Maybe if we go unbeaten all season in the league, I have a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue which I was given when I retired, looking for a good excuse to open it.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkYeah the 12 is good. This is a fair bit better as you'd expect. It's usually well under £70 and for a 18, it's good value. It is bourbon casked tho. No sherry.

I was originally thinking along the lines of:

Ardbeg Uigeadail
Caol Ila 18
Highland Park 18
AnCnoc Peatheart
Benriach the smoky twelve
Tomintoul 15

I will add Talisker to the list.

Just a heads up, chaps and chapettes, for anyone who may be interested in some bargain (quality) vino, available now in Lidl... I bagged these today:

https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/the-spring-wine-tour/morellino-di-scansano/p40990

Think of it as a 'poor man's' Brunello di Montalcino: rich, full-bodied and gorgeously fruity - a veritable 'super Tuscan', at a veritable non-super Tuscan price!

https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/the-spring-wine-tour/langhe-doc-nebbiolo/p40984

Potentially as good as some Barolos, from the same region. Usually DOC wines of this quality from Piedmont cost double that amount or more!

https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/product-recommendation/giulio-pasotti-lugana/p40969

As described, a wonderful white wine, especially if you value subtlety and finesse, as much as flavour, over often exaggerated overly-oaked new world whites (count me in), and which pairs beautifully with seafood.

https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/the-spring-wine-tour/negroamaro-bianco-puglia/p40972

Unusual to see this in the UK, and 'does what it says on the tin', at a great price. A more interesting choice, with greater depth and complexity, than your average, rather boring Pinot Grigio.

Ditto this (even more so):

https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/the-spring-wine-tour/vermentino-bianco-toscana/p40970

A beautifully refreshing slurp that's rewarding enough to be enjoyed on its own on a hot summer's day!

And if you fancy going a little 'off piste', this is a stunner:

https://www.lidl.co.uk/en/p/the-spring-wine-tour/tokaji-furmint-vicarius/p40979

Hungarian wines are often vastly underrated, and the Tokaji grape (done well, as in this instance) makes some of the best wines in the world, and so fully deserves its 'outstanding' status!

So, folks.... Run along to your nearest Lidl and grab these stonkers while stocks last!!

Robin, are you listening?;)

Marco.

Tobermory 12yr old. Bourbon barrels then finished in virgin oak..

Some caramel and sea salt and a little vanilla further in...Quite creamy with pears and a touch of spice initially . Then the peppery spice kicks in, but keeps the fruitiness in tandem and moves to finish of a slighty sour but zingy finale. finish is medium long, and the fruit is always there to help balance the pepper.
rather good this actually; im impressed as its first Tobermory ive had for a good while and wasnt overly taken with their 10yr old.

no water needed imo and the more you drink the better it tastes... i dare say that makes it moreish:eyebrows:

A nice day and I'm not getting any younger/whisky isn't getting any older so opened this octaves 2 from Glenglassaugh.

Aged in 50 litre octave casks that held bourbon, PX and Amontillado Sherries.

Lots of dried fruit here.. Lashings of it but balanced with the vanilla and a little caramel, plus chilli peppers. Some jam in there too... This is superb stuff.
Top quality mouthfeel and nice, sustained finish. Get some. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210403/535bfbd7a60256e1b07487788dedfe5d.jpg

Another new opening; Glenglassaugh Evolution @50% and fairly young.. first came out in about 2014 i think and won a few awards.

White wine, butterscotch and vanilla on nose leads to a fruity centre but always with that vanilla and caramelly touches beside it.. apples too appear. Some pepper but nicely controlled for 50% and youth. No water needed either imo. Some nice oak and banana in the finish.
This was aged in ex Tennessee barrels(Geo Dickel i believe although not 100% sure). It is very decent for 3/4 yrs old and a pleasure to drink. Excellent distillery this. i have a few of theirs.. no colour or chill filtering either...

Over the pond and Few Bourbon from Evanton, which was under prohibition for a 100 yrs.

