uuugh... Can't stand Phil Collins.
'Easy Lover' with Phillip Bailey. Only good tune he ever did. Worst singer ever, grates on me. Good drummer, though.
my sentiments exactly BlackAdder. Now that i have yr attention why do u not recommend the metal O ring idlers for the td124 ?
(i ll allow myself to go off topic here )
I liked him with genesis even when Gabs left. Not had much to do with his solo stuff
Think he played a great train robber too

I put his best of album on a few weeks back on tidal to see if I'd like him with age, as I never listened to him in the 80s etc. I can say sadly I didn't like him again.

I've always liked his stuff personally... apart from the odd exception... I vastly prefer Genesis with him at the helm! There are certain bands and musicians who it seems to be perennially "cool" to hate but which are actually very good IMHO, Collins, Dire Straits and Simply Red/Mick Hucknell being the first to spring to mind!

Agree with you on dire straits and simply red because they had / have song writing talent to write great melodies, but Phil Collins melodies are always a bit 'dad rock', a bit grungey and kind of 'I'm an old man' and know how to rock but who doesn't have much pure song writing talent. A bit like James Blunt pretends to be a hip crooney young singer who hasn't got much talent, a bit like Ed Sheeran too. All phils songs are kind of on one level.
Sorry again to Shahrin, but just giving my opinion. A bit of a rant, now over. Lol.

The Collins stuff I'm very familiar with is "No jacket required" and "Hello I must be going" and I can't really fault either... Good song writing and melody are the most important things in music to me and I reckon Phil has it on these albums. IMHO Ed Sheeran is very talented but unfortunately using his skills to do "highly commercial with a twist" and make lots of money... I suppose one can't blame him. I hope he shows his true talent once he decides he doesn't need to do commercial any more! The stuff I'll never "get" is the likes of The Fall, some experimental German bands, most death metal etc etc (and I'm sure there are much better examples) where there seems no attempt to be "musical"... it's all just shouting/talking and aggression over what could be dust bins being banged together. How anyone could like this is beyond me and I certainly wouldn't call it music!
Loved him at the helm of Genesis ,and have most of his solo albums !
I cant (or rather dont) relisten to a lot of his solo stuff myself either , but Duke was a fabulous album IMO.
I think maybe his slight big headedness , later on ,didnt do him too many favours :)

80s-tastic! If you don't have a 'wee shimmy-ette' to that, around the lounge, you're dead!:dance:

I'd play the teena Marie track to the top gun soundtrack instead.
It's so cringey it's actually good. Lol

No, I wasn't forgetting that. It happened, and we allowed it to happen.
Haha - nah... That, and 'In the air tonight' evoke some great memories for me, from during 'my era'! :)
Marco.
Yes, there is some nostalgia. But as a sound it was strictly of its time. The musical equivalent of rolling up the sleeves on your sports jacket.
Funnily enough ,'You Cant Hurry Love ' was one of my favorites , but I loved the Supremes doing the original just as much too!!

Interesting title for a book and a tour. Good read too. I likes his first few solo albums and some of the genesis albums headed up by him.
Not dead yet eh? According to a friend of mine in the industry he isn't far off. It remains to be seen if if he makes any of the gigs and if he does how he will cope with them.
nothing to add really

Even though I have a huge passion for Prog Rock and early Genesis I simply adore 'A Trick of the Tale' which has to be their finest ever album and certainly their most accessible album before slipping into dire mediocrity.
Of the stuff that Phil Collins wrote from his own heart, my favourite is definitely 'The Roof Is Leaking' from the Face Value album. Fantastic on vinyl, OK on CD. When I was young..!
Folk said I would never get over my hatred of Phil Collins....
but take a look at me now. :D

I think i would have to include 'A Trick of the Tail' in my all time top 20 Albums & possibly Wind & Wuthering but not really into Phil's Solo stuff

I was such a die hard Prog Rock fan that I just wouldn't accept anything by Genesis that didn't feature Peter Gabriel but as time has gone by I have realised that the two intermediate albums by them were simply brilliant.
In fact, of all the albums Genesis created until their departure from reality, my now personal favourite is indeed 'A Trick of the Tale'. It has this stunning blend of Prog Rock fantasy with a more commercial overtone. As a Genesis fan since 1973 I won't even consider with any seriousness the utter drivel they produced after 'Wind and Wuthering'.
Of the Phil Collins solo stuff though, I think that 'Face Value' was a damn fine album. Having read his book I now find that I dislike him even more than I used to.
What is in his book that's so bad?

I don't recommend them because I've had one and I found it to be more noisy than the conventional ones. I had my original idler refurbished by Hugo recently and the result is great.
Hope that helps. :)

Apparently, the truth.
All very cryptic. Do I have to buy the book to find out? (Not that I would of course).

He didn't look well on the last series of 'House of Fools' with Vic & Bob. Anyone see that? I didn't recognise him at first.
I don't know what why he's ill but hope he gets better.
Best track I can tolerate is 'in the air at night'... I had the lamb that did something on broadway album and it was okay... best track was one called Carpet Crawlers... love that track to this day. In all, a bit too 'prog' for me... still a good listen.

What a coincidence - I was playing this album earlier today (Friday)
All decent tracks and prefer the mid 70s and earlier albums to the later offerings. I always felt that once Peter Gabriel left, too much influence seemed to come from Mr. Collins and they moved from prog rock to pop: At which point I felt they had sold out. That may not be true, but it was as I saw it.
I heard him being interviewed on the radio a few years ago and he was describing a medical condition (I didn't hear the earlier part of the discussion which must have stated what that actually was) which he was having test for and were it to progress would prevent him from drumming ever again.
Not sure if he was the first drummer to record the 'gated' drum sound but certainly one of the first to be credited with it and 'In the Air Tonight' jumps out as typical of that style. I believe it was used on Peter Gabriel's ' Melt' album, again drummed by PC and if the story was correct, all the drumming was performed without use of cymbals !
As you may guess, I like him as a drummer.

LMAO, I was around fourteen when that happened and I loved it. I adore Prog Rock but have to admit that it really is living in the past for me. Very fond memories.

For me, Queen only ever did anything great back around 1973. Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack. The rest is the equivalent of Phil Collins singing You Can't Hurry Love.

Singing under PG- tend to agree, but his drumming was exceptional - hardly noodling in the PG years. and after IMO.
He also played drums in Brand X and did a session with Robert Fripp, and many offshoots like
Robin Lumley Marscape and Anthony Philips. Listening to Genesis Live, it has drumming no one else
could ever do.
