Which tuner ?? Advice needed please guys .

Ok so I've been on the hunt for a tuner , I am buying it for sound quality 1st off then build quality.
So far I've narrowed it down to and in no particular order .
Audiolab 8000t
Nakamichi st-7
Yamaha t-2
Revox B261
I'd love an ion fmt-1 to go with my other ion stuff but I was skint when the last one came up for auction so I've just about given up on one .
I currently use a Yamaha T-700 which I do enjoy but perhaps there's better !!
Advice much appreciated.
Budget is around £200-£250

Another good tuner is the B&O Beomaster 5000, that's if you can find one, vintage, but one of the best out there, will never sell mine.

The Pioneer TX9100 is another good vintage tuner.

The Beomaster 5000 was a FM only tuner from the late sixties. I believe the BBC used them as a reference tuner and Adam aka Beobloke from this very forum also has one.

I have had magnum dynalab in the past but just love the holographic sound of my bel canto fm1

pretty rare though but been using for a long time and its superb

I am sorry, sometimes a bit obsessive about stuff, especially the Dynalab.

My main speakers are Kef 105/3s .... I would never let them go !!!!!

I also advise you not to let the 105/4's go either...... you will live to regret it [emoji25]

I know..... been there, done that...... and lived in regret.


For two hoots, I would buy your 105/4s but just don't have the room...KEEP EM!!!!!

Sadly everyone will chip in with their fave, but not having heard all the options can't really offer more than that.

I took it upon myself a number of years back to see if the Tuner Information Centre (http://www.fmtunerinfo.com/) results applied to the UK, and for the most part they did. I wasn't prepared to pay the crazy money for the top ones but got close and the Audiolab 8000T was one I did get.

They rank the Audiolab as 6th behind these :'C- Accuphase T-109V - Very natural sound, good bass. Pinpoint imaging. Lifelike, three-dimensional sound, smooth extended highs.
1 (TIE): -C- Kenwood L-02T - Most natural sound, good bass. Pinpoint imaging. Lifelike, three-dimensional sound.
1 (TIE): -C- Burmester 978 - Natural, open and airy sound, good bass. Pinpoint imaging. Lifelike, three-dimensional sound with nice extended highs.
4: -C- Sansui TU-919 - The prince who could be king.
5: -C- Sansui TU-X1 - Very good sound top to bottom. Big soundstage, three-dimensional. Very slight diffuse sound.'

I personally would not rate the Audiolab before the Revox B760 and I think for the very small amount these sell for the Kenwood 5020 or 7020 are really the bargains out there. Boring and plain, but stunning.

While I haven't heard all the tuners on that list I have heard enough to feel the rankings are probably a very good guide. Frankly the top 5 usually sell for around £800 to over £1500 depending on where you see them Ebay Germany often has examples.

You will need a very good aerial to unlock what any of these tuners can do.

The 8000T I have has a some what scuffed top and the LED display is dim on one side, but it does work well. I could maybe be persuaded to sell it. I have the box and I think the instructions. The Kenwoods, nope over my cold dead body.

Fair enough. Not heard the Yamaha, so can offer no comment. The Kenwood however in my set ups bests the other 25 tuners I have including the Leak Troughline + Tim De stereo decoder.

McIntosh MR67 is very nice tuner.. probably the best valved tuner I've ever heard.

Wow !! And I'm glad you mentioned the Leak as everyone seems to like them but I'd read that they need very good reception.
My Yamaha is nothing special at all but it really is good compared to others I've had and it was only £15 .
I can't quite get my head around that tuners can cost over £500 mark given what's inside them compared to an amp or CD player or even speakers.

Mine came From the BBC and was used for the exact some purpose, an ex BBC engineer friend of mine from Wokingham serviced it and then gave it to me, very nice tuner.

Thing is all tuners need a good signal. I use a 6 element Yagi and a Magnum Dynalab signal sleuth. I now live much further away from the broadcast mast than I used to so the DSS was a useful addition.

Not heard many of the big American tuners but those MD tuners I had heard I was underwhelmed by. My view was that Audio Freaks had pumped the price up way too much and as such many vintage units offer better value for less. I was also underwhelmed by the Accuphase 101 ... pretty meh moment, sadly an expensive.... meh moment.

Before I started gathering up tuners I thought the Troughline the best I had, and it was, then it no longer was.

Thing is its easy to bang the drum for a cherished favourite until you compare it to whats out there, then you come to the realisation that it was really a rather knackered drum, with a torn skin.

I too have a Magnum Dynalab FT101, and of all the gear I own, it's the one piece I'll never part with. It makes FM sound like a high end source! And I only paid $300USD used, seems a lot of used ones around? And it works well, with the 3 precision tuning meters and switches for tweaking the signal, it is a pleasure to use.

If you are into FM then this is the baby you need.... however, it's only my opinion, but you won't be disappointed.

I can't recommend the Leak Troughline I'm afraid.. pretty poor in fact, but if anyone truly hankers after one I have plenty of them available. All will need an external stereo decoder. As will even a stereo Troughline as the original built in decoder is so bad that IMHO an original stereo Troughline doesn't qualify as hi fi! Really "smooth"..... as in probably nowt above about 8KHz!!

I can also build stereo decoders to suit any vintage tuner BTW