Lots of smooth spice in this with toffees and a little vanilla. Not especially complex but warming and no need to add any O2 to its 46.5% abv.
A nicely balanced bourbon.

Compas Box Spice Tree. Blended Malt at 46%, non chill filtered and natural colour, also aged in special casks of american oak and heavily toasted french oak heads.

This gives this its character and a lovely one it is. Various highland malts in this, with Clynelish being the principal. Nice vanilla on nose and mouth with an array of spices and a long finish. Smooth too, plus maybe some herbs in there too..

for money this is up there with the best blends for my tastes..

Nomad Outland Whisky....

This is made with a selection of over 30 malt and grain whiskies aged between 5 and 8 years old, which are blended together and matured in Sherry butts in Scotland for three years. Following that, the whisky is shipped off to Jerez, where it is finished in Pedro Ximénez casks for a year before it is bottled..

This is a nice smooth warming christmas cake of a dram where the cook got distracted and kept pouring.. You could drink this all night.... i might just do that. A bit of Greek brandy in the flavour profile, PX sweetness and so much sherry its hard to compare.. Great value for money.

Another new opening..
Aultmore 12 Yr old.

Rare to get bottles from this distillery up in Keith. One of Dewars blend whiskies this, and quite interesting.

Nose is slightly sweet and fruity like a desert wine initially, as is taste. Then it dries quickly and honey and vanilla appear. Oak takes over a bit with spices and a long fine finish.
After a few sips and some air, herby banana and a silky mouthfeel is also there.
Rather nice, delicate drink. Quite like it.

Lol... Oh I know all about it, mate [the southern bias/prioritisation of supermarket stock], from when I lived in Glasgow.

Used to watch foodie programmes, where certain wines were recommended, apparently which were available in 'selected stores' (of whatever featured supermarket/wine merchant it was), then going along to my local store to find it, of course only to find that it wasn't one of the said 'selected' (and indeed rarely ever was)...

Strangely, I almost never encounter that problem now!:hmm:;)

Chivas Regal 15 Yr old Blended..

Not much of a nose yet, nice mouthfeel, flavours of caramel at bottom, pears at top, vanilla in middle and on aftertaste.
Nice and smooth. I expect a few more things will appear.
Maybe red apples in there too.

Opened this tonight. Arran Amarone cask finish..

an oily mouth and a mix of fruit, and spice. A drop of O2 is benificial here. sweet at first with cherries and maybe redcurrents... dries nicely and has a reasonable finish.
Ive held on to not opening this(old bottle) for some time, but now is the time and it is a lovely whisky. might be a bit of strawberry on the palate too,

good value and, yes, i would buy again.

Another wood finish opened today.
Glenglassaugh Port finish. 46% and very nice indeed. I do like glenglassaugh.
Toffee and spices on nose and a bit of wild berries and orange initially on palate, followed by some oak, raspberry and rare spices.
Good longish finish with blackcurrant and spices again to see it out.
Lovely slight pink colour too.
Mouthfeel is pleasent too and it gets a bit fruitier as it airs off.

Another Port finished one opened today.. Had this before and enjoyed it.. Tyrconnell 10yr old port finish.

Excellent sweet, mangos and oranges on palate. finish is medium with more sweet orange peel .. nose has a little glaziers putty too.. nice for a 10 yr old tho and needs no water. Longer you leave it with air the better it gets. imo.

Just arrived today so opened.

Glen Moray Sherry Cask.
It's young but tasty enough.
Fruit, buttery and caramel mostly then slightly too much oak and spice but not bad for price..
At least you know its whisky.
Give it 3.5/5, which is a credible score.

I got a bottle of the BBR Speyside.

I absolutely loved the sherried edition so thought this worth a punt.

Needs 10-15 minutes in the glass to soften and lose its sourness. You then get some nice tropical fruits but still tastes quite austere.

