I've been watching out for a certain boxed set and thanks to the good nature of a fellow member was alerted to one on eBay at a good price of 195£ described as brand new and sealed. I bought it and paid for it and have just received an email from the seller to say that as he's shipping it abroad he's removed the vinyl (x3) so it will be safer! Surely it would be better in its original box, then in another box? And if course now it isn't sealed and might never have been! I guess all I can do is wait - some people are either stupid or twisted.

Personally I'd cancel the transaction before he sends it as the item won't be as described, a lot of collectors put great value on stuff never been opened .I suppose if you're going to actually use it and it turns up mint then it's not so bad,I think it might niggle me though just on principal.

A lot of sellers remove the vinyl from the cover to prevent the ring marks on the covers if the package gets compressed.

The best sellers I use for secondhand LPs seem to prefer this method.

If you are planning to play them anyway I don't see a problem.

Pretty sure the LPs will still be in the same box just not in their covers, unless of course he's sending you his own played set. If you've paid via PayPal then no worries you're covered for any issues upon receipt.

You paid for "brand new and sealed" and that's not what you are getting. If that is troubling, you should cancel ASAP. If it is opened, it could have been used.

This. I totally get the point of removing the inners with second hand vinyl as it prevents ring marks but this should not be necessary with a new box.

Shipping with the records outside of the sleeve prevents seam splits. I usually request this where possible but some people don't listen and then are shocked when it arrives split! Of course, the seller really should only do this upon request because some people do keep their records sealed.

would appear they were already open. no-one would open a sealed boxset and remove records for shipping. in 50 years collecting ive never heard of it

Bizzare what's the point of owning a record if you don't play it?

But if you buy new you should have the pleasure/confidence of opening it yourself.

COLLECTORS OFTEN DONT OPEN THEM. others as said above want to do it themselves

Well I've bought it to play it not to keep it sealed but I've been bitten before so am naturally wary. The seller has promised they are unplayed and accepts that they are no longer as described but they have been sent. He has 100% feedback with over 400 positive feedbacks so I guess I'm just gonna have to trust him. At £195 it's going back if I have any doubt.

For a single LP I've been asked whether I want the LP removing from the sleeve so it's doesn't burst the sleeve (as often happens). For a box set I'm not so sure but maybe the risk of bursts is even higher due to the weight involved. It's always best to ask to avoid difficult situations.

I think some collectors like a mint/sealed copy and one to play:)

Ive seen vinyl carefully placed in a separate paper and card liner but when it was already opened. There is no need to open a boxset unless in someway the seller felt it was rattling around in there. On the upside it may be a very careful seller worried about the records and liners.

Doesnt look ideal and I would have canceled without a full explanation...do you want my story about a card item sent curled round in half a (still wet) washing up bottle? I know thats an extreme example but its what some sellers get up to when they have their own ideas.

For the price you want things right. You payed for sealed and now you have no crucial indicator if the inners have been swapped. Just on that level if the vinyl is marked you have to assume the worst with no real proof. I would start taking notes for an ebay case.

Im a glass half empty kinda guy though and it may be the best packaging you have ever seen. Its the uncertainty that bothers me so try and get a full explanation

I've taken screen grabs of the listing. Here's the message conversation I've had when him, though it's in reverse order. I'm not sure why he uses 'we' - he hasn't any other listings at the moment. He doesn't accept returns but if it's not as described he doesn't have an option I think.

Trust me, I released this box-set and this is the safest way to deliver it via courier.

TÚ:

Ok I kind of get that but as it's the vinyl im worried about I would have thought it would be better protected in its original box also so that it was doubled boxed/ packaged. Ok, thanks for getting it off and I'll let you know how it arrives and plays - it's already not as described (sealed) but I've been watching for this set to come up for 6 months or more so will give you the benefit of the doubt.

Adey

inky-basement:

It is brand new. As the three vinyl LPs are 180gm each, we've found that they can damage the inside of the*
box-set when shipped.
all the best, Ian

TÚ:

Ok thanks, though I'd have preferred it sealed as advertised. I'm trusting that it hasn't been played.
Adey

inky-basement:

Hello Adey, the box-set is on its way. As it's being shipped abroad, I've opened it, checked it and packed the vinyl separately in case of damage in transit.
All best, Ian

also i would call ebay and make them aware, ask them to look at the message history, you then have it on record if you need to open a buyers dispute,im inclined to smell a rat and cancel the sale, its already as you sale not as described.

The message history is on record anyway. I've had a few chats with ebay in the past and they have viewed related messages during queries.

100% feedback is hard to keep going, there's always one idiot to spoil it, so he's obviously careful.

Ask yourself this, what you rather, receive a damaged record that was damaged in production, or receive one in a box that has been opened, checked and seen to be perfect?

He's done you a favour, don't get hung up on the single thing that doesn't matter to you.

if it has been played it will obvious.

Not always, i gave most of my vinyl away some time ago hardly used, no sign of use at all, utter mint, not sealed but it was bought from a shop , ah.those were the days....

Youve had the correspondence so that seems fine to me. In my experience its only a worry when you cant get a response or much of one. There is an explanation there so no real worries if you were going to open it anyway

He seems a careful seller and knows you are paypal protected.

I have a couple of classical boxsets and they generally seem to be packed in with a thick 12" booklet on top. I have never had a boxset by post but suppose there is room for movement and burst sleeves.

I sometimes raid boxsets for the poly lined paper liners

Hey no don't feel bad! I'm hopeful there won't be a problem - and if everything is fine I'll be over the moon as getting hold of that album is like finding pubic hair growing on an egg lol.

To be honest I usually buy from discogs and haven't had a problem. On eBay yes. Also bought another 2 albums at the same time as Electrified, one seller (Roxy media) has told me that they don't know when the album will be in stock even though it's advertised as being so si ive demanded a refund, and the other hasn't posted it got back to me since - wankers.

I ordered the Roxy Music box and a Johnny Cash box set's from a well known online retail store and paid via Paypal, received a not in stock reply,so canceled the order and got a refund.About a month later they both turned up,contacted the seller and asked them to arrange collection,18 months later they still haven't collected them,so seems a shame not to play them.

Rarely buy off the auction site, but have picked quite a few bargains " Minimum Maximum" sealed vinyl box for £30 springs to mind, stick to record fairs mostly now.

Same thing with Subbuteo.
I know of collectors buying shrinkwrapped teams that have never been used and they don't care what reference number they are, so long as they're unopened.
Same thing with blister-carded toys, of course, like Star Wars figures, etc.

Subby teams often go for hundreds of pounds anyway, but factor in this "fetish" and you're looking at £1000+ for a rare one.

Whatever men collect, they will pay over the odds for .. twas ever thus :)

Received today. Packaging immaculate. Vinyl outside of main box which in my opinion is stupid as the design of the box is fantastic. But all seems well - listening now and I'd say it's unplayed - but another album to go....

Gosh it's bloody good!

E Bays a funny thing. Sometimes we expect the worse (especially after bad things have happened ), but it never ceases to amaze you when you find an honest gem of a seller :)
