Actually so many people posting on it these days it isn't worth the effort it used to be back in 2011 when I first covered it and not many other people did. Now everyone is in on it.

But will be there tomorrow nonetheless. My media will be late coming suggest surfing elsewhere til then.

So I am in the LV room. All of a sudden Kevin shouts "get out" to a couple of Mundorf guys.

Why? Because one on them lifted a crossover lid with a substantial metal puck on top of it. It slid and went into the side of one of the Olympian subs at £200K a pair.

Nice work. Not:D

Most interesting room for me was the Tune Audio one wirh the new Avaton horn. Mobile pic below.

In terms of ease, space, warmth, soundstage and smoothness they beat anything else there.

Be careful though. When it comes to dynamics they aren't going to blow your mind. At all.

Very expensive Trafomatic amps too.

Speakers 220K Euros I think Jack from BD Audio said. Not cheap.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170519/d8be4a1fd6ba0818331611c1cc8bda15.jpg

The best system there in my opinion. Trios Luxury Edition and 3 bass horns. Superb dynamics, resolution and scale.

Price on demand. The Trios have super beefed up frames. Worth paying for over the standard model if you want zee best.

Will cover in greater depth later.

Some mobile snaps.

Had a live drummer who looked coked up playing through them. The speakers sounded like they were on coke too. Super high performance way beyond anything else there I think.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170520/cffb37aac9db22c6ef4e4cdd739027ce.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170520/2880db4ffc2ff81899977ee3b34f359c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170520/ace250a67d2b58f866731e20ae40d00d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170520/179d624349644b3a3d83298fdb1bb61f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170520/5cb967c33a3b0b66368b410caca8a758.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170520/581fb80e8a0f38edd190568a1a38d6eb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170520/7c78cab13824a43acbba27f66c5fcdb0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170520/4afd0a62353daf79e28906f62713ac6d.jpg

Erm, haven't you heard of a dictionary or phrase book, daftee? ;)

It would be very unusual too, based on my experience of visiting Germany, for no-one there to speak any English (as it's very much an English speaking country)... In any case, with a bit of effort, you'll always get by!

When i was there a German in hotel, who was barman/chef, said if i come across anyone who doesnt speak enough English to get by, then not to waste my time trying to converse as he will be not worth talking to :eyebrows: He said this and meant it.

Lol... Indeed.

I've been to Germany umpteen times, and to various different parts of the country, and NEVER had an issue with folk not being able to speak English. The same applies in Austria, where we were last year. In fact, English is taught there in all their schools!

In any case, for me (if I don't already speak it), learning some words of a new language, in order to communicate with locals, is all part of the fun of travelling abroad

Rockport / Soulution sounding very coherent. I vastly prefer these to the larger side firing woofer efforts I heard a while back. These speakers do good bass in my book.

A bit more Tune. I am completely unsurprised to see a brace of EML valves in the power amps as the sonic signature reminded me a bit of their 45 solid plate, Lampizator Special 45 and 274B valves.

The name of the game with EML is a huge spacious sound. That works with these horns but is less convincing in my room with my speakers.

Looks great - typical Bavarian eatery (and food)!

I prefer the Pils-style (lager) beers to anything dark, so usually have whatever's local of that type. The wheat beer is also good. Love the nice glasses they usually serve it all in, too! :)

I think that must've been the case, mate (extreme misfortune), as I can assure you that's far from the norm. As I said, they teach English at school in Germany, as part of their curriculum, and have been doing for some time, so aside from your average punter, for anyone under 30, English is liable to be their second language :)

Aside from that, don't you see it as a bit of fun/challenge to go abroad not knowing any of the lingo, and try and make yourself understood? For me, that's all part of the experience!

Oh - the Tucker was better looking than that!

As I expect you know the Tucker had headlights that were coupled to the steering. I still can't see the point of the third headlight on the VW.

Me too. TBH it does look much better in the flesh.

Third headlight is just styling over engineering I suspect. But then again it is more light.

It's a Tatra from Czechoslovakia. A wonderful car in its day. Rear mounted air cooled V8 engine. Highly sought after!!

Around for some 157 million years, these fellas are just hanging around waiting for us to go extinct. So show them some respect.

They apparently all own reference quality hi-fi systems that they all keep completely schtum about. So don't you go letting on.

