View Full Version : Dust. What To Do About It?
It is the second half of the second decade of the 21st century - we should be living in domes on the Moon but we still don't seem to have an answer to this basic problem except for tedious manual labour, eating into what would otherwise be that most valuable commodity of all: Free Time.
Years ago I used to have an ioniser. Like a little pyramid thing, you sat it on a sheet of bacofoil and it attracted all the airborne dust to it. There was a more expensive one that didn't need the bacofoil and took the dust inside. I've no idea what happened to it, lost it on a house move probabaly, but did seem to work to an extent.
Is there not some modern equivalent? Other than getting a Stepford Wife of course? (Too much maintenance for me). That was decades ago I had that gadget, have they come on any? What do you do to combat dust without having to raise a finger?

No, ionisers are a real thing. They freshen the air too.
I've got an RCM, my records are dust and dirt free (to an extent anyway).
But there is dust everywhere, on the stairs, the kit, the shelves, the rack. I'm not willing to accept that in 2017 there is no automatic method or device that can be employed to prevent this.

Agreed, how do you stop the DUST !!!!! RCM's are great..... until you get the record on the Turntable.... THEN?.... where does that dust come from???????

a lot f it is your dead skin. then there is pollen, spores, bits of fabric etc....

As long as it's not iron filings based dust, then I just don't worry or bother about it. :D
I think rather than an employee I am looking for a device. Or possibly a gadget.
21st century folks, And we are still having to go round mopping up this stuff manually? That's not America. That's not even Mexico.
We know where dust comes from. We know what it is and how it behaves. There must be a tech solution.
There is only me living in my house but from the amount of dust and the sheer speed at which it builds up I must be shedding my bodyweight in skin every week. I dusted the turntable lid just two weeks ago, already got enough of a coating that it is almost opaque.
i showed you one ffs ;) im getting one too eventually. ive a robot hoover too . great machine

Or anything "offensive", just dust.. yeah same here... So much stuff all over the place, wires here there and everywhere, extra test gear, hi fi gear that won't fit in cupboards... it's just not practicable to try and hoover more than once every few months... it never gets any worse after 3 years, according to Quentin Crisp anyway!

I read recently that the "dead skin" theory was a urban myth.....most of your dead skin is trapped by clothing.......having said that, I have been known to ahem, "dance about " naked when the house is empty.......i'll leave you with that charming mental image!!!
back on topic.....I have my gear in a ikea bench with a sliding glass door.
I only open said door when the gear is powered up.....next to no dusting is thus required

I have a powerful Amcor ioniser which I bought in the 80s when living in Beckenham. I lent it to my Mother who smoked, and within a month there was 'marmite' dripping down the walls behind it. Yuch.
Yesterday I bought a S/H Kirby vacuum cleaner, very expensive when new, but as good as a Dyson, (which I think overrated and cheaply built), and will last a life time, the Dyson about 3 years.
I used to know a salesman for Kirby. Back in the '80s you were looking at a grand for the cheapest model.

Ionisers don't actually clean the air, they just give any give particulates a negative charge, which makes them attract to a nearby surface.
Thats why the smoker above got "marmite" on the wall...it was just tar in the air being ionised!
I've struggled with excessive dust for quite a while now...the only solution really is to vacuum more often and do bit of damp dusting.
If you can't do it yourself, just get a cleaner. A couple of hours a week at minimum wage is only £20.
Once you're on top of it the dust is controllable.
Just my two penneth worth.

These new "Swiffer" dust mops seem to work well. I mean, they are still manual, but work better than the old damp clothe or using furniture polish on everything. My ex used furniture polish until it was piled up on the tables! Drinks would stick to it! But, with a Swiffer on its wand, a quick pass over my gear once a week or so keeps it fairly dust free.
But that's why ancient ruins are always 30 feet underground! They stopped dusting and it eventually covered them up!

Dust ain't gonna clean itself!
My home can get bad (2 cats don't help) but I usually hoover once a week the main areas and everything else about once a fortnight. It's annoying because cat hairs get everywhere and it can look messy again within 48hrs but I refuse to hoover more than once a week. I dust my gear every 2 weeks, only takes 10 minutes and while I can't get to the wires at the back, a bit of dust build-up there is no big issue imo, long as the actual gear is clean. I usually dismantle my rack once a year and give it a thorough clean though.
I'm more worried about dust bunnies building up inside anything with vents. My older Marantz amp is quite dusty inside and I haven't tackled it yet because I'm not sure the best way to do it.
Have a cat too and I agree they don't help when trying to keep dust free.
I use Flash wipes on my furniture and electricals, looks very nice when it's freshly done too.
You'll get a slow build up of dust but will take a couple of weeks before you'll need to do it again.
Keeping on top of it is the key
I have found that using various sizes of paint brush with a lurking nearby hoover nozzle is quite good, brushing the dust towards the sucking.
You guys obviously have very unhelpful cats, mine is a dab hand with a duster.
I use a Pledge Fluffy duster, works very well. It holds the dust and cat hair instead of spreading it around and when it's clogged up just pull it off the wand and throw it away.

^ that's what I use to dust my kit. It works well.
Also as my amp has big vents, when not in use, I cover it with a bit of safety glass on felt pads to keep the dust and cat hair out.

Its a good thread topic because dust is the bane of everyone who has racks of hi fi eqiupment and music collections.
I was thinking the other day just how much of a pain it is keeping vinyl and other things dust free.
I dont know if there are affordable filters which work but it would probably be as expensive as kitting out a clean room environment.
Dust is one of the strongest arguments for minimalism and digital copies of music. All I know is that I have to empty my racks once in a while to give all the equipment and shelves a proper clean. It gets through my amplifier grills and into every nook and cranny
I have camera blower brushes for my hi fi and models. I keep some things in glass display cabinets. I have a swiffer pole(only for hard floors) and micro fibre cloths but the dust just keeps coming.
I like to think I run a clean home free of dead skin :). Its even worse when you see the tiny white dust mites making a move across a display panel (under a bright light when dusting carefully) How are they finding my dead skin on there :) It reduces the cosmetic appearance of perspex which has to be cleaned very carefully. I like to see glass used as much as possible for displays.
Dust is nothing new ...birth, dust, taxes, and death is how I see it .....ashes to ashes dust to dust :)

Ah, but look at this Amazon user review of the Pledge -- "Love this duster. Easy to put together and use. I have used cheap versions of this product from Aldi and Lidl's, but the Pledge version is much better picking up the dust "

Most houses leak air like a sieve.Trying to get rid of airborne dust is just about impossible.It would be like trying to aircondition a house with the windows & doors open.The only chance you have is with a really well sealed passive home with a filtered air to air heat exchanger fresh air system.
Since starting this thread, Martin decided to go down the cleaning girl route. She's been quite a revelation, actually, and has managed to transform this:

I'm trying out a Ioniser with a fan in the hope that it will collect the dust that goes on the system.
Much like an Ioniser and air filter.
So far this is not working, or if it is not very well.
Going to try vacuuming the room more often, cleaning out the Ioniser again soon and see if that works. Not 100% hopeful !
need a good level of filtration on hoover or it will make things worse.
