A headshell sans cartridge

First here's my little confession: I had to buy a whole turntable to get the headshell I was looking for.
How about that :doh: :lol::lol:

Now that I found the SH-120 headshell for my Sony PS-5520 tt I need advice on a cartridge. My budget for a cartridge is €150-€200.
So what would be a nice cartridge for the Sony :scratch:
I do have a NOS Shure V15 III cartridge lying around in a bin somewhere, maybe I can use one of those in the Sony and save me some €'s for now.

The eff. arm is middle mass so do I go for a high or low compliance cart and does the tracking force have a roll for that matter. To me it's all new and confusing so if someone can explain I will appreciate.

The V15 III won't work in your deck as the low playing weight of 1.25 grammes or so is too much for the auto mechanism, which adds a good bit of friction (hence my comments about the Sony [and Pioneer PL15D] being pitched somewhere between the Garrard SP25 and far gentler Dual decks).

An AT95E would be great, as would Ortofon's OM-Pro and possibly the E versions of its Nightclub series. I saw a supposedly good Shure M75-EJ on Fleabay and this at 2 grammes would be perfect.. Incidentally, our secret fave Shure M3D/N21 would also be perfect and give the deck a bit of life, as would the Stanton 500A or E variant

Not really. The turntable isn't worth spending £200 on, after all, it was an upper budget turntable when new. A s/h Rega or a GL75 if he feels adventurous will provide a better sound for that £200.

As I said, that's not the point. If he wanted a Rega, or any other turntable he'd have bought one. He didn't, he bought the Sony, and he even bought another Sony just to get the correct headshell.

I realise that he now has two Sony turntables but he will get a better sound by changing to a s/h Rega, GL75, GL70, TD150, TD160 etc, etc. I haven't missed any point, I'm just trying to help get the best sound for his Pounds. If he wants to keep the Sony, I don't think he should spend £200 on a cartridge for it.

We two Dave's agree and we have been round the block or two. You can't make a silk purse from two Sony's, unless they are two worthwhile Sony's, and I have indeed owned two and put a Dynavector Ruby Karat on one.

Kris, you hit the needle right on the head, I have already the 2 Sony's, a Dual CS 5000 with DL-160 for daily spin, and a 701, just as a back-up.

I just like to get a decent sound out of the Sony and that's all I am looking for.
So I don't know which cart to go for but I know my records are in mint condition and the least I can do is to put a fine needle in the groove.