Shit. That mobile shoots a pretty good video as shown on the LG OLED I have at home. The turtles & TEAC look amazing, so enough light and it does good. Falls short on stills, though. And shame about the mic. But £400 quid Chinese mobiles aren't bad now, in this case a OnePlus 3T. The silly good spec beats Google Pixel and Apple iPhones at half the price. Recommended.

Anyway, more media Monday evening,

Let's be nice to Luxman.

Considering the modest nature of the speakers, this room full of Luxman kit sounded very good in the flesh. Love that valve amp. Really was good this room. And some of it is almost vaguely affordable.

Video to follow. I am going to have to use YouTube, as the alternative I had in mind just won't do the job as hosting on vBugletin:D won't work.

I'd like to plug the M-900U into the Apogees I have to say. Could do a good job.

Anyway, back in the LV room, the first shot shows the damaging puck and if you zoom in, it shows the damage to the veneer mentioned earlier.

In some sense lucky, as this is an el cheapo version of the Olympian:D.

I've batched a load of YouTube videos but it'll take a good while to upload. There are quite a few, but unfortunately some of the good videos are compromised by an RX100 fault that appeared in my camera. It makes a load of noise in the video sound as some sort of lens gearing goes nuts. It is annoying, but you can hear through it so I may post some of those later because otherwise they are good vids.

Anyway, so MSB pics, including the new DAC they have been working on. Playing MQA at the time. I wasn't mind blown at the time. But their kit is very good.

Once again I really found rooms to vary depending on what time you were in there, the volume, and obviously what was playing at that time. So easy to get misled and come to the wrong conclusion. A point I always try to make.

Atlantic GG. This room was dead sweet, really. Playing crap I'd never listen to in a million years, but FWIW it did sound really nice. Much better than the Aeries Cerat gear that cost a lot more money. Seriously - much, much better. In the general scheme of things not killer, but very pleasant nonetheless.

You'd be wrong! ;)

The Cor has been in development for four years and was originally conceived as purely a unit for PMC to use when tuning their own loudspeakers, but developed into a commercial product. It was developed totally in-house and they even recruited a new Electronic Engineer who has been working largely on nothing else since he started with the company.

It's going to retail for £5000 and will be made in batches of 30, so it is very much not something that PMC are banking their future on. As an aside, I thought it sounded very nice indeed.

Tune Audio / Trafomatic as per earlier in thread, this time with a video. Refer to earlier for SQ comments.

The video makes the pics redundant, really, so watch it plugged into yer hi-fi system. You'll pick more up about SQ than I can say. But obviously nowt like being there.

Seriously, and I mean quite seriously like that TT lookswise.

Wilson / Nagra.

I'm surprised I like these in red, but I do.

One thing you will probably never hear at a show is what a large Wilson can do with ample Watts and music with some serious bass content. They can play seriously loud and hold it together. If you ever get the chance, try it.

If you've never respected Wilson before, you will learn some respect pretty quick:D You needn't like them, but you WILL respect them;)

Big system. Big money. Good sound with scale generally when I was in there, probably better than this video gives clues about TBH.

No wow moments, just good moments. Suspect I could be more impressed with the right material being played.

Gabel / CH Precision - big and small.

Big - very nice, I have to say. Very nice indeed. Righteous sound in here. A bit hard to fault on the material I heard. Sterile maybe. But maybe not. I'd really like to live with this for a good while to check it out properly. I'm sure it could do a lot more than I heard.

Unfortunately, you need the big ones:D

Are those square drive units ribbons or something weird?

User211

Silbatone / GIP

The stills might be on my phone. I must have around 400 pics.

Anyway, after resetting my head in 2011 with the WE 16A, and doing even better playing Led Zep's Whole Lotta Love in 2014 via 12A, 13A, this, for me, was a huge disappointment.

There's three speakers in view, two of which are GIP. The big ones with the top mounted horns are WE. Only half the bottom section is there, as the height of the room does not permit the full setup.

Just did nothing for me really, GIP or WE. The question is why? Programme material and volume? No. Even Led Zep didn't work for me with this set up. I stayed in there for a good while. Nothing excelled.

You could argue what you heard was nicely natural a lot of the time. And that would be fair. But things could get rough and I did hear some pretty blatant distortion going on.

Bummer.

They make some pretty special gear IMHO. Only the newish Symphonia speaker, which attempts to mate a ribbon tweeter with a horn mid range and bass unit, was an epic fail.

