Analogue resurgence in photography

It’s not just vinyl that is making an analogue comeback, it seems that film photography is also enjoying a resurgence of interest.

Film photography suffered a near total fatality with the introduction, firstly, of affordable digital cameras and then with the introduction of smart phones. This has meant that an industry, which once processed nearly a billion rolls of film a year, now has a turnover of only 2% of what it once was.

However the good news is that Kodak is to start remanufacture of Ektachrome slide film, in both 35mm and 120 formats.

I’m sure this is not news to fellow photography enthusiasts here, but it was new to me.

Now I hope Kodak will consider remanufacture of Kodachrome, but I’m not holding my breath!

Very interesting Barry. I recently moved to a full frame DSLR and can now do things I once could only do with full frame film. Because of this move I have just this week sold off my last SLR camera and motordrive.

Sold all my Hasselblad gear and Darkroom equipment quite a few years ago when quality digital became available and never looked back, OK if I needed to make 40x60 inch enlargements I would look to MF again but nowadays A3 is the biggest print I need and the low cost of Digital beats the cost of Analog production every time, especially in colour output, I do miss the quality B&W that the wet process produced which ink jets just don't reach yet but don't miss all the hours work in the Darkroom just to produce one masterpiece.

What really pisses me off with digital output is that I almost entirely work in black and white and digital is pink, green or blue. When I say black and white, I bloody well mean black and white. For Christ's sake digital, catch up with reality...!!

Even using a digital print agency such as Redcliffe Imaging the clouds are never quite black and white. This is just not good enough.

I sold off my medium format gear years ago as I found it way too limiting compared to 35mm and its extensive choice of lenses. Now I use full frame digital I have the same choice of lenses with some extreme compositions but with the clarity of digital. I am very happy with things as they are at the moment. Apart from monochrome digital prints.
