I had this email sent to me today :scratch:

"Someone ask me to kill you. For your information I am not sending this message with my email address and internet service provider just in case you want to proof smart and stubborn..any ways I like someone like that!because I will be so happy to put a bullet on your skull..My boys have been watching your steps for few days.

I am giving you a chance to live simply because my oracle show me that you dont have a hand in what you were accused of

You are to pay me $10,000 and I shall terminate the operation,after that I will give you the info of the person that wants you dead. This is my last operation so I don't have anything to lose if i reveal the sender.I have gotten all I wanted to start a new life.reply or choose to ignore and get killed.This is not by force!

You can call the authority and have them do patrol in your area 24/7 that didn't stop me from hunting you and your love ones down.We are invisible!!

Typical scam, there's nothing in that email that indicates they author knows anything at all about you.

Clearly a scam - but highly disturbing nevertheless. Email death threats are known.

Personally I would report this to the Police Fraud team. (http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report-a-fraud-including-online-crime-questions)

What do the email headers say? Have a look at originating IP address etc - a lot can be gleaned from the headers. But probably from a machine that is now part of a bot scheme.

If you wanted to pay the $10K how are you supposed to do it? Does he give bank details? Will you have to put it in cash in a hold-all and travel around the city from payphone to payphone a la 'Dirty Harry'? Bit difficult to find a payphone these days.

I'd go back to him and ask for more info.

Well he is asking for 10k Dollars so I assume he is in the USA.So we can assume he is running a 24/7 trans-atlantic surveillance team for an unspecified period.
He may be a great hit man but I have to seriously question his business acumen.

That is a disgusting e mail scam. Its easy to say dont worry about it but to some people that might start a heart attack or something. I dont bother opening strange emails but others are more trusting of human nature

I think we can all imagine the sort of scenario where a scumbag sends those off. I still dont understand why they cant make the internet traceable and accountable even down to internet cafes who should hold checked records. It seems to me that tracing agencies should be doubled and penalties of long term imprisonment imposed. Do we need a WWW if its not traceable in large areas of the world. Surely a condition of going through a server should be that the line and computer has responsibilities

Yes, I'm afraid it really does; there are very real reasons why all of that which you suggest cannot be done. However, what I do agree with is that this is a very disturbing new email scam.

Yes I dont really understand it and some mail can come through hijacked bots. I thought the internet was that little black box on the IT Crowd.

The internet was originally designed by the US military as a communications channel that would survive a nuclear war. Ironically, cyber attacks are probably now the major risk to the US.
