CD Storage

I'd like to archive a whole bunch of my CDs and store them away somewhere, probably under the bed.

Can anyone recommend some decent containers for this purpose? I'd like them to hold up to 200 CDs and have as little wasted space as possible. Has anyone found the perfect receptacle?

I used to store my CDs in a case very similar to this, I wouldn't want to guaruntee they would fit in this exact one but if you pop down your local jessops they will prob have them in store

Thanks Hamish, but I'm not looking for anything as substantial as that. Just something to keep them dust free and all together.

Ikea do cardboard boxes that are well made and durable. I have a few of the 'LP' sized versions for my LP inner-sleeves and plastic covers. You'd need a few, but they're cheap and extendable, and easy to put together.

They used to do a substantial CD 'Chest of Draws' 5x2 drawers high, each drawer holding about 15 discs. It's a shame they don't seem to do them anymore. I bought a bunch and still find them useful.

Get yerself down to your local supermarket. Banana boxes!!
If you lay a piece of card from another box in the bottom to cover the big hole, you can get two layers of CD's in a box & put the lid on (with another piece of card covering the hole in the top). They're really strong boxes & free.

I can also recommend "Really Useful" boxes. My local Staples sells them - prob more than direct order, but you get to pick up what you want and see the whole range. The ones linked above are ideal for under bed use (I do this) and are just the right height for DVDs/Videos, but you will not lose too much space if you want to store CDs with spines "up" for easy access.

Oh, just remember to account for CDs in "special" packaging. Sigh.

My CDs are stored in plastic boxes in the loft and I've been wondering recently why I don't just sell them.

They are all ripped to FLAC (I went digital a while ago) so I don't expect to have to rip them again. I seldom (if ever) want to look through the little booklets and I struggle to appreciate CD sized cover artwork.

If I sell them now some may still have value, whereas if I hold on to them I anticipate they will become valueless in much the same way as the couple of Nikon film cameras I have did (and I doubt I shall live long enough for them to acquire antique value).

What do you reckon?

Well, I went for these (http://www.plasticboxshop.co.uk/pack-of-4-cd-storage-box--lid-stores-up-to-52-cds-101-p.asp) in the end. I like the smaller boxes cos it means they're not as heavy, they're easier to categorise, and I only have to rip 52 before I can stash the box away. Plus, I can see all the titles through the box.

I got 8 for the price of 7 (from another site actually), £31.74 in total.

If you sell them, you no longer own a license for the music. Let's ignore the technical legal problem at the moment in the UK where you are not actually allowed to even rip your own copies of CDs for listening to on digital playback devices - that should be sorted out soon apparently and no one in the music industry cares (until they figure out how to monetise it).

If you sell the CDs but keep the FLACs then you are basically pirating music. Legally and (in my personal view) morally.
