Who the hell says CD are dropping in price? I personally find they are as ever high priced generalising my preference in music genre.
Originally i started out burning over 3,000 of my vinyl albums onto CD-r before i flogged the records..I've only managed to locate some around 400 lagit CD replacements to date, it's a very expensive doo, as UK is a no go for rare prog albums i have to rely on Germany & USA, you be lucky at 5CD for hundred quid with shipping..in addition to the 3,000 list, i do have around 700-800 additionally listed albums i never bought on vinyl i have on CD-r i sourced elsewhere.. so i've got a very expensive & labourious journey ahead of me yet..

LP's were up to several quid in the early eighties - I have HMV tickets on many I bought then. My first hundred or so CD's were all £12 at least back in 1985 (I didn't remove the sticky labels from them and on Amazon, the MP3 downloads are often more expensive than a good used CD of the same......

Nay Dave best think i did was flog the vinyl i just loose the hands on & artwork thing i have to admit i miss
I wanted to play "Thick As A Brick" just now. I couldn't find the CD but thought that I still had the LP with the newspaper attached. No joy, I sold the LP along with a couple of hundred others a few years ago to a trade collegue who grabbed them with open arms..
Feeling very despondant, I finally found the CD (early issue, not the 24 bit remaster) so shall enjoy this shortly...

My policy with CDs is that I refuse to pay more than £6 - especially as 99% of what I buy is old stuff and they've recouped their costs and had their money ten times over already. Unless it's something I really, really have to have - of course!

Well given that many new releases are around £8-ish, and I remember very clearly how painful it was to pay about £15 when I started collecting as a poor teenager in about 1986, I'd say that yes, they are a lot cheaper that they were, especially as £15 in 1986 is equal to about £35 today.....
Hard to get items are a totally different matter of course.

As I recall a new LP was £5.50 in 1986 then they rapidly went up to £7.99 over the next eighteen months or so. £5.50 being by your calculation about £13 in today's money. What does a new release LP cost now? About £18 is it?

My first 2 cds were both by Saga...Silent Night and Images at Twilight..both German Imports. They were very dear..it was about 1988 ish.
Low volume pressings be it vinyl or CD will always command a premium price. They have to recoupe their costs. Andre do you ever try Cyclops records ? When I buy odd or rare Prog I always try there first. The guy who runs it also runs a prog record label too and his prices are very fair imho.

Looks to me like they use demographics in HMV for pricing. If you look at the kind of music most sort of middle aged blokes with a reasonable disposable income might listen to, they are much more expensive than the production line crap they market at teenagers these days, presumably as teenagers have a lower disposable income? I know they have more now than ever but I think you get the point.
Last CD I bought from HMV was Jeff Buckley's grace - for £3 ! I refuse to pay much more for any CD and will seek out cheaper sources if there is one I want in particular (play, amazon ebay etc) as I truly believe that HMVtake the p**s big time.

HaHa, that's what I paid for mine there. Don't care if I was being targetted or not; Oxfam had the cheek to ask £4 for a s/h copy in a scuffed case (the disc didn't look too clever either)!
I'm quite happy to indulge in the '2 for £10' offers and will pay more, but I do have a mental cut off point at £10. I have to really want the recording, or there has to be a very good reason for me to pay over £10. Sorry EMI, it will be a while before I buy the remastered Beatles from you.

I think that one slipped through the net! I have seen the likes of Floyd, rush etc at £16 for CD's that were released over 20 years ago....

This is the thing that maddens me all my CD's are very old 70's analogue recordings warranting the same tag as a fully Digital offering :steam:
Some of the Beatles remastered stereo discs are 7.72 in my local Asda.

Don't they just ! There used to be a big Virgin/Zavvi and A Fopp in Cardiffs main drag.. now they're gone HMV has the place to itself..

I bought a couple of 2nd hand CDs today from CEX, one of those places that buy your hardware and DVDs, games and CDs from you.
The one here in Southampton is quite big and they have a lot of CDs, some at very low prices. I picked up REM's Around The Sun and Accelerate for £2 and £2.50 respectively. To be fair, a lot of the cases are broken or cracked but as long as you're happy with that you can pick up a bargain. Mine have gone straight to lossless and into a storage box.

I think HMV pricing is a joke too. Go into Fopp (Scotland mostly I think? now)and look at the pricing 5£ for a lot of discs which are £10 in HMV...Why? HMV own Fopp :steam:

Financially HMV are in deep trouble, and unable to pay the interest on their bank loans. They have also been badly hit by on-line shopping from the likes of Amazon.
In the days before CDs, HMV were very bad at replacing bad LP pressings, but at least they had knowlegable staff Nowadays HMV are staffed by students who seem to know nothing at all, apart from the price.
In the last ten years I've seen several small and not so small local independent record shops disappear; forced out of business by HMV.
It wouldn't surprise me if HMV disappear in the next five years - and it wouldn't bother me if they did; apart from the fact that they also own Watermans and the former Ottakers bookshops.

My daughter was asked to recommend a good 60's female singer to a friend of hers a while back, so she said he should try listening to some Janis Joplin. Not knowing any better, he trotted off down to the local HMV and asked where he could find some JJ CD's.
He was told that was too specialist for HMV!

I picked up Depeche Mode's Sounds of the Universe for £3, but I passed on Doves' Kingdom of Rust for the same price.
They also had some Beatles remastered discs for £6 each. I saw Help!, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road but of course your local store's stock may vary.

If it's the newer version, yes. The one with the stereo and mono mixes on.
