I have a pair of Dynaudio Audience 42's.

They are place roughly 6ft apart and around 8ft from listening position. They're about 50cm in from the back wall, although I had all my cd racks against the back wall so this space was reduced down to about 35cm, and 30cm on from the side wall. In accordance with the instructions that came with them, I had the port bungs in.

I've removed my cd racks as I'm re-ripping them all, and while I was back there I removed the port bung. Wow, the bass extension was immediately improved!

I don't know anything about room acoustics and why speakers even have port bungs and how to get the best from them, so if anyone could explain that'd be great.

Cheers

I have used my audience 42's in 3 houses 4 rooms with quite a few different systems and not once did I find then sounding better with the bungs in. I just guessed they were included incase you had a over bassy amp or the speakers were to be put way out into the room?? Bloody good speakers to be fair.. I prefered them to both the next pairs ferther up in the range

Yes, Rich (Lovejoy) told me they'd be even better if I add an 8000P power amp.

If a speaker is designed properly and has a 'hole' in it, then that is how it should be used. Putting in a bung will reduce bass and may increase distortion. You've done the right thing by removing it.

The port is there to reproduce low bass frequencies, ideally it comes in as the output of the main bass driver rolls off, augmenting low bass output. With the bungs in place you reduce the amount of bass it can output.

So removing the bung will give you half an octave to an octave more bass.

The downside is that you may come to find that the bass is a little 'softer' overall and that bass timing is no longer as good as it was although if the 'speaker is well designed these effects shoudl be very minor.

having the CD racks behind the 'speaker should not nake much difference, the 'speaker will still 'see' the back wall of the room through the racks.

Thanks guys. Well, I've removed the racks anyway. My CDs are being stored away soon.

The bungs are out and the sound is much better for it. :)
