £250, yet others only fetch £12 in auction.

As to who makes them for MF, well that's anyone's guess: not even MF employees know, though Seiko is a popular specification.

Me - I'm waiting for the QUAD 57 watch; a limited edition run of only 55 items. Sadly though, Quad now being own by a consortium based in Hong Kong, the movement is likely to be Chinese.

Those MF watches originally sold for about £80 new iirc, so no way would I have paid that much anyway. I'm not a fan of divers' watches or anything 'chunky'. But that one you linked to I do like, and Anita would be much happier buying me a new one than something old and with the potential to pack up tomorrow.

You've found me one I could live with there, I'd assumed they would be more expensive than that.

Of course [emoji6].

I’m intrigued by how you’re supposed to pronounce ‘Rolex’ other than how everybody says it?

Rolex phased out the 'Cellini' range in 2022, leaving only one model in their catalogue. It is speculated that with an increasing interest in dress watches, Rolex may be pausing and will offer a new range of designs sometime soon.

Having had a look at the Cellini designs still available used, I agree that the very great majority of them come with black leather straps. But a very few had mesh-chain bracelets.

As to the correct pronunciation of Rolex, being based in Geneva, a francophone part of Switzerland, the name ought to be pronounced "row-licks", but no-one I know does so.

I see some are automatic, some quartz, even saw one that was solar yesterday! Me and Mrs. P are looking at options for my birthday pressie, and I value your judgement.

Roy S
09-11-2024, 13:53
For longevity I’d go for an automatic movement, the workhorse Seiko NH35A being a well used one by many manufacturers with reasonable accuracy and mostly good value.

Quartz watches are convenient because they’re always ready to go straight out of the box but if you go the auto route and wear your watch all the time that doesn’t matter.

Solar watches should last forever but I’ve known them fail. Citizen eco drives are well established in this category.

Watch some YouTube watch gurus to get a better idea of what’s available - the mad watch collector and just one more watch are ok. If you come across something you like the look of search the yt videos, chances are someone’s reviewed it!

Barry
23-11-2024, 15:20
They are far more accurate in their timekeeping than mechanical watches, but need a battery which are not cheap. However if you buy them from Timpsons, where for a little more money all future batteries are fitted for free.

What's up with quartz watches Roy? Genuine question. I've been avoiding them but don't know why.

Nothing per se, as Barry says they are far more accurate than their mechanical counterparts.

I actually have a fair number of Casios and G Shocks in my collection, it’s just a faff changing the batteries when you need to. My most recent quartz purchases have been solar powered so, theoretically, they’ll never need a battery change but time will tell about their longevity.

Timpsons are quite expensive for battery changes, they have an online service for this and the quoted charge for a G Shock is £65.95! When you consider the batteries are pennies to buy that’s rather steep.

I know you’re supposed to get mechanical watches serviced periodically but, personally, I never bother. I still have a Citizen I got for my 18th birthday, some 47 years ago which still keeps good time.
