View Full Version : Photobucket.
Looks like these lot are now demanding money for hosting images posted to 3rd party sites.
As such every image I've ever uploaded here as been replaced with a shitty message from them.
Pardon my French but fuck you photobucket, fuck you.
I pay a small fee to imageshack and get a great service. not used the bucket much for years.
I'd imagine all other images uploaded by photobucket users here are similarly being held to ransom.
Why can't we just post our pics direct here and have to use these shitty services which hold us to ransom.

I mentioned this earlier this evening. Now introducing charges I can understand, but applying this retrospectively is outrageous.
It's an American company of course, so mercinary and unscrupulous business practises are to be expected. They've probably been planning this all along.
costs a lot I guess. You can put pics on here although they come out as thumbnails I think initially.
Same here. Just enrolled with Imgur, and got as far as getting a few images onto my account there, but can't manage to get them linked to my advert in private exhibitions.

I'm fuming, I've used them since joining here and now every fuckin pic is screwed. Bastards. 39.99 a sodding month to use my own bloody pic.
I seriously hope they fucking choke...
mine is nothing like that
i'm $1.67/mo with the shack, but ive been with them for a while. might add i think its an american version im with as i pay in dollars. maybe why its cheaper
Why cannot this site facilitate uploads of pics directly as I can on many other forums?

It can, I use Tapatalk which is way easier. The Browser version of the forum is a pain in the arse. It can be done though.

Yes i use tapatalk too. Easy to post pics and they are good sized too.
Are Photobucket only targeting user with a large number of photos?
Mine are fine but I've only got about 40 maybe.

Only Photobucket can answer that John, but personally, I'd be inclined to find another hosting service pretty promptly. I've never used Photobucket myself, I've been using 'tinypic' for many years.
I apologise for the sweary nature of my previous posts. I'd had a drink and was livid (still am) at photobucket breaking all links to pics.
Many of which I've uploaded will be of NEBO etc and we'll, those threads are spoiled now.
ive just used it and it worked for me. dunno for how long tho.. i rarely use them tbh. but its going to break a lot of historical threads

I only have about the same number of photos stored as you, John, and they've clobbered me. I noticed it happening to others a few days before I got done, so it's probably only a matter of time before they get to you.
If I had thousands of photos I wanted to store, then I might not mind paying for the service, but the only reason I use it is because of the way this forum works, so I'd prefer to do it for free if possible. Tried imgur, but don't seem to be able to post with it so far.

Mine are all gone as well. They must have done that yesterday. Been with photo bucket since 2008/9 so I have hundreds of images out there, all gone now :(
Certainly I can probably replace some on here, but can I be bothered ? Nope. Guess my for sale ads will have to be deleted now.
That's the end of my gallery thread (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?34865-Going-Back-in-Time). I'd be grateful if a mod could delete the entire thread please.

Whilst this manoeuvre by Photobucket has broken links on literally millions of forum posts worldwide, I have noticed that some images I have posted are still intact.
I have a theory that the broken links were all made by users clicking the links box to the right of the image.
A little while ago I noticed that images I was posting were giving access to my Photobucket library, and all you had to do was click on the image in a forum post.
The only way I could stop this happening was to right click on the image in Photobucket, and use the Copy Image Location button.
I then go to the forum post, use the insert image button, then paste the image location details. It's these images that still appear where I've posted them.

they have little to lose doing this I guess as they receive nothing bar ads at moment. Think their pricing is aimed at business and not at normal occasional users on forums. If you put 1 pic on a day its going to cost about £1.25 a picture. My deal with the shack is pretty cheap but have to wonder for how much longer it will stay that way

Hi Paul,
Do you not still have the images stored on your computer hard drive?
If so, just upload them again using an alternative method (as shown here) or hosting company, and replace the most recent/relevant pics on your Gallery thread. I use Imageshack, with no such problems as you've (or others here have) experienced with PB.
Would be a shame to lose all your pics :)
Marco.
Marco, I would prefer to just delete the thread. It's taken two unbelievably frustrating hours just to download my own albums from photobucket. There's no way I've the patience to wade through my thread replacing the images. Life's too short. The sooner I can forget photofuckit the better. I've already deleted my account. The best I can do is to start a new thread with some edited highlights at some point soon.
I don't get this, I only uploaded a bunch of pictures to Photobucket yesterday and linked to them no problem - I don't pay anything. The adverts are exceedingly annoying though and massively slow the site down.

