Monkey boots or DM's?

Just been reflecting how I so often got an affordable option as a youngster due to my parent's lack of funds. I had a Tommy Gun instead of an action man and monkey boots instead of Dr Martins. Anyone else out there have monkey boots? Ironically I would love another pair in black. I honestly think they're cooler than DM's. Just saying.:rolleyes:

I had one pair but generally had DM's, we didn't have a lot of money but DM's seemed to last a lot longer than other shoes so my parents were willing to stump up the extra. DM's were definitely more comfortable. If your Tommy Gun was a Johnny Seven OMA I would say it was much better than an action man. My brother had had one for his birthday and on the day shot one of his friends in the temple with a grenade...... kids didn't bother with hospital for concussion in those days! They go for good money on ebay these days.

DMs for me, not the boots but the shoes. My mum thought they were hard wearing so didn't mind spending the cash.

I've worn DMs pretty much most of my adult life as shoes for work, my colleagues call them coppers shoes as you see a lot of police wearing them. Never had monkey boots but I do have a pair of kickers boots.... Quite retro and 80s.

Today I'll be digging out an old pair of DMs to take to Glastonbury, hoping the ground is better than last year and wellies are not needed. Some new gel insoles and a spot of dubbon and they'll be fine.

Had a pair of monkey boots about tweny five years ago. Never really liked them. Not worn DM's since my teens.

Normally wear hiking boots, with a change to sandals during warm weather. Don't wear normal shoes.

Had both and liked both depending on use etc. Docs were more comfortable but were inclined to split at sole and upper. Liked the shoe too. Also used to wear hiking boots in winter a lot. Got lots of snow and such here when I was younger so they were a boon to save the docs from dreaded tide marks

DMs always came apart at the sole. Never liked them. Bought some Dutch para jump boots for £14 at a surplus store in 1988, have done over 10,000 miles in them, still good as new.

Too heavy for normal everyday wear though, they have steel plated sole, heel and toe.

Always wear trainers or basketball boots for knocking about in. Would not wear sandals even if you put a gun to my head.

Yeah, they did. I could never get them in a satisfactory fit either. Always a touch on the big side or too small.

Late 60's early 70's dm's and monkey boots were mainly worn by "skins"-there were 2 main camps ,hairies and skins I was a "hairy.My main choice was wranglers or the slightly "meaner " and better quality levi's.I remember wranglers were £3.3.0 and levi's were £3.7.0

As an add on ,Levi's have been rubbish now for years,Lee's are now my first choice.

DM shoes, new pair every year for school, even though they were a fortune, because they lasted the full year (had to walk 3/4 of a mile once you got off the bus and the same on the way home). This was the 80's so obviously they were the pointy toe winklepicker versions :eyebrows:

I have had a few pairs since. Expensive and they never last long.

Never stopped wearing DM shoes still got a pair for work. They stopped splitting decades ago.

I used to be a DMs fan, but now I love the comfort of Clarks Wallabees. :)
