Hi All,

I am seeing this (see attached pic, apologies for its small size but I think you should get the drift) a lot on people's posts.

Does this mean I have to update my photobucket account to be able to see the pictures or does the poster need to do so?

Thanks in advance,

Jim.20985

This is an issue on the Poster's side. Photobucket changed their Terms and Condition and now charge $400 to allow 'hotlinking' to images hosted on their servers.

Unsurprisingly most people aren't prepared to stump up that kind of cash so many image links are good as broken.

Not much we can do about this. Just make sure you use a reputable alternative going forward.

Unfortunately we do not have the space to host images for all users on our own servers.

Photobucket are :wanker:ers

As far as I'm concerned they are far worse than that. Propriety forbids me to say exactly what I now call them.

Suffice it to say, as soon as I find a reliable image hosting site - one that is easy to register with, and makes it easy to upload and download images, I will abandon PB and delete all the images I have lodged with them. If enough of us do that PB will die a death, and serve them right for their blatant avarice and despicable business practice.

A few days ago I deleted my entire account with these wankers which sadly will now make a bloody mess of all of my AOS posts but I will not any longer associate with them.

Has anyone found a suitable alternative yet?

I've never used Photobucket. Stuck with Tinypic for years.

I've changed to one called Imgur. I'm certainly not paying an annual fee of £300 to Photobucket! However, I'm also not prepared to go through hundreds of links repairing them so any pic I have posted will just have to stay broken.

Also using imgur. Also not paying any ransom to photobucket and also not going round fixing what must be many hundreds of broken links over more than a decade.

Imgur for me since the tossers at photofuckit messed things up... and that reminds me that I need to do the rest of the images in my trade zone!

I have read that the 'imgur' T&Cs are identical to those of PB. So it is possible that with time, imagur might start to charge for 3rd party hosting.

I registered with 'cubeupload', and uploaded a few images, but I'm having difficulty downloading.

I would like to register with 'flickr' as they are a well respected hosting site for professional photographers, and thus permit 3rd party hosting - but the registration page just presents me with three boxes without saying what you have to enter in each. Can anyone help?

I registered easily with flickr, a few days ago and with the help of AOS members have downloaded a few pics.

So, come on Barry, get on with it..:goodluck:

Its not suprising they actually went for some form of coersion ,to extract the extra dollar from users .
Some small amount would have been acceptable
However , this brickwall approach they have gone for , cant end well for them

Thanks for the step by step Al, much appreciated.
I've been trying to find my way around posting thumbnails for years :o.
I'll give your step by step a go when I next upload some updated shots of my set up :)

I have also grown fed up with Photobucket and opened an I Imgur account on your advice. Much much better.

Mmnn.....
Frying pan/fire comes to mind.
Wouldn't trust any of em.
No such thing as a free lunch.
When they become too popular and the overheads for providing the service outweighs the revenue they can generate, they will do something similar to Photobucket and stop people hot linking.

I agree about Imgur. Easy to upload and a breath of fresh air after Phartbucket , who can go and stuff themselves

Always used Imageshack (for YEARS now) with *zero* problems. Never understood why Imageshack always seemed to be less popular than Photo[sick]bucket...? :hmm:

Photobucket was very annoying and slow for me. All those pop up ads and it took an age to download pics with our naff internet speed. With flickr, there are no ads and it is a lot quicker, so photobucket did me a favour.

Im on Imgur now and its very fast to upload. I can easily provide links and images for this forum

Im really miffed about photobucket as it was way too slow to use and suddenly I was to be charged for a service I wouldnt pay for.

I just upload a few pictures to have a link for forums. I hadnt thought about what monetary value I would put on that

I notice they have dropped their price from $350 to $80 a year. That must please those who signed up at $350 no end. Still ridiculous. Who in their right mind would pay 80 bucks just to store a few photos?

Why store photos there in the first place? If I have anything I want to keep (which is seldom), it goes on a DVD or memory stick.

Photobucket own the Tinypic image hosting site which is free. But it is littered with ads.

Macca

The ads are fair enough if they are not charging you. I appreciate they have to eat too. But for five bucks a year you should be able to go ad-free. Not $80.

My view on Photobucket now is they put it to the test and I was not prepared to pay to host images on their site. I found the change very distasteful and money grabbing but nobody likes a fee suddenly introduced.

Im miffed but its up to them how they want to run things. I didnt value it as a service I would pay for. I only uploaded a few pictures to help people or amuse people on forums.

If it was going to cost then I cant show somebody my tonearm modifications and they are not really wanting to pay to see it anyway. I could email the pictures free as part of my usage allowance.

Ive gone on Imgur and any other site that I can host a few pictures on. If it was part of my business to show pictures then I would accept paying for it. It isnt so I dont

I wonder how many did subscribe. And how many wanted a refund when they dropped the price.

I'm fairly convinced they thought they could hold people to ransom and make a killing. I suspect that didn't work out and now no-one likes them.

Yeah I would like to have been a fly on the wall at the meeting. They thought that they could hold people to ransom but I feel its backfired on them.

To me its the more precarious part of a dot com bubble and I wonder what orgs like wikipedia will do in future because they have dropped a clanger in terms of financing