Wouldn't buy another one but I'll be finishing the bottle!

excellent stuff. Benriach, the twelve..46%

beautifully married this.. black or blueberry, and a little strawberry and banana too.. pepper that goes right to finish. some buttery vanilla from the bourbon, but the two wine casks hold the strongest hand. Slightly sweet but not enough to make it sickly.
Im quite enamoured with this. Decent mouthfeel too. considering price and age.. 5/5

Glencadam 10yr old.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210605/0c4159f00235c76527090bed7f3e3bad.jpg

Lemon merrangue pie freshness on nose followed by a nice fresh fruits and vanilla mouth. this turns more toward lemonade then grapefruit with a reasonable level of pepper spice lingering on the mildish but quite long finish. A very tasty dram overall...
Overall, for this money it has to rate quite highly. I would buy again.

Cambeltown's Glen Scotia Double Cask; 46%.

Nose of caramel, sea and smoke. tastes quite peppery and a rich fruity basis.. a bit of smoke on tongue too. Its a bit young and firey and a small amount of O2 helps this along nicely. Lots of cinammon and nutmeg in finish even with the water.
Nice dram tho and of its home.. Cambeltown.

I have added a few bottles ,scotch is becoming harder to get here so I grabbed the last bottle of Glenfarclas 25 on the shelf .
No projections on when we will see more come in.
Good Bourbon is going up here too.
Stocked up on stuff I like.
Tonight I am having a Wild Turkey 101 over ice.
This is a very reasonably priced high rye Bourbon, I believe it is still 10 years old but I'm sure the quality of the barrels has been sacrificed to retain low pricing.
It was a gift, I like Bourbon over ice in the summer.
I have added a few nice bottles to the cabinet.
I have become so busy 4:30 am to 10:00 pm is killing me.
After work pick up Conner and go to one or more to the following every day + church on Sunday.
Conner's Baseball,Boxing or Basketball, H.O.A. meeting or business,City Counsel meetings.
I have been doing a lot of public service stuff.
Sorry to be away so long. Home today with the shingles!
BTW: looking at the 2021-2022 Triumph Speedmaster ,anyone ride one yet?
That's pretty much whats been up with me, I'm hoping everyones been good.

Well one way to improve your wine, particularly red, is to make your own. Start with a fantastic Italian variety Aglianico and voila. Which is probably why I sit in front of the Westies and the bottle improves as it disappears.

Port Dundas 13yr old. Cask 12465. Bottled by Douglas Laing for its Old Particular series.

This is a single grain whisky from a now closed distillery from 2009.
No longer available widely this is a superb whisky, matured in bourbon barrels and starring in creamy Toffee, some apricots and a touch of chocolate.

As promised, mate, based on your fav grape varieties...

I'll comment more later on in my view the best ones to go for, (and which ones have corks lol, there are two), however bear in mind that the same grape varieties (i.e Sauvignon Blanc or Merlot) from different countries, with warmer or cooler climates, will taste *very different*!:)

No problem, mate. The Chianti Classico Riserva (grey label at £7.75) and Trivento Malbec, at £8, I suspect will be the standout reds, along with the Jam Shed Shiraz, so would thoroughly recommend those.

In terms of white, I suspect the standouts will be the Identity Sauvignon Blanc (at £8), Squealing Pig and Lacheteau Sauv Blancs, although the Chardonnay/Pinot Grigio should also be nice (in a different way), and a bit more full-bodied than usual, because of the injection of Chardonnay.

Anyway, let me know how you get on:cool:

Yes its a very good butcher, which has grown in the last few years, Ive not tried any of their wines yet, I normally drink red and happy to try anything, normally would average £10 per bottle but have a birthday coming up so I have an excuse to splash out. The wife only really drinks Pinot Grigio or. Sav. Blanc.

Soz for the delay, mate. Just been busy...