Why? The room was tiny. This was a real issue as you couldn't sit far away enough for the units to give the auditory illusion of working together.

All I could easily hear was a lagging, slow bass, a mid range that was disjoint and too forward, and a ribbon treble unit that didn't sound as though it had broken in, or just didn't like the driving electronics. I suspect the former, but could be wrong.

The ribbon did display a hit of Apogee in its nature, as you would expect. And having used fresh ribbons on a number of occasions, you have to get a good few hours on them before they don't sound like this one appeared to (in other words bad/shit). The other killer with ribbons is you had better make sure they like the hardware, as they will ruthlessly dislike some amps and sources. Smear and excess sibilance are sure signs of an issue but more so in terms of an unbroken in ribbon than driving electronics. Though both can do it.

Despite that the quirky look of the speaker is quite cool. Well I think so...:)

No video. One of the darkest rooms if not the darkest. The only reason you can see anything here is the invention of flash:D

The speaker costs a mere £75K in this basic finish but you can top £100K. Spend £1K or less on a top 2nd hand mini monitor and do better. Really. Or put these in a much bigger room and listen again after 200 hours of use.

Hi Justin, I was Munich but I totally forgot you were there. (Petrat was in attendance as well).

Totally agree with you on some of the best sounds in show those Tune Audios were absolutely stunning, as was the Avantgarde Rig (pity about the relentless Pink Floyd though you'd think they could have been a bit more original). The Silbatone rig was similar, 8w driving a 1930s cinema setup, though with a more creative choice of music. Not real world though, as with the Avantgardes, it was more of a PA setup than a hifi (anything designed to entertain literally hundreds of people isn't really hifi in my view which at times should be as much about a couch and a large whisky as much as it is about music).

My favourites were a bit more prosaic ... the Thoress room was interesting, Reinhart Thoress's phono pre is stunning something I'd love to put up against the EAR 912. He also had a pretty cool set of cartridges made in Munich by a Singaporean guy, these sounded great but a bit pricey for something that isn't really a brand yet, and his own speakers.

The Hecos - the little single driver ones - provided the biggest surprise of the show, absolutely lovely. I'd love to hear the big ones too. And the Silberstatics could almost tempt me away from Tannoys if I had 25k Euros sitting spare - room-filling panels, better than any Quads I've ever heard. Driven by 140w single ended monsters, not at all what you'd expect to pair giant panels with.

All in all though I found much of this utterly giant show a bit samey - maybe 70-80% of the rooms were running heavy, expensively-veneered multi-driver, not terribly efficient floorstanders, with whapping great solid state monoblocks and zzzzz streaming front ends, in many cases it was clear the digital element was the weakest link. The best rooms in my view were all playing vinyl and most had valves as well. (EAR's reel to reel rig was pretty cool though).

A special mention in this regard went to the Wiener Lautsprecher company that had a very enjoyable hour-long lecture and demonstration of a reproduction 1819 Fortepiano from the lovely Viviana Sofronitsky - playing Schubert, Haydn and Mendelssohn - though unfortunately they then rather embarrassed themselves by playing recordings of same through their speakers. We concluded that the front end solid state electronics (streamer or the preamp) were the problem rather than the speakers, which seemd actually to be pretty good, but all in all it was a wonderful demonstration of the inadequacies of hifi compared to the real thing!

And the prices ... well they can only make some of us cheapskates feel a bit smug ....

If you mean the smaller horn in the mouth of the large one Shaun, at a guess, I'd say that's a tweeter, probably with their own horn flare mounted to a compression driver of some sort. I'd expect the big horn to cover a very wide band including midrange.

The mid range horn is the gold bit. Dunno what driver. The gold bit is connected to a black tower. That has an 18 inch woofer in it according to Jack from BD Audio.

Silberstatic.

I went in here twice.

Each time I heard a lot of clarity and speed, but no bass. Huge panels on these. Some Fat Freddy looking type dude seemed to be really into them. I can kind of see why, but I just didn't hear any LF to speak of at any time. I stand corrected if somebody heard some.

The video shows no signs of bass, but lots of speed. That sort of perception occurs when bass is lacking, though. And also, the camera mic ignores low bass anyway, but it can pick up more than we hear here.

The speakers are suspended up off the floor and were a long way from the front wall. Maybe re-positioning would have helped with LF. I think it would.