I think they're phasing it in across their customer base. Your time will come.
Method to upload photos to site...
Click on your username at top. On next page down left hand side there is a section called albums. Click on more, then on create album. Give it a title and description, leave it public and save.
Then click upload pictures, the add files. Add files which should show in a row below. Once you have the ones you want in that row, click done at bottom right. Then save changes button.
Now when you click on that pic, you willl receive a bb code at bottom.. post that directly into your post( no brackets are needed at they have been added).
Done...
Just checked some of the NEBO and my gallery threads.
All ferked..
To replace and upload them now seems tiresome and a bit pointless, I'm just gutted that a historical record of my contribution here has effectively gone and as I'm not really posting so much nowadays, it is unlikely it will ever come back. This will apply to all but the most diehard members here who ever used photobucket.
As I said before it's a total dick move by them, I'll be deleting my account with them and removing the app from my devices. I really do hope they choke on this.

All the photos of amp builds etc in my trade zone are on photobucket and are present and correct... so far anyway.
Its full of ruddy ads anyway , and a right pain in the arsh to use
This is why I don't trust any of the on line photo library services and host my own pictures.
Even if these companies just do some internal house keeping and change the location/path your links get broken.
Forums are littered with empty frames on older threads because of this and it just got a whole lot worse.

I don't understand why anybody would want to keep their images 'elsewhere' anyway. Mine are on the PC or backed up to CD/DVD or stick. Not stored on some site.
mine are all on hd as well, or most.. I have a pile on i cloud too but most of them are backed up onto pc then on hdd. Some on imageshack and a pile on google photos too. Good to have plenty options in case. my music rips are multiple saved as well.
All my original images are on my local system, but you need some way to host them on line and link to them. If everyone uploaded their pictures to AoS it would overload. I have Hundreds of pictures out their, I'm just loading another 66 from a school reunion, so folks in Canada etc can see them.
yeah, a few do links to a folder etc. Dropbox, google photos etc as well as the usual suspects. Iphone do a sharing folder so you can use that if you have an ipad or mac. Unfortunately mine are all over place and not filed properly as the ones that were done (most) got crash and burn syndrome and the backup did same 5 days later before I got the replacement ... Never got round to redoing them

All mine are on PC and Hard Drive. I joined Photobucket after joining here, and it was suggested as a way of posting pictures, via the IMG link. It saddens me that all the pictures since 2008 ish are now gone, my words still exist, but the pictures are gone. In away PB have killed part of me by doing this, they have also damaged AoS. I do get why they may need to charge regarding linking, but to demand $400 to do so, for a civilian posting on forums is scummy in the extreme. I can't justify that cost, so my photos will remain gone.
I don't trust this virtual world, I store nothing on the Cloud, and this experience with PB has reinforced the complete and utter foolishness of anyone trusting the net, or companies. I will continue to be a Luddite and stay real world and in my control focused as long as I can.

I feel the same way Neil. I have all my photos saved on various pc and hard drives but photobucket was the recommended way of sharing them on here and now that's ferked.
Since I'm not someone with a huge technical knowledge to share here the bulk of my contribution has been to share pics of various get togethers and my own humble systems and music purchases.
I haven't had a lot to contribute here lately due to other distractions and just as I was coming back round to my hifi interests this happens.
I think I give up.

I feel pretty much the same Rich. Makes me feel not worth posting anything up anymore and I have put quite a lot of stuff on this site over the last few years.
The interface for sharing photos with this site needs to be changed so photos can be directly uploaded to the site from your computer and not a third party! Many other sites do this with ease why not AOS?

