Hi folks
Whilst out house hunting today I came across these up sale. Any of you folks know anything about them at all? Didn't get to hear them. Ran out of time. The seller will audition them when I get back on Wednesday if I'm interested. I know zilch about them, so would I be wasting my hard earned cash on a potential money pit or are these something really worth picking up. Overall cosmetically they are pretty solid. Words of wisdom as always gratefully accepted. I won't mentioned how much the ticket says on them just yet, it'll be interesting to read what you guys reckon!!
Cheers
Loz

Good cabs. Ive got a set made into full range single drivers not actually heard a set going for years. Dovedale 3
12" main. 5" mid and tweeter. Mid is fitted in a cardboard tube
grab ’em and listen.
I’ve got some very similar Kit Speakers and they sound great if your amp has enough current to control them.
(I’m using them with a Toshiba 7100 receiver)
;-)
I‘d pay EUR 50,– anytime, anything above that would be depending on condition, but defo not more than EUR 100,–
replacements drivers will be virtually impossible to find, so I’d not sink that much money into some ancient tech …
:-))

The Dovedale's are good fun. It's a big beefy sound with reasonably tight bass, quite detailed too, if not the last word in refinement. I'd not pay more than £80 for a pair though.

"if not the last word in refinement"

Well for your info folks, the shop owner wants.....ahem....£170 for them! I guess he has overheads to think about. Think we can knock him down?

I have made a very very cheeky offer ;)
Let's see....
Print this off and take it into him:
'Dear Mr Shopkeep. I understand that you probably don't know much about hi-fi or the price of hi-fi but asking £170 for these speakers is like asking ten pounds for an out of date Mars bar you found on the floor under the counter. It may still be okay to eat but it is actually worth less than an in date Mars bar, not ten times more.
We are all here of the opinion that the correct price is somewhere between a pony and a ton. Not a monkey, and certainly not the giraffe that you are having.
Thanks for your attention'

Worth about £50 tops I'd say. Those tweeters are crap (if working. Also unreliable) and would be the first thing I'd replace. The crossover will need re-capping and probably the level controls replacing. I once had a set of "unit 5" kit speakers which used the same drive units in a bigger cabinet but had no level controls. Not bad over all.

Yep - my current offer is £5 more...thats:) fair
Showing my ignorance here but why does a pair of Wharfedale Dovedales show a makers plate 'The Radio People Ltd - 25 Chatham Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong'? Were these kits made up in overseas markets or what? Love to know...

This has come up before. I think Spendorman knows all about that.

 Don't tempt me Martin!
that big heavy cone will probably be rubbing due to a sagging spider....as with many speakers of this vintage.
easily fixed by rotating the driver 180 degrees.

Not necessarily.
It's not usually a problem that afflicts this model in any case.

Only the tweeter is dodgy reliability wise on these... it's a bit "fierce" when working as well. A modern tweeter would be a good upgrade.

Was in St Leonards on Sea this morning. Made an enquiry on behalf of Dan (Dantheman91). Would the seller budge from his asking price of £170? Not a chance. So no sale! Who knows, you might have dodged a bullet there Dan?

I don't know about Wharfedales, but if you want cheap speakers you can't beat the pair of Goodmans Ministers I bought for £5.00.
Yes, £5.00.
I fitted two new soft dome tweeters costing £15.00 and a speaker designer friend modded the crossovers.
The working Goodmans tweeter was sold for £70 (!) to someone in Taiwan, who wanted to repair his big Goodmans speakers.
I later sold the Ministers for £45.00 and the buyer was delighted with them.

Hi I have a pair of Dovedales in the recommended larger cab (66 litre I think). I listened to them last night for the first time in a while (as they are in the garden listening room it tends to get neglected in the winter).
They have a piggy backed supertweeter on them. Powered by a Quantum 207D with a NAD pre.
Nina Simone sounded very lively.

Just read the post above. The DDs are sitting next to a pair of early Minsters and a pair of DM3 with the ellipitical drivers. They are all good fun. Pair of Magisters and Dimension 8 down there as well. Need to get the xover upgrade on them.