Okies, you should DEFO give this a go, as the grape variety is superb (normally used to partly make up French claret), but with the warmer Italian climate, it should really be a stonker (perhaps for your birthday celebration):

https://www.mccaskiebutcher.co.uk/product/cabernet-franc-la-tunella/

This is also superb value and liable to be lovely (if you enjoy claret): https://www.mccaskiebutcher.co.uk/product/chateau-mayne-graves/

French 'regionals' (good ones like this) always offer value for money, so this should be nice (smooth and fruity): https://www.mccaskiebutcher.co.uk/product/lostal-del-souquet-carignan-vieilles-vignes-igp-coteaux-de-peyriac/

This should also be gorgeous and a style not often seen in UK wine outlets: https://www.mccaskiebutcher.co.uk/product/valpolicella-superiore-roccola-di-mizzole-cecilia-beretta/

This also looks to be excellent value, and should be a good 'glugger': https://www.mccaskiebutcher.co.uk/product/marques-de-musa-tempranillo-granacha-2017/

Portuguese reds are also seriously underrated ans this looks like a good one: https://www.mccaskiebutcher.co.uk/product/quinta-de-chocapalha-tinto/

However, if you're willing to splash out, this should blow your mind, especially if you haven't enjoyed Pomerol before: https://www.mccaskiebutcher.co.uk/product/lhospitalet-de-gazin-pomerol/

Should be an absolute STUNNER, especially with a nice steak!

However, the Cabernet Franc I recommended first should get you 80% of the way there, for considerably less dosh. I guess it just depends how much you want that extra 20% of magic only a top-notch claret can deliver;)

As for whites, for your good lady:

This should be good: https://www.mccaskiebutcher.co.uk/product/lofthouse-sauvignon-blanc/

Don't be put off by the price, as there's a WORLD of difference between Sauv Blancs at this level and those half the price, in terms of a more fruit-forward nature, buttery richness and less stringent acidity.

I'm sure that the Pinot Grigio would also be very nice, as the owner of the shop, clearly knows his wines and likes to source them (rather selectively) from small, good quality vineyards: https://www.mccaskiebutcher.co.uk/product/pinot-grigio-grigo-luna/

And if you fancy a slightly 'left field' choice, to rival a good Chablis (touching on Puligny Montrachet territory), this should be a stonker: https://www.mccaskiebutcher.co.uk/product/montagny-bonneveaux-1er-cru-olivier-leflaive/

Hope that helps:cool:

When you've seen this post, I'll move it to the wine thread where it belongs.

Marco.

Marco.

Thanks Marco, that’s great and much appreciated, looking forward to enjoying a few of them.

Interesting, mate. I wasn't sure how it would go, as I don't think I've tried that combo before, so was a bit of a step into the unknown. Your comments are certainly something I'll bear in mind:)

Glad you enjoyed the suggested budget wines but be aware that with a £5 bottle of wine, by the time you remove the tax and duty you end up with 31p worth of wine. With a £7.50 bottle, you end up with £1.43 worth of wine.

Aye, like a tampon is as a teabag!:eyebrows:

Yeah that PG looks decent. A good alternative to Pinot Grigio is Vermentino, which is more golden in colour, richer and fruitier, but not drier. Still nice and crisp though, and ideal chilled for summer glugging!

If you've got an Aldi near you, this is very good for the money: https://www.aldi.co.uk/pierre-jaurant-french-vermentino/p/709970468242600

Ignore the fact that it's French!:D Seriously though, both countries can handle each other's grape varieties with considerable aplomb. Pinot Grigio is the same as Pinot Gris.

There are loads of interesting Italian white grape varieties, which have lots to offer over the 'usual suspects'. Trebbiano and Vernaccia are two others.

What's the alcohol content - something like 13.5% (typical Shiraz)? It *could* still be ok, given the higher alcohol content, as opposed to the 11-12.5% of other table wines. but it's needs drinking now or using in cooking!:)

Butter shortbread, malt and vanilla in this. Not dry and finish is fairly mild but very nice too. Some nuts in there too.

Glen Grant 18 yr old.

Stunning dram this, full of sweet vanilla, nuts and malty goodness.
It's so well balanced this. Every whisky drinker should try it at least once.
I haven't tasted this since it was launched years ago and I had one in a whisky bar. Think it was on royal Mile.
Anyway this is bloody beautiful.