In my opinion what Photobucket are doing is nothing short of corporate blackmail. They don't own the images - you do, so it should be up to you to do with them what you like.
In some ways what Photobucket is doing can be seen to be little different to criminal hackers with ransomware attacks. I too refuse to pay the $400 ransom Photobucket are charging.
I have written many articles for The Knowledge, and as 'Fount Master' the responsibility to maintain this facility for the benefit of Members is mine. Many, if not most of the images are hosted by Photobucket. The original images taken by me are stored on the hard drive on my PC, but having been downloaded at different times over the last 10 years are in as many folders, along with holiday snaps etc. To re-install them in a 'safe haven' will be a long, tedious and protracted effort - not one which fills me with any enthusiasm.
And as one Member has already stated, the action of Photobucket now makes me reluctant to post here with any regularity, if at all.
Grant, as someone who is a real numpty when it comes to software matters, could you describe in words of one syllable how images stored on my PC can be directly posted here? Thanks.

I totally agree with you Barry.
As soon as it appears my images are being blocked I shall remove every single one from Photobucket.
Learn from this guys, don't just move to some other on line storage facility, or facebook etc.
Create your own website, store COPIES of the pictures on there and link to them.
I don't even trust the hosting providers and have a full copy of my website stored so I can move it where I want.
Even if you change Hosting providers your links still work, so your not tied to any one company, I changed mine a few months back.
Costs me £2.99/Month to run my site with Best Web Hosting and I get unlimited storage.
You can run a blog or whatever on your own site and you get email addresses attached to it. Which are again, fixed to your site and you can keep if you change hosting companies. eg myname@myname.co.uk which is what I have, amongst others.
I don't think uploading to AoS is a good idea, but I'm not sure what the storage capacity is with its hosting service.
Don't want to grind it to a halt.

I don't seem to be looking at this from the same perspective as many of you folks.
Yes, I used Photobucket.
Yes, my forum images are gone.
But I've always regarded posts and threads as transitory things of the moment,
A thread is active for a while - folks follow it, contribute, see what others post .... and then move on to the next thing.
It's like a conversation - you say something and it is gone, with no permanent record left.
Yes, it's a bit sad that the historical images are gone and the threads often fatally disrupted for viewing now.
But they served their purpose at the time.
I can see that AOS's technical databases being corrupted is a bad thing, a lot of people put a lot of work into compiling them as a resource for others to use.
But the regular threads, well, they served their purpose at the time.
They don't own the images - you do, so it should be up to you to do with them what you like.
On most, probably all, of these sites, if you read the small print, THEY own everything on their site.
It's a cover all, so no one can take legal action if they loose something.

I have found them to be better than most at support, online support chat can solve minor problems, if you take out a support ticket they get back to you pretty quick. You can even ring them, which I tried before subscribing just to check. I've used 4 services and these are by far the best.
Avoid Yorhost like the plague. Impossible to contact, they just ignore emails, even about billing and their telephone number does not exist.
On most, probably all, of these sites, if you read the small print, THEY own everything on their site.

In that case I shall delete everything I have on PB once the images used in The Knowledge are secured. Photobucket won't remain viable for long if every user does the same.
they still hav'nt removed any of mine. I didnt have many tbh but afaik they are all still up. I did some tests recently and all were there last I looked. But yes I will be deleting my account as much as I can there too. its bad form what they did. I think they are only interested now in business types using it. they are bound to know the average Joe is not going to stump up £400 a year.
All my photos on Photobucket are in folders which are "Private" yet they have always been visible on AOS and still are.
Is it just albums which are set up as "Public" on Photobucket that are been held to ransom?
Guys, I think it's important to keep a sense of perspective on this and remember, as has been shown here already, that the world of image hosting doesn't revolve around Photobucket.
And as they say: 'where there's a will, there's always a way'...
Therefore, whilst I fully agree that what PB have done is unfair and outrageous, as well as highly inconvenient, some of the 'wailing and gnashing of teeth' (giving up, as if it was the end of the world), and 'I'm not playing anymore', etc, in evidence here, is a little ridiculous.
Sorry, but I have to be honest. In that respect, it's time for all of us to deal with things as best as we can, not allow it to spoil the enjoyment of our hobby, and move onwards and upwards!
Marco.

