OK, so after seventeen years of not riding I bought what I had always truly wanted. I have spent over twenty years riding bikes and have become increasingly fed up with plastic Jap sports bikes. Even ten years of various Ducati's couldn't make me go back there so I bought this. 2001 model with 16k miles on the clock. Just been out today for around fifty minutes and absolutely blown away. First real solo ride and everything was better than expected. Handling is superb for a bloody big roadster, exhausts are the now import banned Screaming Eagles which just growl away at fifty in fifth on a gorgeous road in Lincolnshire notorious for deaths and the whole day is now sublime. As I type it is now ticking away in the drive. Aaaah....!!

Harley's may not be the best but are the coolest. not a biker now but grew up with norton and bsa etc, but would have a harley for the cool factor... they are decent cruisers too. best bike i was on was a massive honda.

Yeah, the usual comment from the plastic Jap brigade is "I wouldn't be seen dead on a Harley". They truly just don't get it. These guys insist a Harley is just a straight line machine. That in itself proves they have never ridden one because all you have to do is twitch an arse cheek and these things are all over the place but anyhow, thanks for your comments guys. I have now realised yet another dream.

The torque of this thing compared to lightweight gutless sports bikes would very probably enable it to pull a plough without any problems at all.

Now this is a proper motorcycle;) Not mine but identical to it.... about 3 x the BHP of a harley and 20% more torque, goes round corners, brakes work well, completely lacks mounting points for bullhorns, tassels, and more chrome bits and has no power take off for bailing machines etc :eyebrows:

Mmmm... very interesting. You've clearly never ridden a high performance sports bike from what you have just said. Wrist numbing tingling vibration that kills after about half and hour. All of your weight on the same wrists killing them even more and then severe neck pain from the riding position. Zero torque so when you pull away from the lights you are still slipping the clutch fifty feet down the road and in the case of Ducati's, a bike so fixed on the road it will barely change direction. Of course you know all of that because like messing about with circuit boards, you are an expert. At least that is what you continually tell everyone. And if a 30 min ride is the max for a real bike, a sports bike must surely only manage a ten minute stroll down to the high street as that is where most of them end up; at the local bike showroom.

Cheers John. The sound is very enigmatic with Screaming Eagle pipes like mine or Vance and Hinds alternatives but then you listen to music through a hi-fi system so you would be in a position to appreciate the sound. Others pretend to listen but sadly don't know how to.

Geoff, started my motorcycle days in 1976 riding a Kawasaki two stroke triple but quickly went on to other upgrades. Honda XL250S trailie bike and then a Kawasaki Z550 four cylinder. After that I had a GPz750 and then a GPz1000RX which was astonishingly fast. Then I kind of lost it a bit and went on to owning a few different Ducati's, 750SS, Monster 600, Monster 900 and finally a 907ie. In that time somewhere I also owned an FJ1200 and an FZR600. Last but now not least I bought a VN1500 Kawasaki Harley look alike. At that point I never wanted to ride a bike ever again but throughout all of these years I have always wanted to own a Harley, the iconic bike like no other. So, three weeks ago Sue and I bought one. This will almost certainly be my last ever motorcycle as I have severe osteoarthritis in my left knee which is never going to get any easier. I can still manage the bike OK and gear changing is still OK but I think that within the next few years I shall end my friendship with bikes. I will still have the hi-fi so this will take over with regards to hobbies. At the moment though I am enjoying the fact that I have realised yet another dream on the list.

Don't understand where you get the '1800cc' from. It is a Twin Cam 88 engine which is 1,450cc.

Check out the Triumph Rocket at 2,100cc with just a few horsepower.

That was about 1981.

Oh shit, now we're really talking. Back in '76 I had a KH250 but around 1997 I bought a vintage H2C, 750 triple. I kept it for around three months and then passed it on to a guy somewhere around Kent. A true pleasure to have owned such a bike but Jesus the handling was appalling. The truth is that the bike I always wanted to own was indeed a Mach III, 500. We shall sadly never see the likes of them ever again. Truly blessed to have been there. Totally humbled.

If those Jap tossers want to come screaming the nuts off their engines to get past me then that is fine with me. When I later pass them in the ditch at the side of the road I'll give them a nice wave as I pass, slowly.

Yes man, stay real safe on the sports bikes. I did that so many years ago I no longer have that speed lust. I now get the most amazing feel of satisfaction out of turning heads with that iconic bloody sound.
