I may regret this but another interest is taking more of my time these days. For sale my gorgeous Denon DP 80 in perfect working order with Stax UA-70 12" arm, Shure Ultra 500 cart in a Martin Bastin body and copper mat.

This photo is from about 3 o'clock to show the arm mount on the 25mm thick aluminium sub plinth.
I would like to sell it complete so £2000 all in. Demo welcome. I will not post this turntable.

thanks fellas, for those wishing to use their own cartridge of choice, I will sell without the lovely Shure Ultra 500, £1500 collect or meet.
The Ultra is not for sale without the turntable.

Hi Paul,

I was sort of interested in this TT as a second turntable but I am a bit confused with the price drop (without the shure ultra 500 cartridge). Are you really saying this is a £500 cartridge, as I can find no info relating to this price?

Confused?

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk£500 is about the going rate for an Ultra if you can find one. This has a Martin Bastin body and jico stylus. I used a Benz wood SL until I got the Ultra. You must have a very impressive turntable if you were thinking of buying the denon as a second turntable.

Thanks for the update Paul, I sort of understand now.

Yes, my TT is the Townsend Rock 7 / Merlin PS / SME V / Decca London Jubilee Reference. Second cart is a Decca Super Gold, Third Cart is the Benz Wood SL. " sorry, but love em all".

All very different but in a lovely musical way.[emoji736]

Just looking for a TT not Front end damped for a bit of a comparison [emoji41] (sorry, but not had another make TT in the last 50 years) a bit sad I know...... All Townsend models though the years.

Paul, PM me if still of interest. I have a few questions to ask, prior to a deal.

No problems if you have other potential buyers.

Wow! The plinth is amazing! Who made it? Was thinking of doing a similar DIY one for my DP-2000.

The arm is pretty cool as well though surprised it works with the Shure Ultra I'd have expected to be matching it with something of much lower compliance.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkI did, ply with rosewood veneer and solid rosewood legs. Aluminium sub plinth water jet cut to my design and arrived so rough I spent hours sanding and then a friend polished it.

I tried a Decca super gold on the arm and it through a wobbly reacting badly to the snare drum on a Roy Orbison song. It was cured by some putty between the cart and headshell.
The Shure sounds better than Benz wood sl I used on it before. Its quite a versatile arm to be fair.

Paul, just so you can have a bit of a gloat[emoji41]

I have dumped the Orb SE and found a Denon DP80 in mint condition. We all make mistakes in life and unfortunately I made a big mistake in not following up your sale. !!!

Anyway, I'm on a journey now to get something super.

Glad you kept your kit and made me sort myself out.

Happy days.

Great news Peter, let me know what you think. Do you have a step down transformer, if not air link transformers do a plug in one for not much money and does the job. Do you need a plinth or did it come with one?

Boyse6748

Hi Paul , got and airlink step down transformer.

However, no plinth so it's either a custom build or a DIY job. Looked at a few companies willing to do the job and they look really nice.

I did get offered both the DK2300 & the DK300 but they both fell through.

So's it keep looking for now, unless you know different. Also need a decent armboard for the Dynavector DV507 MkII

Looking for what Peter? I'm not keen on those fruit box type rectangular plinths. Mine is based on a plinth from DIY audio. Check out " monsterizing a denon dp80 " There were two threads on DIY audio, the first was designed by the member on there and machined by an engineering company in Athens, who now sells the plinth, silly money. The second I believe was still machined by the same company but was a one off for a client in HongKong. Mine is a budget ply version modified to my taste with a sub plinth to bolt the arm pod in position and not rely on weight. Interested to see what type of plinth you go with.

Yes indeed, looked at all those decks and yours is especially nice. However, I'm not up to that expertise. So it's going to have to be a fruit box as you call it, but there are some guys in Germany that will do me a special in piano black that looks good. ( no, more than good)

Nothing will ever replace the Rock 7, so this is a second deck project. Just trying do do my best.[emoji736]

The Denon is quite an easy deck to make a plinth for. I did one for my JVC, a similar flying saucer shape. Not as beautiful as Paul's but hopefully not a fruit box :)

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalksome have said the denons sounded bland and blamed the fruit box plinths. I don't agree and put that down to the lesser denons being the problem. My DP80 sounded great just resting in the plinth and not fixed.

Ian, that looks very pretty and professionally finished.
Obviously as this is a second TT what would you recommend.... DIY or professional build.

At the moment and although I have "not to scale plinth cutout drawings" do you know of any scale drawings that I might be able to download. Very difficult to find.

Obviously, I have the deck here, so can measure everything but turning that into a cad drawing is not my bag.

I'm beginning to get a bit more info and some individuals that are willing to build this plinth..... something like Paul's would be fab... but not to be.(far too expensive)

It will have to be a fruit box design [emoji7] hopefully in Piano Black or High Gloss Veneer.

I can get all the CNC cutting done locally, but they insist on CAD drawings, which I don't have.

Just for info, this will eventually be paired with a Dynavector DV507 Mk II arm.

Any pearls of wisdom. Or it's back to the professionals.

I don't think this is too difficult to DIY as basically it's a series of boards with a couple of holes in, one for the deck, one for the arm. My build is here plus a couple of other experiments I made on the way. Maybe you should start a fresh thread about your build.

http://www.lencoheaven.net/forum/index.php?topic=24701.0

In the end I used Multiplex MU25 beech ply which is somewhere between ordinary ply and Panzerholtz in density but a lot cheaper than the latter!

http://www.ltlewis.co.uk/beech.htm

As to CAD drawings, for speakers I've built I've used Timbmet locally and they were always happy with a scale drawing showing clear dimensions so maybe you can find somewhere similar if you decide to go down this route. I'd still say it is more fun doing it yourself and you can always practise on something cheaper to get dimensions right.

Cheers, Ian

Peter, it doesn't have to be a fruit box, I'm sure Ian's is solid in layers. The denon plinths are usually hollow with just the top to sit the turntable in. I made thin ply templates to mark out the ply layers of mine. I only needed two different cut outs. You can have layers cut out and glued together in a rectangle with a cut out for a removeable arm board.

The Denon DP 80 Plinth

Well, four weeks to go..... it ain’t going to be a fruit box. Probably some 20/25kg of mixtures.

Acrylic/ Derlin / Ply / Lead / MDF / Alloy base.... if it works , wonderful. If it don’t, it was worth the adventure.

Can’t see why it wouldn’t work... all materials are high mass / high Damping properties. Mind you I’m not a TT designer.

We shall see !!!!

Watch this space......or not[emoji31]

Not to be boring, but I did say I would send a couple of photo’s of the Denon Plinth.

The plinth is still with the builder (not due until the end of the week)

But this how it has panned out.....

Top plate - Acrylic 12mm
Under plate - Derlin 25mm
Two layers of Birch Ply 25mm each
Bottom layer - MDF 18mm

Feet are Magnetic Levitation

Arm Board Acrylic ( adjustable for all arms up to 12”)

Just looking for a decent dust cover.

The arm cartridge combo will be the Dynavector DV507Mk II / Benz Wood SL

Hoping it will blow my Rock 7 to pieces (so I can sell one or the other)

We will see !

Provided you've got a good turntable I don't believe the weight is important, maybe just reassuring. Mine sounded great just sat in the plinth not screwed down.