Better results from the Audio Exclusiv stats which I may cover later on. They were volume constrained, though. Panel buzz issues at what I would call not loud.

Maybe I am being too honest here. I'll never make a hi-fi reviewer, not that I have ever aspired to be one. What I thought is what you get. Like it or not. But there is no intention to attack or upset. There is however a high priority attributed to reporting what I heard and perceived as accurately as I can within obvious effort constraints. I'm not spending hours on this.

Interesting Justin ... music on the video sounds dire (who on earth spend 25k Euros on speakers to listen to eurotrash!) when I went in as I recall they were playing some jazz I think from the TT, it seemed the bass was both there and realistic. They had several sizes there, I took their leaflet, the big ones (which were on when I went in) supposedly measure from 33hz at -3db, which is in theory better than my Tannoys (36hz at -3db in those cabs of mine), no lack of low bass from those.

Actually the Kingsound panels were even better, same sort of money, vinyl front end, very enjoyable.

Thoress:

Interesting, Tom. I've long lusted after Thoress gear, as I just love the retro styling and design principles, but have never heard any of it, so it's good to know you were suitably impressed.

Would I be right in thinking that the sound it produces isn't of the smoothed-off, 'warm & cuddly' nature, so often representative of high-end valve gear?

Hecos - the little one was an absolute star:

The Hecos - the little single driver ones - provided the biggest surprise of the show, absolutely lovely. I'd love to hear the big ones too.

That looks interesting - a major manufacturer doing a full range, single driver speaker. I wonder how it will compare against Omega etc, particularly when fed by something simple but lovely, like an OTO SE.

Maybe I'm getting cynical, or maybe I need a year off as I've been to every High End Show since 2008, but I didn't enjoy it as much this year. There was a lot of truly dreadful sounding things to my ears and even the bonkers stuff with ridiculous price tags that usually makes me smile wryly just annoyed me this time. I even got right to the end of Friday, where I usually head back for a final half hour in whatever turns out to be my favourite room, and just went for a coffee instead!

In fact, the only wry smile I did manage was on hearing the same percussion track a few hours apart in different rooms. In one room it was played through a massive pair of horn loudspeakers with a close-on six figure price tag and in the other, through a pair of dinky £2000 standmounters. Through one of these, it was a shouty, hard and thoroughly unpleasant mess with absolutely no bass definition to speak of and, through the other, it was tight, focused, and with surprising punch and real texture to each drum strike. I'll leave you to guess which speakers were responsible for which sound...

There was some good stuff there, though and, overall, I'm glad I went, but I might have a year off next year.

Yes, the new Heco single-driver was my favourite product of the show. I went back several times, and heard a wide range of music being played ... a real-world speaker that pressed all my buttons, so to speak :D

As Tom said, the Avant-garde trio room was an impressive PA system ... see those stacked bass-bins  Would have loved to hear what they could do with something other than PF's The Wall, though

I was particularly looking forward to the Kondo room, but it was maybe held back a bit by the Kaiser Kawero speakers employed, plus they never strayed from small-scale audiophile recordings. So not wholly convincing imo, although very pretty sounds.

An even bigger disappointment was the big MBL system, which was particularly bad, offering a painful mix of excessive bass plus excessive treble ... a truly exaggerated, unreal presentation, that the Germans crowds seemed to love, judging from the consistently packed room.

TBH, it's such a huge show that it's quite easy to get over-whelmed. My 'take-away' was a reminder that I actually do love what simple single-driver speakers can offer ... the Heco, a Supravox, and a couple of Fostex-loaded horns were all memorable to my ears.

Actually I felt the Kondo room sounded utterly rubbish, those speakers sounded hopeless ... what on earth were they thinking? - thin and insubstantial, detailed and 'hifi' but no fun at all.

If you fork out for Kondo surely you want to luxuriate in the sound? Wasted opportunity.

Sorry Marco!

Actually it seemed to me to be very neutral - in that way it has commonality with the EAR 912 and indeed the sound seemed reminiscent to me. No soft/tidied up sound, but no hash or solid state nasties either. Very dynamic.

The phono pre has I think six inputs all configurable for mono, for impedance settings etc. On the front there is tweakery for the rolloff and turnover of the recording selected (actually I have this available to me anyway, an Esoteric Re-equalizer wired in the tape loop of the EAR), effectively this gives not just equalisation control for pre-RIAA recordings, but also a tone control for the settings. For classical music (and a few jazz recordings) this is really valuable and I do tend to use mine to clean up badly mastered LPs, so I know I would make use of this feature.

