Sony PS-X65 Turntable repair

Morning all,

Last night my sony PS65 threw a wobbly, stopped in its tracks and it now only powers on, with none of the other controls/buttons work at all.
I had a scan inside and everything is connected.

This turntable has been gradually going a bit weird over the last couple of years; tone arm swinging wildly on automatic function, record size indicator bulb out, strong smell of capacitor leakage.

I would really like to keep it going and take it to someone to get it repaired and serviced, but i understand that the electrical part of it is a mare to work on.

Does anyone have a recommeneded tech who could work on this?

Lovely turntable, well worth resurrecting.

he recommended a guy to me,unfortunately hes based in farnborough so it might be too far for the op
ive just sold my ps-60 but i still have the electrics etc.if you get it diagnosed i may be able to supply parts if needed. :)

i dont mind travelling a bit to have it repaired by the right person - i can't say the same for my family following me on hifi obsessed missions though!
I'll PM beobloke for the Farnborough contact if i cant get anyone closer.

It's a capable deck worthy of restoring. I had mine serviced by a guy on the other end of the country. It is also worth rewiring the tonearm, it really made a difference on my deck.

Thanks for the details Jamie. Will be dropping the turntable off in a couple of weeks and i'll update when I get it back.

Blackholesun: I remember when you posted some beautiful photos of your deck and mentioned about a rewire. Seems a worthwhile upgrade - did you specify the wiring?

I ended up taking the turntable to the chap based in Farnborough because i couldn't face scrapping it. The couple of hours drive was well worth it because i doubt there's many other people who could've fixed it......period, anywhere.
Lovely guy and true 1st class technician.

Blackholesun: I remember when you posted some beautiful photos of your deck and mentioned about a rewire. Seems a worthwhile upgrade - did you specify the wiring?

I simply asked the guy who serviced the deck to rewire the tonearm, without mentioning any specific wiring. He told me that he had used PROLINK OFC double shielded interconnect with Hermann Titan Gold plugs. I guess it's nothing fancy, but it works great. No idea what kind of wiring is inside the tonearm itself. I compared my pre-service PS-X65 with an 80s Planar 3 and the Planar was clearly better. When I had my PS-X65 completely serviced and rewired, I compared it with my Rega RP6, the same cartridge on both decks. I sold my RP6 two days ago... :)

The Sony PS-X range are exceptional. I loved owning one and i'm looking to refurb one and put in storage for my son, eventually. I reckon that's a pretty good gift one day! Actually i'll need two lol