Photobucket went slower than a snail in slowville. I dont really use it anymore but to be fair I will often use things with no sense of paying for a service.
I understand that things have to be paid for but they did advertise the service as free to use. I just dont like the way they are clearly pushing me to pay for a premium service and slowing everything down with advertising. Either its free or it isnt. I call it the Wikepedia effect...do we donate or do we really want to pay...have they shot thmselves in the foot? I get the sense that photobucket are thinking whoops we should have charged for this in the internet dot bubble
I was just using it to post pictures on forums and I think all forums should have a direct upload link from my computer. cant see the need for a middleman. I cant really see the point of photobucket otherwise so I dont want to pay to use it.
I dont download the free games with advertising or in game purchases because Id rather pay for the game outright. Ok I did a few in the past but only when the minimal advertising is off when my data link is off. Anything with obtrusive advertising gets deleted pronto.
So if photobucket cant afford to/dont want to run a free service I would rather they just said pay or clear off
I guess if the bulk of one's contribution here is to 'three words daily' then you're not going to feel the loss to the same extent are you.
Not sure what that's supposed to mean, Rich... The bottom line is that PB have done what they've done, it's shit, yes, but not the end of the world, so we need to get over it, use Imageshack instead, or something else, and move on.
Moping over/moaning about circumstances that are out with of our control solves nothing.

So if photobucket cant afford to/dont want to run a free service I would rather they just said pay or clear off
Thanks .
thats pretty much the way I see it:)

Yes and I now see the reports that they have rendered the photo links void as everybody will have to pay.
Im not worked up about that because I dont really need this world of image hosting. I used to post some pictures on another forum and photobucket was the only one I had really twigged.
There are a lot of things on the internet I dont need and I dont see how they can come up with a monetary value for the business.
Perhaps someone can enlighten me how important image hosting on a third party site is?
I have my windows photo gallery and my photo albums :) I do like being able to save a picture of a Dalek for example and I usually directly upload and download with my computer
Best wishes
Martin
well mine had not been affected for soe reason(maybe as I a very low user, I dont know)but I have removed almost all my pics on that site. Left one or 2 for now. Its a matter of principle

Consensus?
You want consensus on a hifi forum?
I've been using Imgur since the photobucket debacle and it's been fine.

I've joined Imgur anyway. Now the long boring and only required due to photobucket being twats process of replacing all my images...
I just wish there was something we could do to really hurt photobucket!
staying away from their crappy site in droves ought to work.

I would have thought 99.9% of those they have tried to hold to ransom will do just that and that they have signed their own death warrant but something like a hack or virus that holds them to ransom would be nice!!

Hmm... Maybe I'm missing something obvious here but it would appear that unless editing rights are restored to old threads it is not possible to delete the old images (now ransom demands from photocunts of course) or add new ones!!?? Disaster if that's the case!

There's a 24 hour limit on editing an AOS post. Unless the powers that be intervene.

Yes indeed I had forgotten until I tried to begin fixing things... I strongly believe we therefore need the powers that be to intervene otherwise non of the now defunct threads can be repaired! I can't even delete a thread and start a replacement one! (not that I would be willing to go that far).
At present then all of my "advertising" in my trade area on AOS, in the form of photos accompanying threads, showing products and showing rebuilds stage by stage etc, are fucked!!
I'm afraid restoring editing rights is beyond the power of a mere moderator. Needs the site admin access. We'll sort something out.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do about this!