In the main I’m ok, although all the family were suffering from a virus for the last few weeks, which flooded us, but we are now recovering. My wife was diagnosed with Temporal arteritis, 12 months ago, which was quite worrying at the time , she has now been off work for a year and is on a cocktail of drugs including some vey heath duty steroids, so her immune system is shot to pieces. Things are getting better but very slowly.

Arteritis refers to inflammation of your arteries that damages your blood vessel walls and reduces blood flow to your organs. There are several types of arteritis. The symptoms and complications that occur depend on which arteries are affected and the degree of damage

IN my wife’s case it was the swelling of the arteries in the Brain, so here sight was in danger and a few other things.Luckily she did not need surgery just lots of drugs. There is marker they use to measure it form the blood tests, normal is 5-10 , the wife was 125, so a bit scary but thinks are improving but they have to ween you off the steroids, so still a few months to go. Still lots of side effects for her unfortunately.

Looks like it could be time to stock up on Islay malts (either for your own consumption or as an investment).

Article in today's Times, that states "NatureScot" - Scotland's environment protection agency (Cop26 environment conference may influence this?) has requested "urgent" discussions with Diageo about the use of peat.

I was surprised to find that some distilleries already use artificial peat flavourings (charred wood), so get the real stuff while you can :)

A lovely Burgundy (Pinot Noir): https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/the-french-wine-tour/bourgogne-pinot-noir/p44203

A stonking, top-notch Côtes du Rhône Vinsobres (the latter indicates higher than usual quality): https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/the-french-wine-tour/cotes-du-rhone-vinsobres/p44209

Very nice quality white Côtes du Rhône: https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/the-french-wine-tour/cotes-du-rhone-cotin-jaillet/p44218

A beautiful full-bodied, fruity white from the Savoie region of France: https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/the-french-wine-tour/savoie-blanc/p44214

Just opened this for lunch, and it's everything that it's claimed to be!

Don't expect it to rival Haut-Médocs at £30 a bottle (or more), which have much more finesse and depth, but it has a goodly dose of the jammy-fruit flavours of a quality claret, with some of the associated 'barrel-wood' infused overtones - and really just a dammed good and highly enjoyable slurp, for a silly-cheap price of £6.99...!

You could spend £15/16 on a bottle of claret and not get one as good as this - seriously - so snap it up while you can:cheers:

Wow - there's hope yet! Result!:carrot::D When you crack it open, let me know what you think.

Clarets (no matter the vintage) always benefit from some decanting, simply to aerate the wine, so my advice would be to do that (uncork it and decant) just before serving, instead of uncorking the wine an hour or so before consuming it, to let it 'breathe', as that'll be more effective and help retain all the fruit flavours.

Do you have a wine decanter or something you can transfer the wine into? It need only be another clean empty wine bottle, or something similar. It'll make all the difference to your enjoyment of the wine:)

Nice one. The only other thing I'd say is try and finish it between you in one go, as once opened, it's not a wine for keeping for any amount of time. If you do leave some, make sure it's polished off the following day at the latest.

Enjoy!:)

So, whisky or whiskey, I’ve been trying a few over the past couple of years after not being able to touch the stuff for more than twenty years... (long story short, got the most drunk I have ever been at my first stag night and pretty sure I nearly died...!)

Anyway, I’ve decided I’m a Speyside man, not keen on peaty whiskies or anything with a medicinal hint, and my favourite slurp is the bog standard Tamnavulin - I’ve tried their sherry and red wine casket editions but still prefer the normal double cask version.

I’d like to try something a bit more upmarket, but don’t want to spend a shed load of dosh and it not be in the same style. Any recommendations?

