I have been pretty busy this week, catching up on work outstanding etc I'm not on top of it by any stretch and to be fair it's getting on my tits now...
But I have still had a really good week, I could swear my hifi seems to be getting better this week, it's been a real source of happiness and relaxation for me both when I'm doing work and after it. I wonder if it's getting better or just if I have been worrying about other things so have stopped concentrating on the hifi and just been listening to the music..
Does anyone else find there hobby to's and fro's between music and hifi? That's how it is for me anyway, I will quite happily admit the hifi part takes over sometimes and I get my self in a right fuss tweaking speakers by millimeters etc ... And it's fun when it happens! I'm glad I'm in a music phase though now! Last time this happend with my main system was just after i got my majik this time last year and lasted until September last year when I started getting itchy for an amp upgrade... I wonder now I have this system how long this music phase will last?? I predict longer!!

If you let it, hi-fi will cloud your judgements, you can easily get sucked into it to the point that the hi-fi becomes even more a part of your hobby that listerning to actual music. I forget the amount of times i've seen mega buck specialised systems in which the owner will had 50 albums if your lucky..It's about time people started buying stereos & if they like what they hear keep it & enjoy it instead of throwing stupid money about because they read a review of heard someone talking about something.

Yeah I know what your saying, the music is the end result, but the hifi equpment is a big part of the hobby! I don't mind spending time obsesing over the hifi as I know I will always come back to the music when I have achived what I set out to! It's the same with photography, I agree with the sentiments that it's about the photo and the skil of taking the photo and that a good photo can be taken with any camera... But it doesn't stop me enjoying the cameras. Both instances are just the makin of a complete hobby for me. Some people can listen to music on whatever bit of crap hifi, and so can I... But my hobby is finding equipment that I apreiciate for it's abitilty to make the music I like sound as it should .. And getting the most out of that equipment...
Anyone on this forum who says it is just abou the music... Well, I suspect, if they can talk on this forum with any authority about the kit... Well they are either lieing to us or them selves!
It's about the music and the hifi... And the photo and the camera for me!

I would think what I said is stateing the blindingly obvious... But I think there is possibly enough pretence within this hobby to create some people who would say "it's all about the music, the kit is just a by product" then them spend 85% of the time being fanatical about kit and, as Andre says, only owning 50 CDs...
Admiting you have a hifi obsession is the first of 12 steps :lol:

I would say Hamish that as your pre-amplifier is new, that it is still running in. Remember as well that each input will also need to run in too. So yes I think it quite likely that your system is getting better.

Anthony said a couple of hundred hours to run in the pre amp, and that it would get better up til that point... So yeah I suspect you are right to a point!!

Whilst tinkering with ones system and trying out new gear is all part of the fun of this hobby of ours, just remember that it is only a means to an end. That end of course being the enjoyment of recorded speech and music.

I know one enthusiast, who despite my trying to explain otherwise, is so caught up with the hardware, that he regards the software (i.e. The music) as a means of showing off his gear. When he listens to his system, he seems to be constantly listening for flaws and weaknesses. To put it bluntly: he's got it 'arse about face'!

I like "showing off" my system too, but only really to those who apriciate the music, I have tried to show it off to those who don't, but they don't get it. What I am saying is, I do spend time obsesing and listening for faults ... How would I improve my system if I didn't? ... I might even spend weeks or months doing this... But... When I am happy, it becomes about the music... And if previous trends are to be taken note of, the music listening periods last much longer than the hifi listening ones... Surely this must be the case for most of us... If not then we would be satisfyed at a much lesser level of "hifi"... You don't go from jvc midi system to valve separates in one leap do you, analysis of the system and progresion through understanding of what you like, surely take periods of hifi listening and tweaking
...

I agree, it happens to me often too. It's rather frustrating to see that some people just don't want to invest some attention...

I guess, listening to music is part of an early education. :)

Hi Hamish

I sometimes get absorbed by the kit and upgrades ' but i do drift in and out of it , last year after getting the Timestep psu ' i just went on a vinyl frenzy and spent a lot of time listening , i bought over a hundred albums including about 20 brand new .

Then just before Xmas i wanted to improve my 1210 , starting with Dave's bearing and now looking at the arm ' so i am kind of obsessed with it at the moment ' then its back to buying and listening to more new vinyl , perhaps toward the end of the year a new and better phono stage ' predictable well i am afraid so , but i do enjoy it ' its always been my no'1 hobby , music and hifi .