In the room we did actually try out an early stereo, and old Archiv choral recording (most of which in my posession sound a bit rubbish). Sure enough this didn't sound fantastic but it was the fault of the recording not the phono pre - but I guess the fact that it didn't pretty it up is something of a good thing - the tweakery clearly has its limits.

Actually for me the sense was like a modern, much more transparent version of the old tilt/Quad preamp controls - which I used to really love (and it's a pain no-one has them any more).

As for the styling, I'm totally with you on that, it looks like 50s lab gear, like you are at the controls of a Magnox power station. What's cooler than that?

Mayer's room was a disaster, the speakers in use looked like two giant blue umbrellas (clearly some sort of horn) and they sounded like a 60s Roberts radio turned up too loud!

When I looked in again they had changed to the smaller wooden ones, which were better but I didn't get time to have a proper listen.

Trios and Basshorns

The only horns there with any dynamics to speak of. And indeed they really are dynamic, especially with 3 basshorns.

In the same room as 2011 again they only had one set of basshorns then.

Dynamics were way 'up there' when they were being used as a PA system.I have a 10 minute UHD video of the drummer but will spare you all it. It did a pretty good job as a PA system.

When playing The Wall on vinyl it was not so good as you could easily hear the limitations of vinyl on such a revealing system. When on digital it did sound fab on electronic stuff. They can go effortlessly loud.

There's quite a bit of bite to the sound but good bite if that makes any sense. That keeps it interesting.

Like the Tune Audio room they were stuck in a repeat loop for the material they played. But the stuff they did play was complex, whereas the simple mixes going through the Tune Audio falls straight into Macca's earlier point:D

The video doesn't sound great sonically. But it was good there. Really.

2) Girl with guitar (one particular album in particular seemed to be doing the rounds, bloody awful it was too)
3) Plinky plonk elevator music

Anyway, here's the first stereo recording ever made.

This guy tried, and had a good nature to him. Definitely one of the best chaps there at doing the job the rest were supposed to be doing, and was in his element messing around with Trinnov digital effects.

If there isn't much bass the cabinet colouration isn't an issue with these and they can sound really quite good.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Many people hate the looks of the old Quad 57s - I love them. You, obviously, love the look of your MBLs - I don't. Suum cuique

Regarding the Thoeress gear, it does look a bit like the old Heathkit gear of the '60s, but it's a utilitarian look I quite like.

No, not really. I find them a bit ugly, but not unacceptably so with the grilles on - if I preferred to use them with grilles off they wouldn't be acceptable at all - they then look truly hideous.

I put up with my mild distaste for the looks because I love the sound.

I couldn't be 'aving with the stripey veneers that some folks love, either. Yeeurgh.

So I sat down and cheated last night.

I played only recordings I know sound stella and tried to juxtapose what I heard with what was at Munich.

I estimated a fair price based on sonics only and I think around £250K for my system based on SQ alone would be reasonable value. Maybe that is conservative. It definitely outperforms systems costing more than that.

So I conclude:

1) What a crazy hobby.
2) There's nowhere to go at reasonable cost.
3) What a conceited, smug post this is. The fact that I really believe it is somewhat worrying:D

User211

That said a 2nd hand pair of Trios at say £17K with no bass horns would rank very well in the general scheme of things at Munich.

surprised they weren't using their Endorphin CD player, rather than the so, so Digit. I regret not getting a TT Reference amp from them. I still have a Classic 1 mk2 very nice, especially when they are used as mono integrated amps. I didn't much care for the Mk3 version, a step back and the Logos..... overall not great.

Odean / NAF.

Not NAF at all. Unfortunately the speakers are around £125K. Some lovely sounds coming from this pairing. A little coloured with some "injected tone" maybe but, for someone who doesn't like classical, this room made me stop and think a bit.

Unsure why this speaker managed to sound so blended with dynamic and horn drivers, and I wonder if you'd catch it out with other programme material.

The video is hopeless I am afraid, with a mass of camera noise on it. It just isn't fair on the manufacturer to post it.

It was seriously dark in there, so what you see is by magic of flash.