Yeah, of course Grant the first person this was aimed at! [emoji846]

Still very much a Rioja man, and for every day drinking it’s whatever is on offer from the supermarkets from the usual suspects (Campo Viejo, Faustino, Torres etc.) but my special occasion “go to” I get from the Adnams shops - a Suffolk Brewer (Ghost Ship) But also have a few shops around the county:https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210904/fcc58680411d7b5f58298432241e9a83.jpg

If you can find them, give either of these a go, particularly the Gran Oristan (£13.99) - lovely woody vanilla oak, with bags of unctuously jammy fruit flavours!

try some bourbon casked stuff if you dont want sherry.

https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/benriach/benriach-the-twelve-whisky/?srh=1

the benriach is from a mix of sherry casks, bourbon casks and Port casks!

all 3 are super. no smoke etc.. 3 of my staples if im not after heavy sherry.

if you want a sherry treat then look no further than this. not cheap but boy its full of the stuff..yum.

Marco.

Fliss is back at work (three days a week), so I am trying to make some pleasant meals.

Popped in to Lidl today and along with some of their Scotch beef burgers bought a bottle of the Puech Morny - my word, it stands up well with the BBQ'd burger, will have to buy a few more bottles :)

(I also made a Feta, toasted walnut, Fig and mixed leaf salad - whole grain mustard/olive oil and basalmic dressing to go on it. Unfortunately no photographs, so won't go in the dinner thread).

Just threw a couple of logs on the Kadai, so I will be back outside later watching the flames and nursing the rest of the bottle - thanks for highlighting it Marco, nice one Lidl :glug:

Sorry, Guy, missed this... Nice one! Glad the Gigondas hit the spot. It's a lovely wine for the money, and how you paired it sounds good:)

Robin, did you manage to find some?

We're just back again from Lidl, and I picked up a rather nice Pouilly-Fumé for £11.99: https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/the-french-wine-tour/tresors-de-loire-pouilly-fume/p44223

I bought this dry German 2018 Riesling by Alexander Gysler to celebrate my late father's birthday yesterday and was most impressed.

Crisp acidity with subtle but delicious peach and apricot notes, hints of tropical fruit and gooseberry backed by a slightly chalky minerality. Available at Oddbins for £20.

A few weeks ago I had a stunning Grauerburgunder (Pinot Gris) from the same producer - such depth of rich flavours for £13.75 and incredible value at that.

Good choice, mate. VR should be rather dark in colour and full of fresh berry fruits! If you like that, also look out for Primitivo or Passimento/Appassimento (especially from the Puglia region of Italy), which have a similar rounded style, but with a bit more 'weight':)

Primitivo, Negroamaro and Nero D'Avola would all be good red grape varieties for you.

Just been dragged out shopping with the Mrs, which is something I hate…
However, this time she took me to a local retailer where I picked up a Tullibardine 15, and a bottle of Santa Ana gin, which originates from the Dom Papa distillery.

Looking forward to sampling these over the festive period.

Been tippling on this recently - a vatted malt by Douglas Laing, unspecified Campbeltown but likely Glen Scotia and a bit of Kilkerran..who knows..anyway, quite nice, not peaty but ballsy.

Just back from Lidl, and a heads up for (I guess mainly Robin)... They've got a superb Gigondas in just now, for a silly-cheap £14.99: https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/the-french-wine-tour/gigondas-puech-morny/p44208

Think of it as a 'poor man's' Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but it won't be very 'poor'!:trust:

Utter bargain for a wine that could easily cost double that in a 'fancy' wine shop. I'd pop along ASAP, and grab some if you can!:)

And for your good lady, a rather nice Muscadet Sevre et Maine: https://www.lidl.co.uk/p/the-french-wine-tour/muscadet-sevre-et-maine/p44215

Lovely wine that, chilled, either as an aperitif or with some seafood pasta or risotto!

Marco.

Just in case you pop in Marco, the Gigondas was really nice mate another great recommendation.

Speyside 8yr old aptly named sherry bomb.
Actually although sherry forward it wasnot really that much of a bomb first day I tried it but since it's had air in bottle it's much more sherryful.

Some drams like some airhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20211229/ce54cd6f87d7ca0a2c6c597f2860ed24.jpg

Got distracted in Tesco earlier by a bottle of this to try on offer - not really a Whiskey, but a couple of people have recommended it so we shall see...
