Dentists...

I went to the dentist's today and had a checkup and registration. Apparently I need two crowns and a drilled tooth, x-rays and a clean and polish. The cost; £1076.00...!!! Yes, you did read it right. Just what sodding planet are these people on...? I get from my business 350 a month as disposable income. How the hell do they ever think I am going to get this work done...? Living in a dream world springs to mind.

We have had to sign up to Denplan as our dentist went private. Then I realised we could claim half the monthly cost back from Medicash so its ok.
Medicash is very worthwhile especially for a family.

Get a second opinion. I had a new dentist come to the practice I was registered at after the previous dentist retired, and he found a couple of issues (need for fillings) that hadn't been mentioned before. I wasn't convinced so I went to another dentist who did the usual initial consultation. That was 3 or 4 years ago and no one has mentioned any need for fillings since. And my teeth feel fine too. Sometimes you just get someone who sees a mouth as an easy source of income...

Dentists and vets .. Any private health care that is normally suported by insurance companies are a joke! All prices are base on what they know they can swindle out of the insurance, people without insurance are buggered! Our cat stayed 4 nights in the vets for observation whilst he had crystals in his urine ... No operations just tablets, one sedated xray and acomodation final cost £850 .. Thankfully we are insured (pet plan are very good)
thank god for the nhs, it might be a bit of a shambles, and it might have it's problems, but you gotta have respect for free health care!

After about 10 years of avoiding the dentist...I eventually had no choice. Part of a tooth fell away. Fine for a week or so and then agony. I had forgotten how bad this sort of pain was. So I had to find a dentist NHS...which I did then wait 2 weeks to get an appointment (still in agony)... However after a week the pain went away.

This dentist is okay. He showed me the X rays and pointed out the issues. We discussed it and the work is being done in phases. I must say I don't feel as if I am being taken for a ride by him as I know and can see the issues. So far I am happy with whats been done.

If I have a gripe it is that despite being out of work I am not entitled to any help with the costs.

I must be honest and say I don't like having any dental work being done...way to much discomfort...but I like the pain of a tooth gone wrong less..so I will be sticking with him.

NHS dentists are fine, Neil. They are just rare as rocking horse sh-- :)

Our cat had exactly the same thing Hamish, four years ago or so. We weren't insured at the time but stumped it up. We are now (though it doesn't cover pre-existing conditions). Our chap survives on wet food only now. We had him on dry food for his weight and that seems to have caused the urinary problems. Anyway, he's happy now, and we keep him on rations!

I thought I would have a problem, but no. This one was recommended to me by a friend. I went and asked NHS, and was told "that will do nicely Sir". This one is only a few miles away from where I live too :rave:

However 20% off the bill is still a fair bit of money...hence breaking it into phases of work. Most important first and less last.

I kept up with a trusted private dentist and hygenist until we moved here and we were lucky enough to find a recently moved practice with NHS vacancies (it's full now). I feel as if I'm treated like another plate of meat being processed through the system and the hygenist was horrid. At least the dentist understands and does a quick scrape-n-polish when I visit...

My experience of hygienists is that they like to make sure you realise you should have tried harder between sessions!

Denplan is a bit of a joke really, £17/month for the most basic care, all they do is monitor you until a tooth needs removing. All you're paying for is the peace of mind of having access to emergency treatment should the need arise. Suppose I'd better remake the appointment I missed before Xmas with the hygienist a.k.a. the sadistic demon bitch from the boiling depths of hell:eek:.

We give ours this, it's expensive (£45 for 6kg) but anything for my little 'soldier'

I think we get two check ups a year and a hygenist spit and polish job for £22.50 a month. Thats for a family of four. We can reclaim 50% off medicash.

Wow. Absolutly no sympathy for people that don't visit the dentest on a regular basis or look after their teeth. I go no less than three times a year for check up & they have done nothing at all to my teeth for five years but i still go for the check up's.

The teeth you have now are your last, oral hygene is number one on my list of priority.

Good point, the trouble is re drilling them out only weaken's the tooth more to a certain degree, i was told this as i have a filling from when i was younger i fancied replacing to be on the safe side, i took his advice & left alone (if it aint broke don't fix it)..but you clearly have no option in your case shaun.

Loverly choppers so he keeps telling me..I have to come forward & say i have lost a few because of a dental clinic i went to at a young age not cleaning out the tooth properly before filling, they have failed at a later date in life.which is absolutly no fault of my own but very cross about..
