Has anyone made a decent video of your gear?

Hi all,

I attempted to make a video of the Alphason and Toshy combo today with decent sound quality. I Connected a phono jack to phono jack cable from the Headphone socket on the Creek headphone amp to the mic input on the camera, a Nikon DSLR 5300. The image was HD as one would expect but the sound is so bad its criminal. Its really hissing badly.

Anyone got any ideas other than editing the sound separately which is nothing but aggro.

It must be me... maybe... but I don't even want to see photos never mind a video! It strikes me as being as sensible and relevant as recording the sound of an art gallery! carry on....

I also don't see the point of it, I mean I'm going to listen to it through the speakers on a Lenovo laptop. They're surprisingly good in the same way as Farm Foods sausage rolls are surprisingly good - in that they are not as totally rank as you thought they might be, but are still totally rank.

How about doing a commentary instead, talk about the kit? I always watch those videos that start with a commentary and a walk around all the kit up until the point where they put music on and then I switch it off.

I like to see a video of something i am interested in purchasing and also as its a slightly unusual combo there is no Info available about how one could fit an Alphason/Linn to an SME arm board. I thought the project had been quite interesting and the results were worth sharing. And whats wrong with showing it in its full glory with a record playing!

You would need an XLR Box mate. DSLR mini jack has AGC which causes major problems. an xlr box will fix that by overriding it

seems to me yyou need to adjust levels at one end or the other. A mic feed isn't the same level as a line level from an amp - I guess. Can you reduce the sensitivity of the mic input? Or control the level of the output from the amp?

Hm even if the audio doesn't interest you a video provides views of kit at all sorts of angles when shot well with that sort of intention.

But then again listening on a laptop is pretty shite unless you are connected to something decent.

Judging the SQ from videos is really dodgy and I have shot enough show videos to know that great sounding systems can sound good or bad when shot via video even with a relatively decent mic.

The Mibo videos I shot gave a sense of vibe from the place no one could have ever received in any other way.

iphone isnt bad audio wise. a caera is usually better picture wise but slightly worse audiowise. guess you could use a separate to record audio and blend with a program should be easy enough. Those xlr's are what any pros use with a dlsr as it works out a lot cheaper than a top notch video camera

I might try recording it on the Laptop and seeing how it sounds. I agree that the sound can provide an insight but it wont ever be precise.

I did a short vid ages ago of my TT, I just used my iPhone and whilst the sound was nothing special it was reasonably ok, certainly no SN issues.

Personally, I do live recording of my band. I have an app on my notebook called Reason, but there are dozens of different brands. And I have a nice Presonus audio to computer interface. I can record up to 8 channels at once. But if I were trying to make a sound track for my stereo video, I'd take two tracks and use two identical studio mic's, nicely placed on either side of the room. While recording the stereo in action, I would use a camcorder or two to video the stereo in action, with possible narration of the kit and cables. Then! I've got another program on my notebook that is designed for editing video. Called PowerDirector, I believe. It allows me to use up to 4 different videos and a sound track, and it automatically aligns all versions by listening to the sound track of each video version. Most ingenious. So, I can produce a video of my stereo with polished and edited sound, and jump between video angles at will, making a very professional looking product. Mind you it is many hundred dollars worth of software and gear, but I already own it for making videos of my band I play with. I'm sure even simpler versions that may be included on your notebook computer may be able to at least patch an audio track to the video.

Personally, I'm wanting to make such a video, or even take photos, but I keep putting it off until after I've cleaned house, and at least a year has slid past me so far.

They were recorded with a Panasonic HD camcorder, with the audio set to 24bit 48K.

After listening to them I thought they captured about 95% of what I'm hearing in the room.

well they don't all sound the same even through my laptop speakers so clearly there is some differentiation. But I'm still of the opinion that the only way to hear someone's system is to sit in front of it.

Although it may seem counterintuitive I like videos of hi-fi playing regardless of the fact that I'm listening on no-fi Creative PC speakers. I could watch the Kenrick Sound clips on YouTube all day, especially the ones that are quasi-documentary where they're delivering the gear and setting it up with great care :stalks:

Oddly I just listened to it on the upstairs laptop through the creative speakers and it sounds quite decent. in real life it was stunning, but played back through hifi it was terrible. Guessing the iphone mic caused it

Oh I dont know. If its well recorded you get the idea of how good it must sound in the room. Ive heard some very good recordings of female vocals and Jazz on a good system.

Through headphones I can make slight allowances but it still sounds good so it must sound even better there.

I often like to see the equipment powered up and working...say a Nakamichi casstte deck or reel to reel for example

I do appreciate a good video although lets be honest that there are some terrible ones about. I appreciate the effort some people make to give me a feel for whats on offer with big vintage Tannoys or something special.