I do hope so!
Mods can put pics in for you I guess depending on how many. You would need to contact one who is willing. Not sure admin can change the access as you would need mod rights to do it

So give us all mod rights if that's what it takes! Or at least temporarily while we sort photos... or at least for trade members...It will take me hours to sort this myself so I wouldn't impose such a thing on anyone else... I have many more photos on hard drive than I used in threads so where it may say "observe the leaky cap at top left which was replaced first" I will have to go through loads of photos to find the one matching the caption for a start!
If this cannot be sorted it is in effect all my advertising permanently fucked!!
Surely just the "remove editing rights after 24 hours" feature can just be switched off?
you could copy and paste much of it and then insert pics to that.
the copy and paste is fairly good way to redo a thread. all the responces after a mod can move to the new thread then.
not sure the software allows it (ie temp mod features only to your own stuff)but sure an admin will let us know.
Lol... As the late Michael Winner famously used to say: 'Calm down, dear!' ;)
I've altered the editing rights of all members to give them the ability to edit posts indefinitely (with no time limit) until such times as old links to images have been repaired/replaced on relevant threads.
I will allow this to continue for a month, which should be enough time for everyone to sort their pics out. Could folks please confirm that they now have the necessary editing abilities? :)

are you ok with users uploading images directly to AoS?
I just, as a test, created an album and uploaded a 4mb image. With hundreds of users possibly uploading images many GBs could be used quite quickly. Does you web host allow unlimited disk (and bandwidth)?
By the way I think it is very generous of you providing this site and, so far as I can see, you don't get any payments (such as from third party adverts).
Edward
added:
Just looked more closely and see that the upload/save process for images into AoS albums downsamples the image. In my test example 4mb went to about 100k.
just remember photos will only be viewable via the web page.. tatatalk will upload free full images that will be seen everywhere

Just had an email from Botophuket telling me that they are limiting my account due to third party postings. I think it is time I removed every image from there and found another way to host.

Click on the image and then scroll down to 'Properties'. Click on this and you will then get a small window showing the 'url'. Swipe across this and 'Copy'. Click on 'OK' to close the window.
Now post in the forum and you can display your image by pasting the url preceded by and terminated with , thus:
https://i.screenshot.net/jyk67s8
yes, or right click on an image and select copy image location/address depending on browser. the 3rd from right box at top with the little tree in, will put the appropriate IMG around it for you.

I tried to register with Flickr, but I was presented with three boxes to fill with no indication what they were for: username, e-mail address, password, repeated password ...? So I gave up.

Moving all my pics to another site is a massive PITA but nothing compared to the immense amount of time it would take to repair every picture link. Despite Marco's generosity in allowing editing of old posts I'm afraid I won't be updating mine - life's just too short for that level of faffing.

Agreed, I won't be updating mine either.
Unfortunately all this means huge swathes of pictures now no longer exist (except in private folders - or even public ones nobody knows about) :(.
What amazes me in all of this is that so many folks originally chose to use Photobucket, instead of Imageshack, for example, which for me was always more intuitive to use, and now, much cheaper!
Why the apparent 'fanboy worship' of Photobucket, or rather, why was Photobucket chosen, in the first place by folks here, more than any other image hosting site? I'm curious and would just like to understand the reasoning behind it :)
The fact is, if you'd used something else in the first place, you wouldn't be in this situation now.

I'm a little mystified. Am I correct in thinking people have been keeping their images only on external hosting sites, as opposed to on their PC and backed up onto other media, such as a memory stick or DVD?
it was free. obvious reasoning i would think. could have happened to any service i guess, especially free ones. sure they can all raise prices without any notice should they want to.
Ive used inageshack for a long time and have a cheap deal off them. if it changes then it will get dumped, and if I lose posted pics then fair enough. I have backups

I used Photobucket because someone mentioned it to me. It was free and I could work it so that was good enough. The only pics I have on there are all Hi-Fi, so not important and some are still on my computer.
Do you have to pay for Imageshack ?

