Looking for some specific feedback from anyone using the McIntosh MP100 with a Technics. I'm a fan of the overall sound of a McIntosh system but elected to modify my Technics instead of going with the standard McIntosh MT5 (I'm a bit nostalgic and a 1200 was my first and favorite turntable), so I really want to go with a McIntosh preamp/amp to try and capture that magical "McIntosh Sound".
I'm have a 1210 m5g with most of the usual initial upgrades (with some more planned), using the Ortofon Quintet Blue MC. My amp is currently being replaced/upgraded and the Sonus Faber Concerto Grand Piano's need to be replaced by a smaller footprint speaker for the time being. I realize the current speaker/amp solution is probably temporary (1-2 years) so my current focus is on getting a pre-amp thats going to stay with me. Have loved listening on friends C100 and C200 but they're out of my price range for now, and not sure this system is going to get to the point where I want to invest that much in the preamp when I'm sure the investment would be better put into the amp/speaker upgrades. In the sub $3k (USD) range, the MP100 looks like a perfect option, but haven't really heard from any long term users what their feedback is (except for McIntosh users comparing it to their existing McIntosh equipment). Between several forums and "experts" the reviews are mixed, but a lot of it seems to be around the digital functionality which isn't important to me.
So, if you've got a 12xx and have tried the MP100 preamp (or just heard this combo), please let me know your thoughts on it, if you're MC/MM, and what preamp you're comparing it to.
I'm really not trying to start a debate about preamps, McIntosh, or get suggestions on other brands (which I know there are many), I'm only interested in a McIntosh phono stage...but if you've got another McIntosh suggestion that will work with a low output MC (capable of .3mv as I might move to the Black S in time) and around the $3k price range, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on that as well.
