I found this site whilst mooching about on tweb - a web site abou digital radio that apears to be agaist dab... Thought it might be of interest to some of you

I found this bit about bit rates when trying to find out what my freesat box was giving me after noticing a few weeks ago that it sounded much better than dab

Also, this chap came in the shop the other week and asked if I had any ideas how to get higher quality recordings of the proms ... He was telling me he used to record it on open reel machines from fm and get really good results but for ease has been recording on to sd from dab in recent years and not been so happy with the quality... Anyway I suggested recording the audio from HD tv might be good, as an alternative to fm, I might be on to something... Obviously this is quite far off these forign flac broadcasts ... But it's better than 160kbps from dab

Anyway the reason for all this was like I said finding out how good freesat radio is, and to be fair, if you want a lot of choice at an average better quality then it seems to be a good option for uk stations!

British DAB is not great but, with a good DAC, the BBC radio streams off Freeview and Freesat will better my Quad FM Tuner.

There are internet streams that are even better than the Freeview and Freesat streams.

Do remember that the BBC sends data to FM transmitters over ageing 14bit digital links, and that most of the output will be from CD or professional digital recorders.

FM is not an analogue medium.

If you want to hear internet radio at it very best try

This is FLAC in an OGG container - there are not many softwares that will play it.

Foobar and VLC will.

Compare it with the same station streamed in OGG at 224Kb/s

im glad im not the only one that finds freesat radio to be very good, like i said a sec ago my tuner is poorly so i cant comment on the quality of fm compared, but i have been very supprired by freesat!

only got my iphone for internet at home at the mo, but im setting up the living room to be able to stream internet radio when talk talk get their ass in gear and send me a router!
but yeah, had a listen to the flac station a few months back, it was very impresive!

Bitrate is not everything. Radio Swiss Classic, listening to the 128Kb/s MP3 stream, I always enjoy.

It may be to do with how much dynamic compression and other messy tricks are applied before the music leaves the studio.

Nothing is wrong with FM.
Just some stations which want to broadcast on only one format (MP3/AAC).
And some manufacturers who want to renew the car radio market and sell new products. :(

Dunno, it was working before, but since the move it make no sound, still lights up, still gets a signal register on the vu meter at the apropriate frequencies, but no sound comes out... I'm going to investigate a bit fether - see if I'm just being a pleb, then was planning on posting a queery thred and see if anyone wanted to have a look at it and possibly do those upgrades off the tuner site you showed me...
Do you have any thoughts ?

I can't remember, does that model have an FM Muting button? If you've got it accidentally pushed in & you're not tuned to a signal, you'll hear nothing. When you hit a live frequency, the muting will switch out.
