3 and a half sodding hours of it, the other half is glued to it, and talking over it is met with a stern glare!
I can't be arsed to get up and do something else, so I'll probably end up sitting here and secretly enjoying it.

I never used to watch it because I generally don't like modern "pop" music but that mad Scandi metal band about fifteen years ago changed all that and got me into it. Lordy were they called ??
The last few years have been spectacularly staged and I'm very pro-Europe generally so I unashamedly admit to loving it nowadays :)
I think we'll be lucky to get off the blocks but for once it won't be about the music but politics. I think it'll be between us and Russia for the wooden spoon.
Italy look like they've hit all the right buttons with the lyrics and an annoyingly catchy "singalong" song though I don't know what the chuff that gorilla was all about ...

I said that about Take me out earlier, I warned her that it would be a slippery slope, if we watched that it would be TOWIE next, then before we knew it we would be watching Jeremy Kyle. Not worth the risk.

Lol... Thing is, Rich, why is she the one in charge of the remote control? Don't let her always get her own way, unless you're simply the type who just gives in for a quiet life!
In our house, the rule is (as agreed by both Del and I) that when we're together we watch what we BOTH want to see on the main TV. If either of us wants to watch something that the other hates, then the programme concerned is recorded and watched at a later date, by the person who wants to see it, when the other one isn't there.
Or, we take turns to watch the TV in the spare room, so that BOTH of us gets to see what we want and no-one's interests are excluded. It's called compromising! ;)
And yes, the Eurovision song contest is a joke, and has been for years. You could reunite The Beatles (even the dead ones) and nominate their song as the UK entry, and these days because of all the political voting, it would still finish near the bottom of the pile!
Plus, most of the so-called 'music' performed is simply mind-numbing commercial pap, and therefore utter shit... There is also way too much pandering to the gay community, thus creating 'anthems', from various countries, which simply appeal to that type of mentality. Not my thing at all, and so avoid it like the plague!

Yeah, it's a beautiful song, a wonderfully understated performance and I loved what the fella said about making it all about the music and not the "fireworks".
His sister was brilliant too - they could've made it a duet, I thought - and she reminds me of Bebel Gilberto. I'll be digging her albums out for a listen again tomorrow, especially if it's sunny :)

Graham said it was the best performance since Blue in 2011.
I've just been chatting to a Portuguese mate on Facebook and he said the sister of the guy who won is a big star over there and I've just been on YouTube to check out some of her stuff. She wrote the song itself.

Very varied - some jazz, some quirky light pop, alongside some more traditional sunkissed balladry like Bebel or indeed Astrud Gilberto back in the day.

Watched it with my daughter, we just like the comedy of it all, the music was, as always, pretty atrocious and the winning song really not my cup of tea. The Belgium entry seemed like a rip off of Arcade Fire.

Aye, a pantomime, more like, as everyone votes for their 'pals', and most of Europe now dislikes the Brits, for political reasons (especially since Brexit), hence why the UK entry always fails so miserably. Therefore, being nominated for such has become a laughable poisoned chalice!
As far as the UK is concerned, it's got to the stage now where no decent performer or band will want their reputation tarnished by being associated with such epic failure.

Just read the continuing trials of Marco in his quest for Eurovision enlightenment ;)
Graham Norton is one of the main reasons the whole thing improved, IMHO.
His presentation came along around the same time as the reinvention of the event into something more modern and spectacular and with it all being very camp anyway he dovetails beautifully with his bitchy little comments about .. well, just about everything.
He knows his stuff though and is naturally funny and quick off the mark - it's a live event, remember, so to be able to host it so well is an art on a par with a Jeff Stelling Saturday afternoon.

Ok, just had a quick listen and I'm afraid the Portuguese winning entry does nothing for me, sorry... Dreary, slightly effeminate, sleep-inducing pap! Not helped, I suppose, by not liking many male vocalists performing ballads...
For me, that's mostly a female thing, or perhaps rather that I prefer the female voice performed in that way, which brings us to Luísa Sobral. Now, that's more like it! :thumbsup:
And yes, I also like Bebel Gilberto :)

I've got nothing whatsoever against gay people, indeed some of them can be really funny, but I'm just not into 'camp TV', or music, for that matter. When occasionally watching the X-Factor, for example, and you get the ubiquitous gay boy-band act, and they start flouncing around the place with their ridiculous antics and overtly 'showy' homosexuality, it just turns me off! :spew:

First I'd heard of her until you mentioned it.
Apart from the classic crooners such as Nat King Cole, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, etc, who all had real SOUL and EMOTION (essential traits if you're to sing and portray ballads correctly), only Michael Jackson, and George Michael really did it for me. Ironic I know, as he was gay, but he didn't come across that way when he sang.
The sweet-sounding 'sultriness' of the female voice (along with previously stated traits) is generally for me what makes them better at singing ballads, and which allows me to 'connect' more with the words and whole meaning of the song, if you get me? :)

Quality, mate... Ella was the all-time queen of vocalists. Our tastes, in that respect, are in virtual alignment :cool:
Getting back on topic, for me, the heyday of Eurovision was in the 70s and 80s (and the 60s before it, but that was pre my time). I actually quite liked it then, when it was more of a simple singing contest (largely minus the 'gay fanboy' aspect) than anything else. You can't beat the Buck Fizz entry for giggles! :eyebrows:

Not sure which is worse, Eurovision or this thread....
I enjoyed Eurovision, from the cringe-worthy presenters, people taking it way too seriously and poor performances, I enjoy the comedy aspect and think Graham Norton is a great replacement for Terry Wogan as our commentator.