Yes I had a Tektron phono stage off Greg as well as a Y10 DHT preamp. The preamp was excellent (although very high gain) and if I'd had the dosh as the time I might well have bought it - a little microphonic as DHT pre's tend to be but it was incredibly dynamic and the tone quality was stunning. Later tried the phono pre, it wasn't bad at all but didn't quite knock my Nick Gorham phono pre off the perch (which is fair enough as Nick's pre was close to twice the price).

Seriously? Exact opposite for me. The only possible use for this is in a bordello, or possibly in a Bond villan's lair. The Thoress would give you instant cred with any visiting PhD in sciences (of which we get a surprising number through the door ...).

It'd need to be a top bordello, 20,800 Euros is a bit much for a preamp even at pretty high quality premises.

Anyway this has got to be a pretty pricey room. I can't really decide whether I liked it or not. Kharma stuff generally doesn't go down well with me.

There are some navigation logistics to be performed when shooting these videos. A lot of walking backwards and moving the camera around to avoid people and gear. Sooner or later I'll trash something expensive:D

Plus there's the "I wish the git with the camera would get out of the way" factor everyone must be thinking, but never seem to verbalise.

Nice open mid range but apparently with lagging bass. Which is also a real shame. In other words, the usual horn integration issues.

Albedo.

Italian loudspeakers, clad in leather.

"Albedo is the fraction of solar energy (shortwave radiation) reflected from the Earth back into space. It is a measure of the reflectivity of the earth's surface. Ice, especially with snow on top of it, has a high albedo: most sunlight hitting the surface bounces back towards space."

Turning in a pretty good Money For Nothing, which you'll need to have had to buy the system. Driven by a huge VTL, obviously.

But then if your system doesn't do a pretty good Money For Nothing, which generally sounds fab on a lot of kit, you have problems.

Video to follow.

It strikes me I am not being too kind to some of the gear. Let's just say it is a lot better in Munich than Whittlebury or Bristol.

Just thought it important to make that point, irrespective of prices, which on average are way higher in Munich, obviously.

Anyway, this was a really interesting contrast at the show. What none of the systems can do is capture the real sense of air coming out of these instruments when you are close to them. It is like you can almost feel it.

It was like they were saying "here you idiots, this is what the real stuff sounds like".

YouTube just won't fess up to having the Albedo video despite it having been uploaded 3 times. Curious. Time may cure this.

To return to the previous theme I think a lot of it is willy-waving - a lot of the bling isn't about music at all it's about a giant statement in the living room and a price tag with bragging rights.

Then that would explain my disengagement. If manufacturers are orientated to those sorts of customers and they have those motivations, It is totally bankrupt and lacking in any integrity, purpose or merit.

Well, I suppose it is the High End show, and the industry seems to think High End equates with expensive ... and high price stuff (luxury goods) are seen by Marketers as 'fashion/lifestyle statements'. Not exactly the philosophy of this forum

Overall, I found the show to be way better than anything I've ever attended in the UK (Harrogate, Chesterfield, Heathrow, Whittlebury, Scalford mostly), and well worth visiting. The bigger systems in the larger rooms gave a sense of scale not normally heard, but on the other hand, they were starting to approach PA proportions ... hardly practical in most homes. Justin is right though ... I was wandering close to the main doors in one of the big halls, when I heard something startlingly real, way better than normal. I followed my ears through the door, and there was the saxophone quartet playing in the foyer

Much as I don't want to upset Wammer pride, it also betters Scalford by a substantial margin, as indicated by Peter above.

It was cheap this year generally I noticed Expedia seemed to be charging a lot less for Munich hols. I wonder why?

I have thought about it: I have 4 TTs and like to dabble with cartridges. So the EMT looks interesting and appears to be sufficiently versatile regarding adjustable gain and loading. I also like the 'laboratory'/utilitarian cosmetics, though I prefer the grey 'hammer finish' version and would really like a black fascia if I could have it. I don't think it has fully balanced outputs (or inputs for that matter); something which I regard as being an important and desirable facility.

But at > £15K, I'm not sure .............

Meh.
An education in what?

I have less than zero interest in most of the stuff that I see in the photos. -- a lot of it positively repels me.
5 £figure electronics. Stupid looking turntable bling-towers. Nauseating retro-chic designs.
Loudspeakers that I couldn't afford to buy let alone house sensibly, most of which I would hate anyway.
Preset music playlists full of jazz crappola that would have me heaving.