Same here. Although my photobucket pics are still working at the moment, I stopped using it a while ago due to all the ads making it too slow.
Personally I used Photobucket because it was easy and I didn't find Imageshack to be more intuitive. Marco, hindsight is a powerful tool, but if it had been Imageshack that had done this (and who's to say they won't if it's a success for Photobucket) then the shoe could easily have been on the other foot.
I don't think anybody has their pictures only on Photobucket and anyway, the pictures can still be accessed on Photobucket even now. It's the third party hosting links that have been broken. Even if one moves all those pictures over to Imageshack the links to them will all have to be generated and inserted into past threads and posts. If you've only got a handful of pics to do that for then it's not an issue, but I've got literally hundreds of audio related images.
I don't see any 'fanboy' enthusiasm for Photobucket, I certainly don't have any, it was riddled with irritating adverts (as free sites always are). I wouldn't feel too smug though Marco, it's your forum that is going to have hundreds of broken image links. In many cases this will make the accompanying threads pretty pointless.
It's nothing to do with 'smugness', Mark - nothing could be further from my mind, as I know full well the problems what PB have done has caused.
It's rather that I'm curious why most folks seem to have initially flocked to Photobucket, as opposed to many of the other image-hosting sites available. Imageshack used to be free, then about a year and a half ago they introduced a charge (something paltry like $70 a year), which I thought was fair enough for the amount of images I post on forums, so simply paid it without a fuss.
Therefore, as a paying user, my images will remain safe from deletion. Just because something is free, doesn't automatically mean that I'm predisposed to using it over something that I have to pay a small charge for. I'm not a tight-wad, lol.
I chose Imageshack, over PB, simply because I personally found it easier to use, and continue to use it to this day with no issues whatsoever
Marco.

Somehow my deal is about $20 a year. Wouldnt pay 70 for it. Ot sure how i got it so cheap...maybe as i was always a paying member? I paid as it was much quicker and no ads etc.
No worries. TBH, I can't remember exactly how much it was. I'd have to check. However, it was sufficiently minimal not to make me bother about paying it.
£20-50, or so a year, in the grand scheme of things, is shit all, and more hassle than it's worth to switch to something that's free, which I might well not like or find a ball-ache to use! :)
Marco.
$70 a year just to use a tiny bit of space on someone's server? Forget about it. Show me a few ads, that's fine by me. But if you don't think your making enough from that then tough luck because I'm not paying 70 dollar. Outrageous. It's worth at best five clams a year. That's my limit.
of course 20 bucks now isabout 20 sovs. used to be near 14... so price has gone up in real ters due to brexit... Bassa's :D it may get stopped soon if i get sick of life  not got much going for it at moment lol
as I said there are free options and there is tapatalk if you use mobile devices which these days most do. Google photos as well as imagur, flikr, cube, tinypic as well for a few.. No need to pay if your happy with slowness and ads, which is ok if you use it rarely. Martin and I for instance didnt use photobucket much, and our pics were still in place. I removed mine myself because I didnt agree with them giving no notice. that was ransomware imho
I've just checked my invoices, and the actual annual fee is $37.99, which for me is hee-haw, especially as I'm used to Imageshack and find it easy to use.
I'll be fucked if I can be arsed changing over to a free service, which I might find fiddly to use, simply to save £29! :nono:
Marco.
Lol - but you're a bit of a tight-wad! :D
I often spend more than that on wine for the weekend! I'm more than happy to spend that amount, annually, for image hosting. Life's too short, and it's one less thing to worry about, sticking with something I know and like :)
Marco.
A lot goes in to making a bottle of wine though. Whereas the image site are having to do the square root of jack shit to get your 40 bucks.
If Photobucket had said to everyone five bucks for the year shedloads of people would have paid it. Asking for a stupid amount means no-one will. Anyone using it for professional purposes will already have a pay account. All they have done is lose themselves hundreds of thousands of casual users for no gain. No-one left to read their ads, or to purchase their valued addeds. Really poor business decision in my book.
Don't disagree with any of that in the slightest, but the days of me 'fretting' over paying £29 a year, for anything, are long gone, so I'll be sticking with Imageshack.
I trust you can appreciate that :)
Marco.
hey it's up to you what you spend your money on. I'm just saying why I won't.
No worries. Each to his or her own
Marco.
I'm a little mystified. Am I correct in thinking people have been keeping their images only on external hosting sites, as opposed to on their PC and backed up onto other media, such as a memory stick or DVD?
No, since most pictures are taken using my phone camera they are backed up to a PC every so often and also to Google drive.
I only used photobucket as a means of posting them on here. Upload to photobucket and then share the link in my post which shows the picture on this forum.