None of the UK shows interest me anymore. Bigger / more up-market shows is not the way to go as far as I am concerned.
I've owned and heard enough gear to have sorted my own personal path.
What is the point?

I'd (much) rather stay at home with my own choice of gear and listen to my own choice of music.

Meh.
Just call me an old grouch.

I loved this - epic.

And totally agree with Peter and Justin, on Scalford, education and the overall 'experience' I'm glad I went. For all that a huge chunk of stuff left me cold, it's so huge that there was more than enough to my taste to drool over or even plot and scheme about.

Still my favourite thing of the whole trip (a notch even above the Thoress stuff) was the Fortepiano demonstration!

TIDAL.

There (was) no doubt in my mind that TIDAL make some of the best conventional speakers. At least in 2011 I was seriously impressed with them. In 2014, still good, but not so much. In 2017, with the biggest TIDAL speaker I have experienced so far, an associate and I were not impressed.

Just a blend of components that didn't go well together? TT not up to the job? In there at unfortunate times? I am reluctant to blame the speaker, though this finish doesn't appeal to my tastes visually.

I did think Loricraft when I looked at it. It was in the Harbeth room.

Anyway, I've decided I really like Engstrom amps.

The Marten video I featured earlier uses the new Engstrom Eric monos, based on the new KR T100 tube, good for 70 Watts a channel. It sounded great in both Marten rooms.

If the Eric had a tad more power, I'd try and dem a pair at home. That is, until I found out the retail, which I suspect isn't cheap.

And the Engstrom Lars was fantastic in this system as shot by me 6 years ago. F*&kin' great, this system, I thought, in a huge room with you on a very high chair. You had to stand to listen to this one to make it work. Although this video was shot with a camera with poor mics to say the least.

Pretty average show this year I felt, not much really that much to appeal to the average guy who could really wish to buy currently, plenty of uber high end porn that failed to deliver sonic-ally.

Did anyone venture in to the Westminster labs room at all? Didn't get a chance to drop in, anyone do so?

Certainly not as busy as last year (visitor wise) Saturday was busy in spurts.

Spent a good 30 minutes on the Marten room on Sunday (the one with the Whest phono stage and Belcanto Black set up), not a fan of Black series equipment, but on the tracks they played Sunday afternoon it easily outshone the TT set up with the valves which sounded thin and quite brittle at the top, then they swapped to the digital, this sounded more analogue than the analogue set up. not sure what quite was going on though my suspicions would fall at the door of the Whest phono stage, having heard this before in quite a few systems, there is a sonic signature it seems to have.

Was expecting better things from this set up, Potato Potatoe as our US part time friends would say.

More attention given to room dressings this year though.

Too many meetings mind you thirty in four days

Best post of the thread IMHO. Kind of reminds me of Clockwork Orange era type stuff. Anyone know what the film is?

Full of ugly women everyone. Don't watch it.

Cheers on Google Play £1.99. Cult movie so they say. Beautifully shot at any rate.

It has a certain Italian look, sumptuous and somewhat decadent.

Hm the video is a lot cooler than the film methinks. Quite like the music on the video too.

Coming soon from Playback Designs - the Dream transport.

Nice piece of kit in the flesh. The DAC looks the same. On display only - no idea how it sounds. Doesn't look cheap, though.

Looks a bit gross on the website, but better in real life. I like it a lot.

£17K in 2010 with arm. I seriously like what they say about getting rid of the plinth. They are just vibration magnets really.

If you can pick just the TT up for £5K in very good nick I'll have one. eBay search set.

If one thing is for sure, components demoed at Munich High End have the best cases.

...although there are some 'crazy' takes on HiFi that are very interesting.

I think I am getting over my fling with the above TT. Just an aesthetics crush but it probably is a good performer.

Sorry all I do have a lot more photos but I just don't feel as though I have anything worth saying about them. And a lot of the videos just can't be posted for reasons stated.

Still AoS didn't exactly get cheated. TBH the retro gear pics are in some sense my faves, in part because the same leading high end brand aesthetics are too well known.

So get yerself some Art Deco Fi.

Vile? Or cool? Amp does 40 Watts for 4 KT150s but takes other valve types.

This lady, though, not good, I think you'll agree. Needs a dust, probably costs a fortune. Bit of a slapper I reckon. The lipstick is just too tarty.
